Georgia Southwestern State University, a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, was founded in 1906 as the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. In 1926, the General Assembly granted a charter authorizing the school to offer two years of college work and to change its name to the Third District Agricultural and Normal College. The new charter resulted in the expansion of the curriculum to include courses in teacher training, and the State Department of Education gave teacher certification to students who completed the program. In 1932, by legislative enactment, this college and other state-supported institutions of higher learning in Georgia were organized into the University System of Georgia and placed under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents. As a unit of the University System, the College continued its two-year curriculum and changed its name to Georgia Southwestern College. In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. This action resulted in the development of baccalaureate programs, and the first bachelor's degrees were conferred in June 1968. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Southwestern State University in July of 1996. A program of graduate studies leading to the Master of Education degree was approved by the Board of Regents and initiated in June 1973. This program has undergone continuous growth and development, and the Specialist in Education degree was begun in the summer of 1982. The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983. The Master of Science in Computer Science was added in the spring of 1986, and the Master of Business Administration was added to the curriculum in 2003. Most recently, the Master of Arts in English was added in the fall of 2011, and the Master Science in Nursing (online) was added in the fall of 2012. Among distinguished GSW alumni are former President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and the late Griffin Bell, former U.S. Attorney General.

Service Learning may be a required component or an optional one. Service Learning projects can occur within our immediate Weatherford community, the county, the entire western and central Oklahoma region, or the state. They can also occur when a class on the SWOSU campus helps another campus entity design the Service Learning brochure. Our program has a rather broad definition of "community!. The Oklahoma Territorial Legislature Act established the University in 1901 as the Southwestern Normal School. The Normal School was authorized to offer two years of training and four years of preparatory work for students who were not qualified for college admission. The first classes met in 1903. In 1920 the preparatory or academy courses were eliminated, and two additional years of college work were added. The state legislature approved a change of name to Southwestern State Teachers College. The first baccalaureate degrees were awarded in May 1921. Other significant changes in name and purposes occurred in 1939 when the institution was designated as Southwestern State College of Diversified Occupations. In 1941, it became the Southwestern Institute of Technology when the college added a School of Pharmacy, degree work in the arts and sciences, and trade schools to its original function as a teacher-training institution. In 1953 the University inaugurated an advanced professional program leading to the Master of a Teaching degree, now called the Master of Education degree. In 1974 the Oklahoma State Legislature changed the institution's name to Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). In addition to the M. Ed. degree in 16 different fields of specialization, SWOSU offers the Master of Business Administration, the M. S. degrees in Management and School Psychology, the Master of Music degree, and its first professional doctorate program, the Doctor of Pharmacy. On July 1, 1987, by an act of the Oklahoma Legislature, Sayre Junior College merged with Southwestern Oklahoma State University. This location, designated as Southwestern Oklahoma State University at Sayre, is 59 miles west of Weatherford.
  6. Southwestern College/New Earth Institute is a premier graduate school for master's degrees in Counseling and Art Therapy/Counseling. Located in the international art/travel Mecca of Santa Fe, New Mexico, we have been training consciousness-centered therapists and leaders in the mental health field since 1979. Our holistic approach to personal and planetary wellness emphasizes developing our students' inner strengths as a necessary precursor to helping others. Aligned with their truth, our students can explore any material with their clients, maintaining a curiosity rather than fear or against-ness in the face of others' differences. If you have read about other programs, you can probably sense already that our approach includes a unique blend of compassion, collaboration, and exploration of strengths along with the clinical awareness necessary for proper healing work. We are fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the American Art Therapy Association. According to our most recent alumni survey, ninety-two percent of our graduates found work in the mental health professions, and ninety-nine percent passed the licensing exam the first time. Our graduates are in therapist and leadership positions all over New Mexico and the United States (forty-seven states.) Our instructors are reflective practitioners representing many different schools of thought and sharing the consciousness-centered, experiential approach to transformational learning. Located at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains foot, Santa Fe enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, gorgeous mountain vistas, sunrises, and sunsets like no place in the world, a diverse and colorful cultural mix of Native American, Hispanic, and European influences. It is considered by many to be a spiritual center of the United States, and artists from all over the world come here to work with the breathtaking landscapes in the new and magical light of the high desert. The mission of Southwestern College is "Transforming Consciousness Through Education." As understood at Southwestern College, Consciousness is the capacity and willingness to live life with intentionality and the highest possible level of awareness regarding our personal, social, and spiritual purpose for being here. Higher Consciousness or awareness creates a capacity for enhanced decision-making and resourcing in our lives, which supports the over-arching aim of all helping profession activity—empowerment. The primary vehicles for facilitating this awareness shift are our Master's Degrees in Counseling, Art Therapy/Counseling, and Art Therapy for Clinical Professionals, The New Earth Institute, and the Tierra Nueva Counseling Center. The College creates a professional environment within which advanced Counseling and Art Therapy skills are developed in the context of the student's evolving understanding of self, self-in-relation, and spiritual growth. The enhanced Consciousness of the students potentiates intensive clinical training, allowing them to assist clients in moving toward greater self-awareness, empowerment, and life satisfaction. In this way, the mission ripples out in widening circles, impacting the world well beyond the more immediate learning environment we create at Southwestern College. The College is dedicated to creating a professional environment for teaching and learning clinical helping skills and the conscious and intentional exploration of the spiritual dimension of human learning and living. We strive to provide a multicultural learning environment that fosters ethical development as a foundation for professional growth and excellence in Counseling, Art Therapy/Counseling, and related helping activities. Southwestern College offers a holistic perspective in all our degree programs, whether you seek a Master's degree in Counseling, Art Therapy/Counseling, or Art Therapy for Clinical Professionals. We are an especially good fit for an adult learner who wants to deepen and enhance your life relationship while enhancing your professional skills in psychology. The tuition at Southwestern College for 2018-19 is a competitive $580 per quarter unit. As a private institution, there is no difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. Most Southwestern College students finance their graduate work using some combination of Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loans, scholarships, personal or family savings, working while in school, Federal Direct PLUS loans, or private lender loans. The prospects for employment in the mental health field in today's world are quite bright. Our art therapy and counseling graduates are finding jobs before or soon after graduation. They are working in mental health clinics, hospitals, recovery centers, schools, nursing homes, and private practice. They are working with the elderly, children, infants, families, and couples. A number of our students are working with veterans and military families. Others are working with refugees, trauma victims from natural disasters, and people challenged by transition and loss. Employers have offered us feedback about the level of confidence, the competency, and the leadership abilities of our graduates. The roots of Southwestern College can be traced back to 1945 when a group of forward-thinking individuals began collecting spiritual and metaphysical books to establish the Quimby Memorial Library. In 1963, the library was dedicated in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The collection included the works of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, the Father of New Thought, and a significant early influence on American healing and spiritual traditions. Today, Southwestern College continues to teach in a holistic, transformational, and experiential way. Students are challenged to acquire knowledge and skills in the context of a rigorous applied curriculum. They learn to cultivate the qualities of transformational leadership to assist others in realizing their full potential. They graduate from the College with the skills necessary to foster transformation in themselves and others. Our graduates, faculty, and board members are some of the most prominent professionals in the world of mental health in New Mexico today.

Through excellent faculty committed to promoting the highest level of professionalism, Southwestern seeks to create a vibrant, diverse academic community with a student-centered approach to legal education. Southwestern students study law from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, bringing a rich diversity to the student body. The Admissions Committee, therefore, considers many aspects of a prospective student's credentials beyond grades and test scores. Admission to Southwestern is based on several factors that may be predictive of an applicant's success in law study. The Higher Education Opportunity Act conditions the eligibility of educational institutions to participate in Title IV programs on the development of and compliance with a code of conduct prohibiting conflicts of interest for its financial aid personnel Southwestern's officers, employees, and agents are required to comply with this code of conduct. Southwestern's academic offerings enable our students to follow either a broad-based or a personalized curriculum focusing on a particular area of law while earning the 87 units required for the J.D. degree. Beyond the 18 required courses, you can select from 200+ elective courses and numerous experiential opportunities to design your study program. Southwestern is the only law school to offer four J.D. programs that differ in both scheduling and instructional approach. Southwestern is a leader in curricular innovation and expertise, particularly in entertainment and media law, international law, criminal law, and trial advocacy/litigation. The required curriculum is enriched by approximately 200 electives, 150 externship placements, six clinics, and four practicums. Upper-division enhancements include over 50 professional skills courses, a January intersession, capstone courses, and special mini-term courses taught by international legal experts. Some of the most rewarding hours in law school are those spent applying what you have learned in your classes to a real-world environment. These valuable and practical hands-on experiences are provided through various clinics, externships, practicums, and public interest opportunities. At Southwestern, you will find that it is difficult to get lost in the crowd. This is a manifestation of the personal, intimate experience Southwestern offers our students. It is a nurturing, supportive environment where diversity is celebrated, and students find future colleagues, caring mentors, and inspiring role models. Southwestern's diversity defines the law school. When you are living and working in a place as eclectic as L.A., you have to understand the worldviews of the people around you. Everyone at Southwestern offers something different, and it makes for a balanced and transformative legal education. Southwestern Law School is committed to helping students become reflective and self-fulfilled professionals who can integrate legal professionalism, ethics, values, doctrine, theory, and skills to become outstanding professionals in a wide variety of settings. The learning objectives listed embody this broader mission. For 100 years, Southwestern has continued to provide progressive legal education programs that prepare students with diverse backgrounds to earn positions of responsibility and trust within the legal profession and the community. Southwestern Law School began in 1911 when a small group of determined students first met with a tutor in the old Union Oil building in downtown Los Angeles. This collective, known as Southwestern College of Law, was organized as a nonprofit educational institution by John J. Schumacher. The expansion of Southwestern's physical facilities provided more usable space for learning, research, study, informal gatherings, co-curricular and recreational activities, networking with members of the profession, and interaction with distinguished visitors. In recent years, the faculty has focused on the development of innovative courses of study, nationally recognized curricular innovations and academic support programs, award-winning co-curricular programs, joint degree programs with The Drucker Graduate School of Management and California State University, Dominguez Hills, and two new LL.M. degree programs (Entertainment and Media Law and Individualized Studies). Emphasis has also continued in the public interest and pro bono opportunities, including three new clinical programs and public interest grant and fellowship programs, enhancing lawyering skills and professionalism, and the recruitment of outstanding legal scholars and young academic stars to the faculty. As the law school celebrates its 100th anniversary, the Southwestern community looks forward to an exciting second century benefiting from a strong institutional legacy, a broad and thriving alumni base, a talented and dedicated faculty, a location at the center of one of the most important legal markets in the United States, and a remarkable physical facility that justifies the splendid tag line - "A landmark in legal education. 17. View full university

20. Here, you can reach your highest potential, participate in sports and activities, and make lifelong friendships. Our students study on two picturesque and complementary campuses in San Marino, California, and Rimrock, Arizona. Southwestern's vision is to offer American and international students personalized, stimulating classes and supportive, nurturing care that allows individual student success, understanding of diverse cultures, and preparation for college and life. Southwestern offers and shall continue to offer programs to strengthen students through small classes—typically of eight to twelve students—with personalized lessons, achievement grouping, two unique campuses in safe environments, and especially by supporting student achievements through an involved, nurturing, caring staff who create an environment for individual student success. Southwestern balances enrollments by actively promoting cultural diversity and social heterogeneity in its student body. We seek to admit motivated, successful students who want smaller classes and personalized instruction. We also believe in giving a chance to students who may have experienced unsuccessful schooling elsewhere when they have the abilities and willingness to try. We believe in giving students love and encouragement to overcome obstacles and provide and stimulate participation in a wide variety of activities and athletics that they might not encounter in a larger setting. We work with students who want to be here and help their fellow students. If a student continues to hurt the community, we will help find a more appropriate placement for that student. Our staff decisions about students will be based on each case's assessment, rather than a comparison with rigid standards. We will work to recruit American and international students who will benefit from and add to our school. Support and encouragement for students will be our standard in all academic and disciplinary decisions. We will remove obstacles from students who want to reach their full potentials and encourage students at each step. We will pay special attention to each individual, particularly those needing our guidance. We shall keep building our caring and love of students, using patience and the extra time we gain because of our small class sizes. Our object is never to fail students unless they give us no choice but to help them be successful. This takes all our best teaching skills, and we are pledged to use those skills. Maintenance and enhancement of our two campuses will continue to build the most attractive, safe, comfortable, complete facilities possible. You will arrive at Southwestern as a citizen of your country and leave as a citizen of the world. As you interact with students from different cultures, you will gain a new perspective and make treasured friendships that reach across international borders. Southwestern offers dozens of opportunities beyond schoolwork. You may be active in clubs, create art and music, participate in student government, join our sports teams, and donate your time in community service. Students celebrate several special events, and field trips are regularly scheduled to take advantage of the area's learning opportunities. View full school

The first, Southwestern Bible School, was established at Enid, Oklahoma, in 1927 under the Reverend P. C. Nelson leadership. The second, Shield of Faith Bible School (containing a Bible school, a grade school, and a high school), began at Amarillo, Texas, in 1931 under the Reverend Guy Shields direction. The third, Southern Bible Institute (operating in conjunction with the Richey Evangelistic Temple), began at Goose Creek, Texas, in 1931. It was started by Rev. J. T. Little in Trinity Tabernacle and later moved to Houston in 1933. Shield of Faith moved to Fort Worth in 1935. In 1940, a merger brought Southern Bible Institute to Fort Worth. The Texas District Council of the Assemblies of God took ownership and direction of the newly formed South Central Bible Institute. The school in Enid then merged with South Central in 1941, when the name was changed to Southwestern Bible Institute. In 1943, the Institute moved to its present facilities in Waxahachie, Texas. During the 1944-45 school year, a junior college curriculum was added to the school's program and soon accounted for about half of its enrollment. By 1948 SAGU received accreditation with the American Association of Bible Colleges as a charter member. View full university

In 1892, Seventh-day Adventists living near Dallas chose a committee to locate a school in Johnson County. The committee members personally financed 800 acres, five miles east of Cleburne, for $8,000. At a time in our nation, when railroads were broke, banks closed, and businesses failed, hearty Adventist families converged on the land in November and December 1893. They brought all their earthly possessions in covered wagons and began to clear the land and build houses. Most lived in tents during those first winter months. View full university
