The University finds the source of its inspiration in Saint Ignatius of Loyola's experience and the centuries-long commitment of the Society of Jesus to academic excellence and service to the common good. The Jesuit Catholic character of John Carroll University is a single reality based on the integration of faith and culture. It represents a commitment to a church within the world, serving the human search for truth and value, justice, and solidarity. It also represents a reverence for the transcendent vision that Christ preached and lived as the final best expression of human fulfillment. This Jesuit Catholic character inspires and guides the intellectual, professional, and ethical labors that make John Carroll a university. Wireless internet access is available to all students on campus, as are the campus Fitness Center and swimming pool. It supports initiatives to improve K-12 education and encourage technology start-ups in northeastern Ohio. Cleveland has the most extensive city park system in the U.S. and offers picnicking, hiking, bike trails, horseback riding, winter sports, and more. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located between Cleveland and Akron, features a wide variety of natural, cultural, and historical resources. Cleveland is a three hours' drive from Niagara Falls and an easy half-day from Toronto. Chicago to the west and New York City to the east are both a day's drive. John Carroll University is a place of intellectual honesty, pluralism, and mutual respect. A Jesuit education encourages students to acquire a liberal, diverse and encompassing education. Excellence and mastery in their chosen field are balanced with extensive historical and cultural education. A Jesuit education stresses that each individual is essential and students must be given focused, caring, personal attention. Students are challenged to pursue wisdom, competence, psychological maturity, spiritual strength, ethical grounding, and social and global awareness. The hallmark of this person-centered reality of Jesuit education is that it must always lead to action. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge and abilities to serve the world to make a difference for others. In a world so desperately in need of life and hope, our students and graduates are challenged to be leaders in the service of all. JCU students are privileged to enjoy an outstanding academic curriculum, but adding a fantastic experience outside of the classroom experience makes it even better! With over 100 student organizations and additional programs and activities sponsored by numerous university offices, there is something of interest for every student. The John Carroll mission is to educate students for leadership and service in the world. In the words of Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., the goal of Jesuit Catholic education is to develop "men and women for and with others." The Center for Service and Social Action invites you to embrace this mission and to discover your gifts, talents, and leadership abilities through service to others. Our office develops service programs that build mutually beneficial relationships, create learning opportunities, encourage reflection and civic engagement, and nourish the spiritual life. Our programs include Service-Learning Courses, Weekly Service Activities, One-Time Service Projects and Events, and support for Social Justice Advocacy. These programs involve students directly with those most in need through collaboration with more than 75 community partners in the Cleveland area. View full university
      2. Welcome to Carroll University, home of the Pioneers and Wisconsin’s first, four-year institution of higher learning.Since 1846, students have selected Carroll as their preferred choice in preparation for lives of purpose, meaning and achievement. Pioneering is part of our heritage but it’s much more than a legacy. That foundational spirit is alive and well here.It grounds us and guides us toward transformation and growth that places top priority on the needs of our students. Beautifully preserved, historic buildings stand shoulder-to-shoulder with multimillion-dollar, state-of-the-art facilities. Our deep commitment to the educational breadth offered by a liberal arts tradition blends seamlessly with our role as a leader in the health sciences. We have always believed that preparing our students for what they will do goes hand-in-hand with discovering who they are meant to become. With that in mind, we encourage them to embrace opportunity, be open to new experiences, step outside their boundaries and explore. We focus on delivering the programs and support that allow them to do so successfully. Carroll is also distinguished by its culture, which values respect, integrity, inclusiveness and service to others.Consistently, our students tell us they feel at home here. We are a community that looks outward and asks how we can make a difference by leaving things better than we found them. This is underscored through the cross-cultural emphasis woven throughout our curriculum and service opportunities that begin day one for first-year students. It’s a welcoming environment that fosters learning both in and out of the classroom while nurturing personal growth. Pioneers come from all walks of life and that diversity adds richness and depth to the Carroll experience. They are alike in their commitment to excellence and innovation, their resourceful and creative natures, and their honest desire to support one another for the greater good.Pioneers are passionate about making their mark on the world. That journey is unique to each and every one of our students....and it begins at Carroll. 3. Living and learning at Carroll College is about more than merely earning a degree. It is about more than preparing for a career. It is about whom you become and the lives you touch along the way. Here, we engage with one another in ways you do not see other places. We inspire one another. We seek out ways to improve life and live all over the world. It may be an anthrozoology student having a breakthrough while training a dog on campus. Environmental science students share their future dreams while researching a mountain stream—a couple of friends kayaking the Missouri River together. Alternatively, watching our Fighting Saints, athletic teams excel on the field or court. At Carroll, it is about the moments we share. Because more than any knowledge gained, it is the moments here that make us who we are in life—now and into the future. Our community lives its faith every day through a Catholic liberal arts tradition of service and social justice. Every week you will find hundreds of students coming together for Sunday Mass. Moreover, our dozens of service events, Campus Ministry programs, spiritual retreats, and fundraisers personify a community dedicated to developing our spirit and our minds and contributing to the greater good. There is a shared spirit of togetherness at Carroll that is truly exceptional. We believe in each other, challenge each other, inspire and support each other every day. We believe in being curious and using that curiosity to push the boundaries of what is possible. We have heart, and you will feel it the moment you step on campus. At the laying of the cornerstone of what he then called "Capitol Hill College," Bishop John Carroll declared, "Knowledge and virtue are the armor with which Capitol Hill College shall strive to equip its students." With these words, Bishop Carroll dedicated the site where St. Charles Hall would soon stand: the centerpiece of the college he visioned and built, which would one day bear his name. From its inception, Carroll College has aspired to produce students with "strong minds, great hearts, true faith, and ready hands" (Carroll College 1930 yearbook). For over one hundred years, it has challenged its students to undertake rigorous academic studies informed by the Catholic faith and service to the local community and beyond. Our academic programs are recognized as being among the very best. It is because we provide an experience that transcends classrooms and labs, in which the pursuit of knowledge goes hand-in-hand with service and engaging the world around us. The moments our students and faculty share in the classrooms, labs, and in the field are powerful ones. Together, they pursue knowledge with curiosity and conviction. With creativity and positivity. Because that is what it takes if you want to touch lives and bring positive change to the world indeed. We do. Moreover, in the process, our students experience the moments that empower them to realize their vision of the life they want to lead. The academic experience at Carroll features small class sizes, labs, and facilities that foster state-of-the-art experiential learning and professors who challenge students as much as they support them. However, beyond that, ours is a Catholic liberal arts setting that prepares students in a distinctive way for their chosen profession, lifelong learning in an ever-changing world, and success in everything they do. We believe in the quality of our experience, and we know ours is a unique community. However, we are not alone. Carroll is consistently recognized at the national level for excellence in academic programs, athletics, value, and our alumni's accomplishments. Moreover, while no ranking will ever replace our people's moments, it is nice knowing that the world has taken notice. Founded in 1909 in Helena, Montana, by the Catholic Diocese of Helena, Carroll offers an outstanding and affordable education that positions students aggressively for successful job placement and admission to graduate, law, and medical schools. Among the many benefits, Carroll students enjoy cutting-edge undergraduate research and professional internship opportunities in Montana's capital city and generous merit scholarships. In 1883, Helena, John Baptist Brondel, proposed a Catholic college in Montana to help produce future priests for the soon-to-be Diocese of Helena. Unfortunately, he died before his plans could be realized. Pope Pius X was selected as Brondel's successor, a young priest from Dubuque, Iowa: John Patrick Carroll. Before his appointment, Carroll was the president of St. Joseph's College in Dubuque (now known as Loras College). He had been appointed president there just five years after joining the faculty. Upon his arrival in Montana, the newly appointed Bishop articulated three goals: to establish a Catholic school system, to build a cathedral (pictured below), and to carry forward Bishop Brondel's vision of the first Catholic college in Montana. According to Carroll College historian Dr. Robert Swartout, "Carroll's most telling qualities were his deep and unwavering commitment to his faith, his intellectual breadth, his strong administrative talents (including his ability to stay focused on the primary task at hand), and his passion for Catholic education". 4. Berkeley Carroll is a vibrant, independent, PreK through 12th-grade college prep school where students develop their critical, ethical, and global thinking in and out of the classroom. Walk through our halls, and you will see classes where teachers engage and challenge students. Intellectual curiosity is encouraged, with students investigating, performing, sharing insights and perspectives, asking questions, and solving real-world problems. After they graduate, our students go on to thrive at the world's most selective and admired colleges and universities. Centrally located in Park Slope, Brooklyn, our school attracts families from all parts of New York City and New Jersey and provides free bus service for students. A passion for learning is at the heart of Berkeley Carroll. Our school is a creative and intellectual community where devoted teachers to challenge and engage talented students. Our demanding curriculum and vibrant civic life prepare our diverse graduates for college success and the more significant endeavor—a life of critical, ethical, and global thinking. An emphasis on respect and caring for individuals makes our diverse, inclusive community an extraordinarily strong one. We are deeply committed to developing ethical and critical thinkers who are exceptionally prepared to lead and succeed in an increasingly complex and changing world. First, we know every one of you. We know your strengths, your interests, and your dreams. Second, you will have opportunities. At every step of your time here at BC, there will be opportunities in science and math. In the arts, in humanities, in athletics, you will surprise yourself with what you can do. And finally, you can have an impact and change our school forever. The impact that students have had on the school this year is immeasurable. For example, the Lower School's Changemakers worked with an animal rights group and taught the school about pet responsibility. The work of our Middle Schoolers led the city to plant six new trees on Lincoln Place. Right now, we have a senior who is studying how to put wind turbines on all of our buildings so they can generate some of our electrical power! The new construction at Lincoln Place was improved by the work of an Upper School student. We have shared the story and photos of the renovated Middle School library, the new STEAM space, the expanded and renovated science labs, and the new fourth floor's extension, which allowed us to add new classrooms and a dedicated Upper School library. Those new facilities have already increased opportunities for teaching and learning, and now, there is another aspect of the construction that has just been finished. In 2015 as we were developing the construction plan, several neighborhood groups encouraged us to consider adding solar panels to the roof. We thought it was a great idea but a challenging one to accomplish since we are located in a landmark district, and it is exceedingly difficult to change or add anything to our buildings. But we wanted to give it a try. An area of focus at Berkeley Carroll is creating an environment that is not only diverse but inclusive, so every member of the community feels respected, valued, and that they belong as an equal. This means approaching diversity and inclusion with a multi-pronged strategy encompassing academics, admissions, financial aid, student life, family support, faculty and staff hiring, and accessibility to the school. Integrating diversity and inclusion as cornerstones of a Berkeley Carroll education means incorporating them into the school's daily life, not merely discussing them at special events as a one-off topic. They should be a regular, familiar part of life at Berkeley Carroll for every community member. As an inclusive community, Berkeley Carroll honors the dignity of all people. In our culture and our program, we embrace and respect differences. These include age, ethnicity, family structure, gender, learning style, physical ability, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic class. We believe in teaching and learning about these issues, even when the conversations are difficult. Our commitment to diversity is one expression of the mission of our school. We want to help students understand the complexity of a constantly changing world. The confidence and ability to engage respectfully with others is the signature of a Berkeley Carroll education. It’s a welcoming environment that fosters learning both in and out of the classroom while nurturing personal growth. Pioneers come from all walks of life and that diversity adds richness and depth to the Carroll experience. 9.
