  1. The history of Wroclaw Medical University dates back to 1811 when the Prussian king Frederik Wilhelm II ordered to relocate the Viadrina University in Frankfurt to Wroclaw. Its new rector, professor, and doctor Karl August Wilhelm Bereds was also named the first Dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Wroclaw. The faculty had five cathedrals: anatomy, physiology, internal medicine, obstetrics, and surgery. Thanks to the quality of didactics and its renowned professors, the Medical Faculty of The University Of Wroclaw quickly established itself as a renowned European medical school. The Faculty of Medicine is the oldest and the largest faculty of Wroclaw Medical University. It was established on November 14, 1945, as one of six faculties of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University. The opening lecture was given by Ludwik Hirszfeld. The scientific staff consisted mainly of professors from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. The Wroclaw Medical University was established in 1950, consisting of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy. Since then, 16,068 medical doctors and 4,715 dentists have graduated. On February 12, 1958, the first open-heart surgery in Poland was carried out by prof. Wiktor Bross at the Faculty of Medicine, who also on March 31, 1966, performed the first kidney transplant from a living donor. These achievements were significant in European medicine. A great number of prominent scientists researched at the Faculty of Medicine, including the following professors: Ludwik Hirszfeld, Zygmunt Albert, Edward Szczeklik, Witold Orłowski, Stefan Ślopek, Hugon, and Zofia Kowarzyk. Our strengths consist of dynamic growth, openness to change, and a friendly attitude towards students. The traditions of this Faculty, which recently has celebrated its 70th anniversary, combined with the present world-class research projects inspire its continuous growth, also in the English Division studies. The Dentistry Unit was established at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University in Wroclaw on April 13, 1947. In 1950, the school of dentistry became a part of the Wroclaw Medical University. The school consisted of four departments. In 1970–1980, academic dentistry in Wroclaw functioned as the Institute of Dentistry. In December 1981, the school of dentistry was reunited with the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Dentistry was established on November 16, 2000. Prominent Polish scientists conducted research in dentistry in Wrocław, including the following professors: Noemi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa, Tadeusz Owiński, Adam Masztalerz, Stanisław Potoczek, Bogumił Płonka, Tadeusz Pawela, Ignacy Pietrzycki and many others. In 2003–2006, the scientific and training facilities were moved to a new building. The Faculty regained the right to issue degrees in dental medicine (in the last three years the Faculty has been granted 26 degrees). The Faculty, as one of five in Poland, has received the longest possible accreditation from the State Accreditation Committee. Today, it is one of three independent faculties of dentistry in Poland. Our faculty is traditionally the most demanding division of the Wroclaw Medical University – in the last recruitment 30 candidates applied for one spot. Thanks to the high quality of lectures and well-equipped surgeries, all of our students are highly competitive on the job market.

    University of Wroclaw

The University of Wrocław has a rich history of more than three centuries. Founded by Leopold I Habsburg the university evolved from a modest school run by Jesuits into one of the biggest academic institutions in Poland. At the beginning of the 19th century, the university had five Faculties: philosophy, catholic theology, evangelical theology, law, and medicine. Later it was expanded by numerous sections, laboratories, and a natural museum, which exists until today. After the Second World War a group of Polish professors, formerly from Lviv, started teaching and research activities at the University of Wrocław. Initially, they created the Faculties of law and administration, arts, natural sciences, agriculture, veterinary, medicine, mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Some of these Faculties were soon transformed into other universities.Since the beginning of the 20th century, the University of Wrocław produced 9 Nobel Prize winners, such as Theodor Mommsen, Philipp Lenard, Eduard Buchner, Paul Ehrlich, Fritz Haber, Friedrich Bergius, Erwin Schrödinger, Otto Stern and Max Born. Today, the first and foremost focus of The University of Wrocław is scientific research. Our scholars have numerous links with their fellow researchers from other higher education institutions in Poland and throughout the world. The success of our researchers has been recently recognized by Polish authorities, who significantly increased funding for both equipment and research at our University by 80% compared to previous years. Like in most countries, in Poland the national quality assessment system is part of a national strategy for improving the quality of education. Every four years the Ministry of Education evaluates faculties of all Polish universities. Last year 9 out of 10 of our Faculties were qualified in the highest category and one was the second highest. The Academic Incubator of Entrepreneurship is a new unit of the University of Wrocław designed to aid students in starting their businesses by providing free entrepreneurial advice, organizing conferences, seminars, subsidizing selected investments, and offering office space. The objective of the Technology Park is to create conditions for the use of the scientific and industrial potential of Wrocław and the region and to stimulate the advanced technologies industry. The University of Wrocław is proud to be one of its shareholders. Today the University of Wrocław is the largest in the region and teaches over 26,000 students and around 1300 doctoral students at 10 Faculties. 9000 students graduate from the University every year. The University of Wrocław offers degrees at the bachelor, master's, and doctoral levels. 4. Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw is a state university. It educates students on full-time studies and part-time studies in seven directions in four faculties. Lectures, classes, seminars, and discussion sessions illustrated with visits to the museum collections and important places (monuments, artistic institutions), reproductions, slides, and films as well as participation in artistic events and commenting on them - these are the major forms of education provided by our Institute for students from their first to the fifth year. The basic course of the history of art covers subsequent cultures and civilizations, from the Paleolithic phase to the latest phenomena pervading artistic culture. The history of philosophy makes students acquainted with traditional philosophical problems and disciplines (from the Greeks to the 20th-century philosophy). Theory and history of culture present a broader anthropological context and relations between art and major aesthetic ideas as well as development tendencies in various epochs. The Library and the Information and Documentation Centre are the basis for a uniform school library and information system. They fulfill the function of a generally accessible library and a center for artistic and scientific information. And they form a link in the national library network and academic information exchange. The library collections include about 14 thousand books, 1,000 magazine volumes, and 3,700 catalogs from Polish and foreign exhibitions. Some valuable, not easily available, and unique items can be found among them. The library makes its collections of books and magazines available all year round. Six hundred readers a month use the library services. The reading room provides specialist artistic magazines national and foreign, such as Art in America, Artnews, Ceramics, Design, Domus, Form, Graphics, Kunstforum, or Neues Glass among others. The information and documentation center collects, documents, and makes available school bibliographical materials and propagates information about the lives and artistic achievements of its educators, students, and graduates (bound publications, exhibition catalogs, continual publications, publications from magazines, etc.). It develops and promotes information signaling artistic events in Poland and worldwide for the school and artistic circles in Lower Silesia. The center co-operates with prominent national museums and galleries by exchanging information and publications dealing with the more important artistic events. The center produces graphic reproductions in the scope referred to above, for the library as well as about materials requested by educators, students, and the public. The basic form of instruction are classes offered for graduates interested in the problems of contemporary plastic arts and the development of their artistic predisposition. The studies last two years (four semesters). If the student has changed the major studio it is possible either to come back to the former one or to prepare the work in the studio chosen during the third semester. The classes on painting and drawing are continued. Also, theoretical lectures are still provided and are concluded with a test. The fourth semester closes with a review of conclusive major works and painting and drawing pieces. This open review is performed by an examination board. The works are appraised by the board constituted by all educators responsible for the major classes, the manager of the painting and drawing studio, representatives of the academy management, and the manager of the Postgraduate College. Based on a secret vote, the board decides on the marks. Graduates from the College receive certificates of completing the Postgraduate College. Those who have graduated from the College and are interested in continuing classes in the major studios may enroll in a two-year major specialization, available also for the AFA graduates wishing to acquire an additional specialization. In the academic year 2001/2002, as a result of an agreement reached between the Chancellors of AFA, AM (Musical Academy) and PWST (State High Theatrical School) out-of-town branches, the Postgraduate Col-lege opened a "Study of Performance Space". Classes, planned for two semesters, are organized by educators from the three schools mentioned above and by lecturers invited from other artistic centers and institutions. Graduates from the AFA (plastic arts studies) may receive certificates of completing the above educational program.

  14. View full university
