  9. Little Yarra Steiner School is co-educational and based on Christian spiritual principles as given by the Austrian philosopher and educationalist Dr. Rudolf Steiner. By these principles teachers strive in freedom to create the physical and educational environment that can best help the incarnating child to develop such qualities of will, feeling, and thought as will lead them to fulfill their earthly destiny with dignity and confidence. The location for Little Yarra Steiner School began with a gift: in 1986, while the school’s first Kindergarten and Prep group were getting underway in temporary premises in Wesburn, local farmer, Alan Earle, agreed to have the school built on his property along the Little Yarra River. When Alan’s land proved too flood-prone for major building development, he gave his land to be sold so that a more suitable property could be bought for the school. Alan’s gift enabled the purchase of the current property and the school in 1989 was able to move from a small Public Hall to its new home, a beautiful 60-acre block, also along the Little Yarra River, two kilometers south of the center of Yarra Junction. The beauty, central location, and generous size of the property, which was more than what was needed for the school, gave rise to an initial broader long term vision which included a bio-dynamic farm and other cultural initiatives such as a performing arts center, recording studio, artisans workshops, adult education facilities and similar ventures complementary to the school and forming part of a larger spiritually and culturally inspired center arising over time within a supportive community. Since moving to Little Yarra Road with a handful of children in 1989, the school has grown to over 300 students, ranging from Kindergarten through to class 12. With the inception of the first class 12 in 2004, the school has been able to offer an exciting program that embraces Steiner’s indications within the framework of the VCE, as well as an optional Class 12 project successfully pioneered within the Steiner School movement overseas and in Australia. With the consolidation of the primary and completion of the secondary school, the magnitude of Alan Earle’s generous gift can now be seen and appreciated as it continues to bear fruit. 13. The Hurstbridge Learning Co-operative is a parent-run, alternative primary school situated in beautiful bushland close to the township of Hurstbridge, Victoria. Established in 1973, the Co-op is a community of families committed to providing the resources and experiences needed to create a more stimulating alternative to the mainstream classroom. We believe that every member of the community can contribute to the learning and raising of its children. At Co-op, children are given a true voice. They work alongside their friends, parents, and teachers to develop their unique passions. Enrollments are kept to around thirty children. The intimate size of the Co-op creates a community much like an extended family. The Co-op values play and child-inspired learning. Child-inspired learning creates an environment where parents learn also, not only from the children but from each other as well. The very name ‘the Co-op” acknowledges this reciprocal effect. Activities and projects provide opportunities for parents and children to participate and learn together. Excursions, camps, and visitors to the school enhance this shared experience of learning. We believe that, when provided with a positive and supportive environment, children have a natural curiosity and desire to learn. Natural curiosity and passion are at the heart of both the teaching and learning philosophy at the Co-op. Co-op is seen to be part of a life-long learning process, which doesn’t start and finish with the school day. The aim is to respect each child, accept their individual development and recognize the child’s ownership of their learning. We also support non-authoritarian conflict resolution processes that respect differences and empower the children to develop solutions that meet everyone’s needs. The Learning Co-operative is committed to the fundamental belief that all individuals are unique and, as such, we each have our unique learning agenda and preferred ways of learning. We, therefore, strive to create an environment where children are free to explore their creativity and individuality and those of others. Choice, co-operation, open-mindedness, non-judgemental attitudes, wonder, and curiosity are defining features of the learning environment. We are committed to the principles of self-awareness and empowerment where individuals have input into their learning and personal development. We are committed to the process of consensus, where each individual believes that their opinion, thoughts, or feelings are respected, acknowledged, and validated and they have an obligation to both express and articulate their needs and views and listen to others do the same. We are committed to creating an environment that is nurturing and caring of the individual both in times of achievement and in times of struggle. We are committed to an environment that fosters and promotes a love of learning, sharing, and collaboration, peace, and non-violence. We believe that good education must enhance our humanity and foster the values that will enable us to live in harmony with our fellow human beings and with our environment. Education must focus on the person as ‘person’ and not just as ‘student’. We believe that the Learning Co-operative is a diverse environment. We are inspired by and committed to, this diversity. We believe it is integral to our philosophy and fundamental principles. These principles are tolerance, patience, understanding, forgiveness, cooperation, respect, trust, compassion, diversity for oneself and the community in which we live, consensus, empowerment, and personal integrity. We believe that an environment and community that aspires to these principles can create a place where children will develop a strong sense of self, as well as empathy for others. We believe that this then will enable children to pursue their natural curiosity, wonder, and inquiry and help them develop their clear values and visions for life. View full school

  15. We deliver a balanced school curriculum guided by Steiner's educational philosophy and encompassing all developmental domains: social/emotional, cognitive, physical, language, and creative. The atmosphere of our playgroup is warm, gentle, and enfolding. The children are surrounded by calming pastel colors and natural materials. Beautiful items such as handmade dolls, wooden toys, blocks, silk scarves, gum nuts, and shells are used to encourage creative, imaginative play and develop a sensitivity to, as well as a respect for, nature. Other activities, such as painting, cooking, gardening, and simple crafts further enhance this. Nothing is taken for granted, for example, at morning tea we form a circle and give thanks to the earth and sun for our fruits and water. Music, song, dance, and celebration of the seasons and festivals bring our families together, to share in folk wisdom and experience the rhythms of life. We aim to be child-centered, the activities, the songs, the talk, and the play are centered on the children. In doing so, we are creating a special sanctuary for the children and parents in an otherwise busy and commercialized world. As our foremost focus is the children and their experience of playgroup as a safe, serene environment, we save most of our personal stories until morning tea time, a truly social time. Being aware of the dream-like quality of the child's soul, a special mood of stillness for the storytelling time has to be created by the parents and the Playgroup Leader. We guide the children into that mood with a quiet, soothing song and lighting of the story candle. Nature stories, fairy tales, and stories of everyday activities all appeal to little children. Puppets and props are used to enliven the story and to hold the children's attention. From each story, they will absorb what they can and there is no need for the adults to explain the hidden moral of the story. Rainbow Playgroup is a place where the mood is of support, reassurance, and non-judgment for both adult and child. Please take the time to enjoy your mornings at Rainbow Playgroup and feel free to explore our parent library, peruse The Gum Leaf Shop and, of course, ask your Playgroup Leader any questions you may have. We recognize the worth and uniqueness of each individual and provide a cooperative environment that seeks to develop the whole child, so that each one may grow in their relationship with God and serve Him. Today this vision remains central to the life of the school. Kuyper Christian School is a member of Christian Education National (CEN). CEN provides many resources for our teaching staff and holds yearly conferences with workshops that all our staff attend. Christian Education National provides and nurtures a strong sense of partnership for board members to strengthen their vision and to fulfill their governance obligations. Welcome to the Kuyper Christian School journey. I hope you find it informative and helpful in the decisions you may be making for your children’s schooling. Kuyper is a vibrant community run by a committed group of parents who are seeking to provide authentic Christian education for their children. For over 30 years, Kuyper has sought to nurture children and equip them for living a life acknowledging God’s ownership of all things. This includes learning in and understanding His word. The understanding places Jesus in His rightful place as Lord of all and emphasizes the importance of understanding the saving grace of Jesus His Son. As our school motto says, we are “Learning in Gods’ World”, so we seek to acknowledge the Creator and Sustainer of life in all that we do. As a member of Christian Education National, Kuyper is well supported and resourced. CEN is an Australia-wide organization that incorporates over 75 schools that hold similar beliefs and values to our own. At Kuyper Christian School we are committed to: Working in partnership with parents to care for and provide a rich and challenging learning environment for each child. Emphasizing the uniqueness of each child and the importance of developing their God-given gifts and talents encouraging them to serve Christ in all they do. Delivering a creative and challenging curriculum that is a faithful expression of a Bible-based Christian worldview. Developing a team of teachers who will encourage each other in delivering rigorous and innovative educational experiences for students. Developing a warm and encouraging community both within our school and outwards to our local community seeking to enrich the lives of others. 2017 opens with the excitement and new challenge of Senior classes at Kuyper Christian School with our pioneer Year 11 and 12 students. Our educational program draws on our dedicated teachers’ years of experience and the broad opportunities available for learning. 21. Koonwarra Village School (KVS) opened in 2012. The school is an independent primary school offering enrolment for children in Foundation to Grade 6. Founded from a shared vision of Fiona McKenzie, Sarah Maclean, and Hadassah Wanstall, KVS aims to provide a human-scale, democratic school life that inspires a life-long love of learning for students and staff alike. Our philosophy and guiding principles inform how we go about our teaching and learning. KVS receives government funding, like other Australian independent schools, in addition to tuition fees from parents. The maximum number of students to be enrolled at KVS is sixty-five. Belinda Gray, Shannon Letcher, and Lizzie Price work in support roles across the school. Fiona McKenzie is the School Coordinator and is responsible for administrative activities and facilities and is assisted by Philippa Lloyd, Jacqui Haysom, Belinda Gray, Shannon Letcher, and John Ogden. Our teachers are known as Mentors as it reflects the role they perform and the approach we have to teach and learning at KVS. Relationships are integral to the learning journey and students have the opportunity to work with several Mentors during the week as this allows the children to connect with a range of adults in different ways and form a wide variety of relationships. The Triskel students have also been able to select a Personal Mentor mentor with who the students feel comfortable communicating about any aspect of their school life. The Personal Mentor is the Mentor that predominantly helps the student manage their learning strategies, sets goals to develop their executive skills, and supports them in any social ‘bumps’. 23. Kesser Torah College offers a unique education in Sydney: an authentic Torah education together with a rigorous General Studies program. However, our point of difference is further reinforced by the Torah values that permeate every aspect of the school day – and beyond. This means that our students are taught to see the very complex world of decision-making through the prism of a very clearly defined Torah lens. The journey from adolescence to adulthood is very often plagued by many competing priorities and influences. While our students are no strangers to the modern, sophisticated environment challenging them daily by growing up in the vibrant and diverse society that is Sydney, Australia, Kesser Torah College steers and guides them through these competing tensions by providing consistency of meaning and purpose: a Torah-true compass that offers them a roadmap, not only for their childhood and teenage years but for life. Our students are fortunate to be taught by exceptional educators, dedicated, not only to the subjects they teach but to the education of the “whole child”. A real teacher can teach his/her students to teach themselves. We believe that each student should be nurtured to achieve his or her own personal best. Moreover, the function of any great school is to educate beyond the classroom, and at KTC, the many extra-curricular, informal, and experiential programs do just that. As it so aptly says in Kidushin 40B Study is important because it leads to action”) We look forward to welcoming you as partners in this exciting journey and trust that you too will be inspired to grow with us, as together we teach our children to love and live their Judaism – daily. KTC Early Learning is nestled within the grounds of Kesser Torah College. We serve the Jewish Community and follow an integrated General and Jewish Studies curriculum. The proverb takes a village to raise a child encapsulates our approach with children. KTC is an entire community of different people interacting with children for them to learn, experience, and grow in a safe environment. KTC early learning is an integral part of the school. This integration provides your child with an advantage as it allows them to form a connection to school from a very young age. This continuum of learning and sense of belonging is a unique feature of the school. Research tells us very clearly that when you belong you become. View full school
