However, the child can regain these 5 minutes by displaying effort and behaving as he/she should. If a child’s behavior doesn’t improve we may use alternative strategies such as loss of playtime. In some severe circumstances, we might contact parents to discuss a matter. View full school

Ysgol Gymraeg Pen-y-Groes aim(s) to provide an environment in which children and young people feel safe, secure, valued, and respected and feel confident, and know-how to approach adults if they are in difficulties believing they will be effectively listened to. - We at Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmnedd are fully committed to ensuring that every child attending the school receives the best possible education and is supported to achieve their full potential. The Welsh Government expects all pupils to attend school at least 95% of the time! Missing school jeopardizes your child’s chances of fulfilling their potential as regular attendance improves the chances of children being successful at school. If children are not in school the likelihood is that they are not learning. Good attendance contributes to good results. Regular school attendance is essential if our children are to have the best opportunity for future success in life. School attendance matters when it’s your child’s future. To support regular school attendance, the school will no longer be able to authorize a child’s absence from school for a family holiday. If you insist on taking your child out of school for non-authorized activities, the Local Authority is obliged to consider legal measures under the Education Act 1996 and you may be subject to a fine or prosecution. We do not want to have to revert to taking enforcement action in this matter but we have a responsibility to children that we must discharge if the need arises. We very much hope that this can be avoided by us working together in the interest of our children. We believe that regular attendance is crucial if a child wants to maximize his/her time at the school. The school emphasizes that regular attendance is essential to ensure the child’s educational and social development. The majority of parents and carers are keen to ensure that their child gets every opportunity to develop to the full, and want their child to receive an education of the highest quality. Persistent absences mean that there is no continuity in the learning process and therefore leads to underachievement. You cannot make up for the time that has been lost in the classroom learning experience and the social experience - this can lead to problems establishing relationships with peers or staff within the school. Often, a child who is absent or late regularly will feel uncomfortable at school. A child does not enjoy the experience of reaching school late and having to walking into the class or hall after everyone else. View full school

We occupy the main building and the upper building which houses the Gymnasium. The Headteacher's and Clerk’s offices are situated on the upper floor of the main building. We value our contact with parents. Because of the important role we, as a school community, feel that you contribute towards your children's academic and social development, we encourage parental participation in a variety of situations. We encourage parent participation in several ways, even though the majority of our parents do not speak Welsh. We have invaluable help with concert preparations e.g. making costumes, props, etc., help to decorate corridors in particular themes, and parents meet to make items for our P.T.A. School Fete. We hope that all parents will encourage their children to complete their homework, involve themselves in our Home/School tasks, read to their children and talk about books and pictures (English or Welsh). We also feel that we need to talk to you regularly about your child's progress. We ask all parents to reply to any requests made by letter by returning reply slips or sending toys, photos, books, etc. with the children: - it is important to the children themselves. All requests are aimed at helping to develop children's independence, reliability, and feeling of belonging to our community and to strengthen our links with you as parents. We ask every parent and pupil to read, consider and sign our Home/School Agreement to reinforce our policy of working together. Our school covers a wide catchment area, serving the Ogmore Valley from Nantymoel to Blackmill, the Garw Valley from Blaengarw to Llangeinor and Bettws. Children from all these areas can make a request to the school Nursery class (which accommodates 30 children) on attaining the age of 3 years by August 31st or, if they are not admitted then, to the Reception Class the following September after reaching the age of 4 years by August 31st. Pupils transfer to Ysgol Gyfun Llangynwyd, Maesteg at the age of 11 years. Pupils are accepted in the September of the year in which they attain their fourth birthday (Rising Fours). Their entry is staggered over a few weeks to enable a settling-in period. Pupils will stay for mornings, then for lunch as well before staying for full days. Detailed information is available to parents when they visit us in the summer term before their child starting in September View full school
- We aim to be an excellent school and to make decisions in the interests of pupils. Choosing the best school for your child is vital and choosing to send your child to a Welsh-medium primary school is an important decision. There are many advantages to being able to speak two languages and enjoy two cultures and by choosing Welsh-medium education this is something that they can enjoy. To ensure the success of the individual child within the education process. To ensure an effective education for the individual, in which the child is central to the learning process and each individual’s contribution is respected. To ensure that each child has the opportunity to develop emotionally, socially, morally, and intellectually to his/her utmost. To ensure a happy and safe environment within the school, and an ethos that promotes the Welsh language and culture, and that the school’s environment reflects respect through high standards of display and care. To foster close links with the local community and begin preparing children to become responsible adults in their community. We seek to develop personal qualities such as perseverance, diligence, self-expression, service, loyalty, honesty, and self-confidence and to encourage self-respect as well as respect for others. We strongly encourage every child to play an active and prominent role in school life. By careful organization, the school aims to provide the best possible education for its pupils. The school is divided into age-determined year classes. At present, there are six ‘Learning Areas’ in the Foundation Phase and seven Junior classes. Nursery children are admitted to the school as soon as possible following their third birthday. Nursery children attend half-day sessions. A particular emphasis is placed on standards of good behavior, consideration for others, and respect for property. The school believes that parents are responsible for the behavior of their children, and within the school situation, this behavior must be acceptable to the community therein and reflect the values and standards expected by the school. The school believes that children have a right to order and discipline to enable them to work in peace and security. The overall discipline and enforcement of school rules is the responsibility of the Headteacher with the assistance of the staff. An emphasis is placed on self-discipline, so that order and care are an integral part of the school’s ethos. At our school, there is a clear emphasis on PRAISE and REWARD, rather than drawing others' attention to unacceptable behavior. If a child has misbehaved, then that child needs to be informed of the reasons behind the member of staff's (teaching and non-teaching) discontent with him/her. In most cases, the child's misbehavior will not warrant punishment, but if punitive action is justified then the punishment must reflect the seriousness of the deed. Punishment is usually administered through loss of privilege, and this can vary according to the child's interests. If a child fails to respond to these courses of action, parental consultation will take place. To recognize and acknowledge good behavior there is an existing rewards system at our school which places a great emphasis on PRAISE and REWARDS. Children must arrive at school in good time in the mornings a pupil arriving late may seriously disrupt not only his or her continuity of learning but also that of others, not to mention that child's teacher and learning support staff. - Ysgol Felinwnda, being a small rural school, can describe itself as having a happy and friendly environment where the children have an important role in the day-to-day arrangements. Each child is allowed to develop according to his or her ability and receive the utmost support that the teachers can offer. The school is divided into two classes, Miss Thomas is in charge of Nursery, Reception, Year 1, and 2, whilst Year 3, 4, 5, and Year 6 are taught by Mr. Thomas. This division is not rigidly adhered to because the staff exchange classes to fully utilize the teachers’ strengths and to enable the children to receive the best possible education. The school believes that parents play a crucial role in their child’s development, and consequently, an open door policy exists here, an arrangement by which following obtaining an appointment, parents may visit the school at any time to discuss their children’s development. One parent recently described Ysgol Felinwnda as “a Family School”, and that is exactly the aim and objective of staff and governors, namely to ensure that the children feel secure and confident thus enabling them to develop. To create an environment and an atmosphere, in which children may grow, develop and mature into confident individuals, who are aware of the welfare of others and are responsible members of the community. a)Answer the phone on a rota basis, supervise younger classes b)Give thanks at Urdd meetings, extra-curricular competitions c)Distribute goods to the elderly residing in the area during Harvest Thanksgiving, raise money for funds such as Operation Christmas Child, Barnados. To provide children with every opportunity to develop their skills, gifts, talents, and interests, to get to know themselves: their weaknesses and strengths. "develop their gifts, talents, and interests" - e.g. compete at the schools and the Urdd Swimming Gala, receive instrumental lessons, contribute to the Urdd's stage competitions and homework. "understand something of their weaknesses and strengths" - that children have an opportunity of regularly appraising their work, share responsibilities once they recognize others' strengths. No effort is spared to ensure that every pupil feels part of the school family. The current school opened in 1976, but education has been provided on the premises for over a century. Use is still occasionally made of the Old School, which accommodates the Nursery School. The current building has been planned as a partly open plan and consists of eight purpose-built classes as well as a hall, play area, and green land. - Gwynedd Education Authority operates a bilingual policy in all its schools and is also developing a bilingual policy for the Further Education establishments within the county. The aim is to develop the ability of pupils and students within the county to be confidently bilingual so that they can be full members of the bilingual society of which they are apart. All educational establishments within the county should reflect and reinforce the language policy in their administration, their social life and pastoral arrangements as well as their academic provision. The school exists to celebrate the children's achievements and to develop them as individuals who appreciate their environment in its entirety. The development of moral and philanthropic values, as well as self–esteem, and tolerance towards others, is encouraged. We strive to ensure that each pupil feels happy and secure within a disciplined community, which puts great value in its life and work. Importance is put on maintaining and raising children’s achievement standards, so that each individual is allowed to achieve his/her full potential, but it must be remembered that the school has a responsibility for more than just teaching children, which means that the children must be considered in their entirety, as unique beings with their own needs. It is therefore also necessary to develop an appreciation of the moral, the mannerly, the physical, and the cultural, and an understanding of the inheritance, traditions, and language of the Welsh nation, and its place in, and relationship to the rest of the world. To achieve this, it is necessary to ensure that each child has equal opportunities across the curriculum. The children are offered a varied, balanced, and enriched curriculum, with real experiences of the highest possible quality. Teaching and learning techniques and resources of the highest possible quality are used, which encourage children to develop inquisitive and lively minds, the ability to question and to discuss sensibly, to solve problems, and to work independently. We strive to do this within an open, welcoming, tasteful, happy, family, and homely environment and atmosphere. This results in children who are inspired and so that each child achieves his/her full potential, the children must be educated to take an active part in this process. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of listening to what children have to say, and that everyone gives each child his/her deserved attention, and that each child is allowed to react sensibly and with personal reasoning to varying audiences. It is essential that each child and his/her ideas and produce be respected, by sharing their successes with others, by developing self-respect and confidence, and by setting an example of the highest possible quality. To achieve all this, it is necessary to prepare thoroughly, policies, whole school and class schemes, and teaching techniques, after consultation within and between the staff, governors, and LEA. - The function of the school is to nurture and encourage the development of every pupil as an individual and as a responsible member of society. As an individual, we aim to develop his/her physical, mental and moral growth and to provide the opportunity for that development to be as extensive as possible. The child is also a member of society and it is intended to prepare him/her to play the fullest part possible in that society. It is the objective of the School to prepare a curriculum that will enable the child to develop the elementary skills - talking, listening, reading, and writing and numeracy skills to have the opportunity to study and interpret the environment to nurture healthy and helpful social aspects to receive rich and varied experiences and the opportunity to express them. The curriculum incorporates aspects of mathematics and science, technology, humanities (history, geography, and religious education), and the expressive arts (art, drama, music, dance, and physical education). Language and its development is a medium that incorporates all the areas of study. Every School must present the National Curriculum as a statutory requirement. As in the majority of schools, there will be very little difference in the contents of the subjects taught - but it means that a great deal of attention will have to be given to recording pupil progress and attainment in the various subjects/ areas of study - through the teachers’ continuous assessment and through setting assessment tasks and determining a description of the level at the end of the Foundation Stage (at 7 years of age) and the end of KS2 (at 11 years of age). Our aim at Ysgol Amlwch is to try and ensure that the child by the time he/she reaches eleven years of age can speak Welsh and English fluently and can read and write both languages with mastery and understanding of numeracy is aware of the world around him/her and has had every opportunity to develop fully according to age, ability, and inclination.
