In 1911 Bishop Joseph Schrembs, the first Bishop of Toledo, invited the Sisters of Mercy to open three hospitals in Toledo's Diocese. The hospital in Toledo, Ohio, opened in 1918. The Sisters of Mercy understood the importance of hospital care and the need for well-prepared nurses. The Sisters of Mercy enrolled their first class of ten student nurses between June and December of 1918 just as the Spanish Influenza struck the Toledo community. The nursing program provided a vehicle through which the educational mission of the Sisters of Mercy was promoted. If we discover that an act of bullying or intimidation has taken place, we act immediately to stop any further occurrences of such behavior. While it is very difficult to eradicate bullying, we do everything in our power to ensure that all children attend school free from fear. In reported cases, we will adopt a restorative approach to reconciling the bullying incident and assign a member of staff to mentor the pupils involved.
