Winchester College, founded by William of Wykeham in 1382, is one of the world’s most famous and distinguished schools. The College is defined by its motto, Manners Maketh Man. This motto is hundreds of years old but has a surprisingly modern spirit. Its sentiment is that we should be measured not by birth but by our personal qualities, a surprisingly meritocratic sentiment for a school that was founded in 1382. Its language may sound old-fashioned to a modern ear, but it was radically progressive in its time because it was written not in Latin but a dynamic, up-and-coming language: English. Strength of character means having confidence in one’s individuality. At Winchester College, diversity is welcomed, manners are celebrated and kindness is in abundance. There is a sense of community that transfers to care within the community at large. But the boys are free to determine their path, guided rather than governed. The lifeblood of Winchester is a conversation, not just between boys and their teachers but among boys themselves. During house lunch, on the way to the sports pitch, before lights-out, conversation permeates every aspect of Winchester life. Nowhere is this illustrated more powerfully than in our Div lessons which range from the Ancient to the Modern World, investigating historical, cultural, artistic, scientific, and philosophical themes. Div encourages boys to explore topics in the round and to see connections without the constraints of working to an examined schedule. Winchester is a beautiful and historic place. Set on the edge of the South Downs National Park, crisscrossed by clear chalk streams, it offers a rural setting within a fascinatingly historic yet vibrant city. Our Open Days and Campus Tours are an excellent opportunity to see our beautiful campus, take a tour of our stunning accommodation, and meet staff and students from the Course you are looking to study. Open days and applicant opens days are open to all, so we look forward to welcoming you to our campus soon. When you booked your place, you will have been asked to select a Welcome Talk time: either 10 am, 10.45 am, or 11.30 am. This marks the start of your day. We suggest arriving at least 15 minutes before the start time to give yourself time to park and check-in. If you arrive a little earlier or a little later, don't worry - we will direct you to the next available Welcome Talk time. The Open Day finishes once you have received all the information you need. However, all of our primary services finish at 4 pm (please see the program). We often find that visitors spend at least 4 hours with us in order to fit everything in. If you do finish early, then we recommend that you visit our beautiful historic city center. We recommend bringing along your QR code either on your phone/mobile device or as a printout. This will help to speed up the Check-in process. If you did not receive a QR code or you forget to bring it with you, then do not worry; we can check you in just as quickly without one. Firstly, please check your junk mailbox - your email filters may be blocking us. If you still haven't received it, please give us a call or send us an email to check that we have received your booking. We can then send you all the information you need. Our Open Days are hectic, and parking on campus is limited, but we will try our best to provide you with a free parking space. Parking is allocated on a first-booked-first-served basis. When you booked your place online, you will have selected either 'Standard Parking,' 'Disabled Parking,' or 'Parking not required.' When you arrive, you will be directed to the Check-In desks by one of our friendly Student Ambassadors. You will then be able to register your attendance, collect your Open Day pack and attend a Welcome Talk. All of our courses are represented by an academic at all of our Open Days. However, they may not be available throughout the day. We recommend that you check what time your Course Talks are running and attend one of these. Please refer to the program, which is available on our website around 2-3 weeks before the event. If you arrive a little late and miss your Course Talk, please visit our Course Fair, where you can find out more from a course representative. Campus Tours are a great way to explore our beautiful campus and student accommodation. The tours are guided by current students who will give you a flavor of student life here. Tours are held weekly, usually every week, with additional tours provided during school half-term holidays. If you are coming to an Open Day or Campus Tour and have a disability, you may wish to meet with one of our Disability Advisers to discuss the support we can offer. Please be aware the campus has several gradients and steps. However, access is available to most parts of the campus.
