- Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn is a friendly and welcoming school to all pupils. We offer a very caring and supportive environment that provides the opportunity for your child to grow educationally and to succeed academically. The Inspection Report of 2006 noted, “Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn is a good school and it has a large number of outstanding features…..” The high standards we achieve both at KS3 and KS4 are a credit to the hard work of both staff and pupils. Equally, we are proud of the additional achievements of our pupils - whether in Sports, Music, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, or simply, to become a rounded individual - all are important in developing each pupil’s talents to the full. We pride ourselves in the partnership we nurture and develop between parents and the school and welcome the opportunity to work closely for the benefit of your child. Ysgol Tywyn is a bilingual comprehensive school that celebrated 120 years in 2014. The site is about 100 yards from the High Street of Tywyn, which is a small coastal town in south Gwynedd with a population of some four thousand. The school, with 297 pupils on roll in September 2018, and 15 full-time teaching staff, (including Senior Management Team) 5 part-time staff, and 8 Learning Support Staff, is an 11-16 school. 16+ pupils travel to a variety of colleges/schools in Gwynedd, Powys Dyfed, and beyond, though the majority go to Coleg Llandrillo (Dolgellau). The approximate annual catchment intake of 55 pupils comes from four primary schools, stretching from Craig y Deryn, Llanegryn to the north, Corris to the east, and Pennal to the south, and thus many travels some distance to school. In addition, several trips from outside the catchment area. The home and educational background of the pupils is varied and includes those who come from a home where both parents are Welsh-speaking, to those whose knowledge of Welsh is very limited, only having moved into the area recently. The school aims to offer a friendly and welcoming atmosphere that supports a learning and working environment and to this end has always aimed to involve parents actively in their children’s educational well-being. - As a Welsh school, we encourage an understanding and knowledge of the heritage of Wales as well as producing fluent Welsh speakers. This is a Welsh school that has traditionally welcomed children from backgrounds that are linguistically Welsh-speaking and those that are not. The school originally opened its doors for the first time on 4th October 1965. This came after a period of many efforts by some of the parents of Burry Port as well as the friends of the school. There is no doubt that without the hard work and commitment of these people there would be no provision of Welsh-medium education in the area today. It is our belief as a staff that a close relationship is needed between the home and the school for children to reach their full potential. We invite parents to school during the autumn and summer terms to discuss the progress of their child, and both We or the staff are available to discuss any aspect of their development or school life in general. We do appreciate you making an appointment whenever possible. School Aims: To develop each child emotionally and socially so they can achieve their full potential. To create an awareness and interest in the religious dimension through discussing other religions as well as Christianity. To give the children moral values and to create an awareness of other people. To give every child an opportunity to develop an awareness of other people’s needs. To develop basic skills in every subject that is taught in the school remembering each child’s age and ability. To develop mathematical skills. To introduce them to the scientific world. To develop language in all its forms, so that it may be a purposeful and meaningful tool in communicating, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and the appreciation of literature. To create an awareness and appreciation of neighbors, language, heritage, and environment of the child. To develop self-expression through music, mime, drama, art, and technology as well as physical education. To create an awareness of the need for personal hygiene and good manners. We think very highly of our school and believe we offer quality teaching and learning opportunities to your children and an atmosphere which enhances the development of the whole child. In the firmly held belief that the purpose of Primary Education is to lay foundations for the future, the school seeks to educate and develop its pupils in a caring, supportive environment, to match learning, as far as possible, to the capability of individual children, to maintain an expectation of high standards, to foster the promotion of children’s self-esteem and to develop sound understanding and relationships between teachers, children, their parents, and the wider community. We are very proud of the inclusive education we provide for a wide range of pupils at Tywyn. In the firmly held belief that attitude towards others is as important as a personal and academic achievement the Headteacher and staff are consistent in their view that children should always treat others as they wish to be treated themselves, should always respect the property and belongings of others, should always work hard and do their best and should strive for personal improvement every day.
