At Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn we aim to provide a happy, caring, and secure environment in which each child will develop their skills and talents to the full. However, as a staff has a full-time teaching commitment, you will appreciate that it is difficult for teachers to see parents during the day. Nevertheless, the staff is available most days after school but we would ask that you make every effort to make prior arrangements to see them. The Headteacher will whenever possible, attempt to meet parents to discuss any concerns. The curriculum is all planned activities that the school organizes to promote learning, personal growth, and development. It includes the formal requirements, the extracurricular activities we organize to enrich the experience of the children, and the key skills that underpin learning throughout the school. In Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn we aim to teach children how to grow into, responsible people, who can work and cooperate so that they can achieve their true potential. Ysgol Eifionydd and present this handbook that provides useful information about the school. The school was established in 1894 and has a long tradition as a happy and successful establishment. Starting at a new secondary school is a big step for a child and the purpose of this booklet is to answer some of the questions that you may have. The school provides education for pupils between 11 and 16 years old and serves the towns of Porthmadog, Cricieth, and the rural villages of the area. Our vision is to ensure bilingual pupils that can confidently achieve the highest possible standards through continuous effort, co-operation, and respect for others. Our message to our pupils is outstanding! The school prides itself on its good relationship with parents. An essential element in the school’s underlying philosophy is that no pupil can succeed fully without there being complete understanding and co-operation between school and home. An annual calendar of events is given to parents and additional information is provided for special events. Parents who wish to see the information concerning their children are welcome to do so. Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen reflects the natural Welsh environment of the local community, but with an emphasis on developing the bilingualism of our pupils. At present, there are some 400 pupils in the school, mainly from Bethesda and the surrounding villages which make up Dyffryn Ogwen. We have 25 teachers and 12 support staff. We aim to support pupils in achieving their potential across a range of academic and vocational subjects, as well as focusing on their literacy and numeracy development. Most subjects use Information Technology, and we have invested substantially in this area. We are proud of the fact that all our students leave Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen with qualifications in these important skills. The school has a very good reputation within the community for its caring and friendly atmosphere and its pursuit of high standards. The school has worked hard on its links with the local community and we take pride in our partnership with parents/guardians. The school’s 4-year building program has now been completed. This has resulted in a new Administration and Sixth Form block a fully refurbished Science block including new laboratories and teaching rooms fully refurbished and new teaching rooms in the old 1970 block new Music rooms and Drama studio together with Canolfan Amanwy, a specialist teaching center for pupils with multiple learning difficulties. The upgrading of the Art, Design, and Technology block together with improvements to the Physical Education department has also been completed. The school is a thriving, successful mixed bilingual comprehensive of some 1600 pupils based on a large campus. There is a sixth form of some 290 pupils. The school is located in the small town of Ammanford at the foot of the Black Mountains. Pupils attending the school come from a large catchment area which is a mixture of rural and industrial. The school reflects and enhances the bilingual nature of the area. The school has excellent sports facilities, including a sports hall, a swimming pool, a new astroturf for Hockey and Football, together with new Tennis courts. There is also a fine tradition of sporting achievements and other extra-curricular activities in the school. Many boys and girls represent their county and country in several fields. Ysgol Dolbadarn. We would like to emphasize from the outset that education is a partnership between ourselves and the home. It contains information important to the day-to-day management of the school and to assist your child in settling down quickly. Ysgol Dolbadarn is a primary school that caters to pupils from 3-11 years of age. Pupils are admitted part-time in the September following their third birthday and full-time in the September following their fourth birthday. The building dates back to 1938, but at that time older pupils also attended the school. Over the years the two-floor building has been adapted for its present use and it is a large building with sizeable classrooms. In October 2006 a new Computer Suite was opened and this was made possible with the generous support of the local community and the Parents & Friends Association. At eleven years of age pupils usually transfer to Ysgol Brynrefail which is in Llanrug. A special center for children with speech and language difficulties is housed in the school and open each morning. The center is run directly by the Education Authority, but pupils and staff integrate socially. The school was inspected by Estyn in November 2006. The school received a most complimentary Report and a copy of the Summary For Parents and/or the full Report can be obtained from the school. Ysgol Dolbadarn is a natural Welsh school and both staff and pupils work hard to maintain the school’s Welsh ethos and environment. Those of you whose children encounter a bilingual situation for the first time should not feel threatened nor feel that you do not belong. At Ysgol Dinas Brân we aim to ensure that all our children succeed in the happy, caring, and secure environment we offer. We are very proud of the standards we achieve at the school our last Estyn report (2012) described us as “providing an outstanding range of learning experiences” and having a “very high level of care and support for pupils”. In recent years exam results have placed us amongst the highest achieving schools across Wales our GCSE results were the best we have ever achieved currently placing us in band one. We are delighted with this but are aiming to improve further. We are a popular, forward-thinking community school with around a thousand students (admitting 200 in year 7) and a Sixth Form of 150. We are also a bilingual school with around 10% of students studying through the medium of Welsh. Our motto is “Success Through Effort” and we firmly believe that we should aim for all students to achieve their very best academically through the highest possible standards of teaching and also in extracurricular life, whether through sporting, musical, dramatic pursuits or the many and varied visits and activities available at the school. Ysgol Derwenfa serves a rural area and is in the county of Flintshire for administrative purposes. At the age of 11, the children are transferred to Ysgol Castell Alun, Hope or Ysgol Alun, Mold but parents may opt for St. Richard Gwyn School, Flint, for religious reasons, or they may choose Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold, for Welsh linguistic reasons. The school is a semi-open plan, co-educational day school, which was opened in 1979, after the old County Primary and Church Schools which had served the community for nearly a century, closed. The school day begins with an act of corporate worship and a period each week is devoted to Religious Education but arrangements can be made for exemption from Religious Instruction and attendance at Assemblies where other arrangements will be made for the pupils. Parents who have strong religious convictions who prefer their children not to participate in Christmas Concerts, Christmas Parties, sponsorships, taking raffle tickets home for parents to sell should contact the headteacher. In the past, all the Infant classes were single age groups. Three years ago we established an Early Years Unit comprising of Nursery and Reception pupils. This year we will continue with this arrangement but owing to pupil numbers the Unit will include a single nursery class as well as a mixed-age Reception / Year 1 class (comprising of the younger Year 1 children). The other class will be a year 1/2 mixed class (comprising of the older Year 1 children). The Junior classes are a mixed year 3 / 4 and mixed year 5 / 6 and one single age Year, 4 class. The mixed-age classes in K.S 2 are determined by the ability of the pupils to take into consideration N.C. levels and test results and the need to keep all classes under 30. Attention is given to the core subjects on an individual or group tuition basis. The foundation subjects are either integrated into the curriculum through the study of different topics or as separate subjects when the need arises, taking into consideration the age, stage of development of the pupils, and the attainment targets laid down in the National Curriculum. Children experiencing learning difficulties are supported by the school's Additional Learning Needs teacher twice a week. If the difficulties are more serious, the child/children will be referred to the Educational Psychologist so that a statement can be compiled. Additional Needs Team Meetings are convened twice a year during which the difficulties/progress of the pupils on the Additional Needs register is discussed and minutes kept. Representatives from outside agencies i.e. educational psychologist, school nursing sister, high school, etc. are also invited to the meetings. Where the learning difficulties are more serious, arrangements are made for a member of the learning Inclusion Team to come to school to work on a one-to-one basis with the particular pupil/s. During open evenings parents are informed of their pupil’s progress. As part of the Special Needs Code of Practice, parents are kept informed either by the class teacher, Additional Needs Coordinator, or Headteacher of the different stages and implications of the Code of Practice. Although English is the medium of instruction and the normal vehicle of communication, yet following the National Curriculum, Welsh is taught as a foundation subject. All class teachers teach Welsh as a Second language to their class. The School was built in 1939 with further additions in 1961, 1967, and 2003. There are 11 classrooms and a music room. We are also fortunate in having a well equipped Hall which acts as a gymnasium and a canteen. The playgroup is also situated in the DPLA building next to the school, which can only be described as a bonus to both the school and playgroup. There is also an Acer School Club in the DPLA building. The School grounds are large and tree-lined. Most of the area is grass covered with hard surface areas for the infants. There is also a netball court, nature reserve, wooden play area, a large school garden, and allotment. Ysgol Deganwy is a primary school in Deganwy, a village situated on the mouth of the beautiful Conwy estuary, in the borough of Conwy, North Wales.
