St Marks opened its doors to 180 learners on 26 January 1999. Since then we have grown to full capacity and have built separate facilities for the High School and Primary School. The visionaries, Bruce and Sandy Woolard saw the need for a private Christian education at an affordable cost to the community. Their passion for ministry inspired a call to reach children and their parents/guardians practically. Not only was the vision quality education, but mere importantly offering spiritual and emotional support throughout their school career. A happy child is a successful child. Computer classes form part of the curriculum and are offered during or after school hours. There are between 32 and 36 forty-five-minute sessions per year. The course caters to all levels and fees are included. The program includes a Year-end assessment, moderation, and certification for those who pass the assessment with 70% or more. This is a nationally moderated course and prepares learners thoroughly for the world of computers. These are included in the School Fees but all workbooks, dictionaries, and rule books are at the parent's expense as they will be retained by the learner at the end of each year. Tests are set throughout the year with formal examinations being written only twice a year during the second and fourth terms. The teachers will prepare reports at the end of each term. No formal examinations are written by the Foundation Phase learners (Grade R-3) as their work is evaluated daily. Reports are issued at the end of each term. Promotion requirements are based on the National Curriculum Guidelines. Learners will be assessed on a CASS (Continuous Assessment) mark and their examination mark in both June and November for learning subjects. If a learner is absent for an exam, a valid doctor's certificate must be produced for the learner to be granted permission to write the examination/s on their return to school. Test marks and continuous assessment will be included in their report in March and September. There is so much more to school sport than just the benefit of physical activity. Sport builds character and self-esteem in a child. It teaches patience and perseverance. Sport inculcates discipline and teaches the value of winning and losing with dignity. The awareness of others and learning to work in a team is an invaluable life skill. At St Mark's, these are the lessons we aim to instill whilst teaching our learners the benefits of a well-rounded, healthy, and balanced approach to life. We have competitive team sports and can challenge other schools and hold our own. We are always looking for opportunities to grow our sporting program but have to take into account that a larger spectrum of choices will weaken our teams due to our smaller numbers. If your child excels at a certain sporting discipline, the school will fully support them in joining a team at the club level. St Mark’s is a two-form entry community school set in the heart of Hanwell, which is part of the London Borough of Ealing. We promote our values through having high expectations of all our stakeholders, delivering high-quality learning experiences, and creating a stimulating, safe and healthy environment. St Mark’s benefits from magnificent outside space including a large field, hard pitch, and a nature area with a pond. Our new building has given us a spacious hall, in which we can celebrate as a whole school and enjoy lunchtimes. We now have three new state-of-the-art classrooms and extra teaching spaces around the school. Our children are engaged and enthusiastic learners and benefit from a broad, balanced, and creative curriculum. There are many opportunities for children to take part in music and sport and the curriculum is enriched by trips and visits in every year group. Our recent OFSTED inspection shows that the leadership team has maintained a good quality of education in the school and that pupils consistently make good progress and achieve well. The report states that the school places significant importance on the fostering of a friendly and accepting culture, something we are very proud of at St Mark’s. The key to our work is forging partnerships with parents and carers so that our children make the best possible progress. The nursery also has full wheelchair access. The nursery caters to 32 full-time pupils. The nursery is very spacious, with a lovely structured outdoor play area containing a living willow dome. This year we plan to continue to plant raised beds at the side of the nursery, and the children will be involved in planting and maintaining flowers and herbs. The nursery employs highly trained staff comprising of the Principal Teacher, a nursery teacher, three Early Years Practitioners, and two Early Years Assistants. At Simon Marks Jewish Primary School we are committed to ensuring that every pupil leaves our school with high aspirations, an enduring enthusiasm for learning, and the confidence to address the world on their terms. We are committed to the concept of lifelong learning by identifying opportunities for professional development, Jewish family education, and community learning of a high standard. Central to our success is the significance we attach to the relationships between the school, the parent body, and the local community. Simon Marks Jewish Primary School is a one-form entry, inclusive, modern orthodox Jewish school which nurtures strong ties with Israel. We welcome children from across the spectrum of Jewish practice and also from local families who are sympathetic to and respect the school’s Jewish and inclusive ethos. The school will admit 30 children to the reception class, including children for whom the school has been named in an Education, Health, and Care Plan. In the case of oversubscription, the school will give priority to those who meet a religious practice test based on guidelines from the Chief Rabbi. Those applicants wishing to be considered as priority applicants for available places will need to obtain a Certificate of Religious Practice (CRP) based on criteria such as the family’s synagogue attendance, prior commitment to Jewish education, and voluntary work within the community. All unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list and children will be ranked on the list by the admission criteria above. The waiting list will be maintained throughout the school year. Ranking on the waiting list is strictly based on the admissions criteria listed above. Priority will not be given to children based on the date of their application. Parents should make a formal application to the local authority by completing the In-Year application form. The Supplementary Information Form and Certificate of Religious Practice should be returned to the school. Applications will be considered in conformity with the oversubscription criteria and without delay. If a waiting list exists for the age-appropriate class a CRP will be required and the applicant will be added to the list. If there is a vacancy a CRP might not be required. I f a place in a Reception class is offered before a child is of compulsory school age, parents can request that their child’s entry be deferred until later in the same school year. This means that the place is held for the child and is not available to be offered to another child. Parents would not, however, be able to defer entry beyond the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday, nor beyond the academic year for which the original application was accepted. The school is committed to taking its fair share of children who are vulnerable and/or hard to place, as set out in locally agreed protocols. Accordingly, outside the normal admissions round the governing body is empowered to give absolute priority to a child where admission is requested under a local protocol that has been agreed for the current school year. The governing body has this power even when admitting the child would mean exceeding the published admission number (PAN). Research shows that good experiences in Nursery prepare children well for their lives ahead. It is here that they learn to share and make friends. They learn about being independent and try things for the first time on their own. We also hope that this is an experience that you will enjoy and that you grow to feel that this is as much your Nursery as it is your child’s. Our Parent Support Advisor is Pam Webb. She is a qualified nursery nurse with many years of experience. She has worked with children with different abilities and from diverse backgrounds within the school. Her experience of child development and the education system will be invaluable in her role as a parent support advisor. Recently we had lots of snow in Marks Gate. The children and teachers in Daisies Class enjoyed going outside to explore the snow! We all wrapped up warmly in our coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Daisies Class have enjoyed a visit to Marks Gate Library! Some of Daisies Class parents came to help us and we all walked to the library together. When we arrived we were very quiet to make sure that we didn’t disturb anybody else who was using the library. Marcus works in the library and he told us how important it is to take care of books. Can you remember some of the ways to take care of books? Daisies Class looked at the children’s books and children with a library card took books home. Do you have a library card? What library books have you borrowed? Finally, we all listened carefully whilst Marcus read us a funny story. When learning about our topic ‘Head to Toe’, Daisies Class have been using playdough to make their faces and the faces of their friends.
