  5. Berkeley Carroll is a vibrant, independent, PreK through 12th-grade college prep school where students develop their critical, ethical, and global thinking in and out of the classroom. Walk through our halls, and you will see classes where teachers engage and challenge students. Intellectual curiosity is encouraged, with students investigating, performing, sharing insights and perspectives, asking questions, and solving real-world problems. After they graduate, our students go on to thrive at the world's most selective and admired colleges and universities. Centrally located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, our school attracts families from all parts of New York City and New Jersey and provides free bus service for students. A passion for learning is at the heart of Berkeley Carroll. Our school is a creative and intellectual community where devoted teachers to challenge and engage talented students. Our demanding curriculum and vibrant civic life prepare our diverse graduates for college success and the more significant endeavor—a life of critical, ethical, and global thinking. An emphasis on respect and caring for individuals makes our diverse, inclusive community an extraordinarily strong one. We are deeply committed to developing ethical and critical thinkers who are exceptionally prepared to lead and succeed in an increasingly complex and changing world. First, we know every one of you. We know your strengths, your interests, and your dreams. Second, you will have opportunities. At every step of your time here at BC, there will be opportunities in science and math. In the arts, in humanities, in athletics, you will surprise yourself with what you can do. And finally, you can have an impact and change our school forever. The impact that students have had on the school this year is immeasurable. For example, the Lower School's Changemakers worked with an animal rights group and taught the school about pet responsibility. The work of our Middle Schoolers led the city to plant six new trees on Lincoln Place. Right now, we have a senior who is studying how to put wind turbines on all of our buildings so they can generate some of our electrical power! The new construction at Lincoln Place was improved by the work of an Upper School student. We have shared the story and photos of the renovated Middle School library, the new STEAM space, the expanded and renovated science labs, and the new fourth floor's extension, which allowed us to add new classrooms and a dedicated Upper School library. Those new facilities have already increased opportunities for teaching and learning, and now, there is another aspect of the construction that has just been finished. In 2015 as we were developing the construction plan, several neighborhood groups encouraged us to consider adding solar panels to the roof. We thought it was a great idea but a challenging one to accomplish since we are located in a landmark district, and it is exceedingly difficult to change or add anything to our buildings. But we wanted to give it a try. An area of focus at Berkeley Carroll is creating an environment that is not only diverse but inclusive, so every member of the community feels respected, valued, and that they belong as an equal. This means approaching diversity and inclusion with a multi-pronged strategy encompassing academics, admissions, financial aid, student life, family support, faculty and staff hiring, and accessibility to the school. Integrating diversity and inclusion as cornerstones of a Berkeley Carroll education means incorporating them into the school's daily life, not merely discussing them at special events as a one-off topic. They should be a regular, familiar part of life at Berkeley Carroll for every community member. As an inclusive community, Berkeley Carroll honors the dignity of all people. In our culture and our program, we embrace and respect differences. These include age, ethnicity, family structure, gender, learning style, physical ability, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class. We believe in teaching and learning about these issues, even when the conversations are difficult. Our commitment to diversity is one expression of the mission of our school. We want to help students understand the complexity of a constantly changing world. The confidence and ability to engage respectfully with others is the signature of a Berkeley Carroll education.
