  9. Tokyo Dental College marked its 120th anniversary in 2010. Its predecessor, Takayama Dental School, was founded in 1890 as the first dental education institution in Japan. Since then, the college has continued to contribute to the development of dental medicine and the nation's oral health for over a century. We can now boast a long record of furnishing our students with the knowledge and skills they need to provide the best that modern dental medicine has to offer, thus earning our patients' trust. Recent years have seen remarkable progress in the field of medicine and dental medicine. And nowhere more so than in the field of regenerative medicine, which promises significant changes in what we can expect from medicine in the future. We are now faced with a rapidly aging population. It will be the dental professional's duty to help this group retain oral health and function, thus ensuring that the patient's overall health will also be maintained. This means that the dentist will need to diagnose and treat dental problems while also identifying their potential effect on overall systemic health. Besides, the globalization of society as a whole means we must foster young dentists capable of playing an active role on the international stage. As a part of this project, we have initiated an Elective Study Program to equip our alumni with a high level of education they will need to provide the medical care expected from them. We aim to remain a dental school with a heart, never forgetting our educational philosophy based on our foundation motto: "Character building is the first step in becoming a dentist." Tokyo Dental College is proud of its tradition and status as the oldest dental education institute in Japan. On this, our 120th anniversary, our main campus will move to Suidobashi in Tokyo, making history as we move forward into the coming century. We are firm in our resolution to contribute to the oral health of the community. We will do so by promoting dental medicine's continuous development through cooperation with other medical colleges and medical institutions. Thus, together with our other two facilities in Chiba and Ichikawa, we will provide cutting-edge medical care to all our patients. Tokyo Dental College has been selected as the first single-department college by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) to address the following two programs. These support programs are called GP (Good Practice). To foster high-level dental skills and the dentists themselves as a fully-rounded individual, we have offered an IT environment for each step of the curriculum to promote high-quality dental education since 1998. Specifically, we have instituted consistent evaluation for each student throughout the six years of their course, using an original database to manage their entire examination history during that period. We have named this structured evaluation system "Global Evaluation."
  10. The Nippon Dental University is the only dental university that has two schools of dentistry. Comprising two campuses, one in Tokyo and the other in Niigata, it has two schools of dentistry, three affiliated hospitals, two junior colleges, and a museum. At present, there are about 2,000 students, 1,000 teaching staff, and over 19,800 graduates. The Nippon Dental University, Japan's first dental university, was founded by Ichigoro Nakahara in 1907 under the Japanese Dental Law, which introduced regulations for the accreditation of both public and private dental schools. Dentistry was in its infancy at the time, and the purpose of establishing this school was "to foster excellence in dentists as regards their character as well as their scholastic achievements and technique." The school trained students on the medical aspects of the teeth, jaw, and oral cavity and produced dentists with the necessary academic and technical knowledge and an appropriate ethical attitude. The Nippon Dental University is a private school dedicated to continuing the founder's spirit of "independence," In 2006, it celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation. These one hundred years of continuing tradition and history are why the school is regarded as "the fountainhead of dentistry" in Japan. Nippon Dental University has changed the school and faculty names to include the words "life dentistry." Dentistry involves the study of life in general, and dental treatment involves medical treatment relating to life. For this reason, the word "life" was added to the school and faculty names. In recent years, universities have been required to have the quality of their education evaluated and accredited every seven years and to make the results of that assessment public. At the core of the assessment is the university's mission. Consequently, the university's mission, which had previously received little notice, has suddenly become the focus of attention. In 1906 the Japanese Dental Law was established, which introduced regulations on both public and private dental schools' accreditation. But, as it turned out, the number of people who took the exam in Tokyo that year to become certified dentists numbered no more than 187. Dr. Ichigoro Nakahara, a highly respected private practitioner, repeatedly urged the central government to establish public (i.e., national) dental schools. But since dentistry was considered to have little relevance to the national goals of building a robust industrial base and a mighty army, Dr. Nakahara's entreaties fell on deaf ears. In short, for the government, dental care was not regarded as a priority. In the school's prospectus at the time of its founding, the following was written: "Working together, our goal is to assist private practitioners during the day, and in the evening to teach dentistry to those who have daytime jobs: first, by supplementing the deficiencies of the educational system second, by lightening the burden borne by private practitioners who act as our mentors. This is the rationale behind our plan to establish a school devoted to the teaching of dentistry.… One goal is to introduce dentists into society who are versed in both the theoretical and practical aspects of dentistry; another is to produce dentists of high moral character." In other words, the school's mission was to produce skilled and knowledgeable dentists of high moral character. Thus, without relying on others or calling for outside assistance, Dr. Nakahara one-handedly founded a private school and steadfastly maintained its independence. Although he was modest about his achievements, Dr. Nakahara deserves praise for his unswerving lifelong devotion to private education. This spirit has been maintained down the decades, and Nippon Dental University still operates on the principles of, and a deep belief in, independence and self-reliance. Throughout the 100 years since its founding, Nippon Dental University has never wavered from its stance of self-reliance and self-responsibility, and that, in truth, is what constitutes the school's true spirit and mission.
  11. Established in 1911, Osaka Dental University has a long history of education in the field of dentistry. The year 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of our institution. In response to new trends in dental education, Osaka Dental University will change. More opportunities will be provided to potential students. Further improvements will be made in student education and faculty development. Greater emphasis will be placed on nurturing a rich sense of humanity, so crucial for medical practitioners. With these changes, we will continue our endeavors in providing oral health care specialists to the community. By the time of graduation, students are expected to have acquired the specialized knowledge and techniques of dentistry and dental medicine. They will also have been encouraged to cultivate a caring attitude, maintain a strong sense of responsibility toward the path they have chosen, acquire a philanthropic social outlook and spirit of dedication, and strive to work for the common good. Five Basic Goals: Improve branding to attract students. Improve scholastic performance. Improve teaching. Focus on cultivating a caring attitude. Focus on faculty development. Three Additional Goals: Expand student abilities to conduct the international exchange. Boost graduate school performance. Improve research capabilities. Our educational policy follows the general educational objectives and policies prescribed in Japan's Fundamental Low of Education. Our objective is to produce dental practitioners who are also well-balanced individuals capable of applying everything they learn at the university. To achieve this, we focus on academic scholarship relating to dentistry that involves in-depth research and teaching of theory and techniques in specialist fields and provides students with the knowledge, skills, and moral principles that a dentist needs in the real world. Accordingly, students of the university must have the aptitude and potential to be a dentist and study in line with this educational policy. The aptitudes needed to be a dentist are summarized in the three items below. The intellectual and scholastic ability needed to understand dentistrydefineheory and techniques and the technical aptitude to put them into practice. A sense of responsibility as a dentist, with a dentist's outlook on society, a broad worldview, attitude, will, and other facets of the character. The stamina and energy to do the physical work required of the dentist. To be a dentist, one cannot have one aptitude but lack another. All three aptitudes listed above are essential. The essential qualities (knowledge, clinical skills, communication, and attitude) necessary to become a dental practitioner are acquired. Dental medicine is covered through 6 years of lectures ranging from basic science to clinical studies. Also featured are integrated lectures that provide a more in-depth understanding. The new curriculum provides lectures methodically arranged for students to attain a comprehensive understanding of dental medicine. There are also integrated lectures conducted each year that laterally combine the different areas studied in daily courses. Thus, the curriculum enables students to effectively acquire a deeper understanding of the knowledge and obtain skills within the limited 6-year time frame. Since the lectures are labeled and ordered methodically, students can quickly figure out what they are studying (or what they are missing) in the general context. This eventually leads to the encouragement of self-study. As the first step in becoming a dentist, the mentality necessary as a health care provider is taught through fieldwork. Upon entering university, students conduct fieldwork at our university hospital. Before starting studies on dentistry, students observe the treatment of the patients at the university hospital. This is an opportunity for them to enhance their vocation as a future dentist and be prepared for the oncoming curriculum studies. Though the students yet do not have any specialized knowledge background, they attempt communication with the patients and their families. It is a way for the freshmen to realize the patients' fear and anxiety and think of ways to provide relief. The school supports the students in maintaining their concentration and motivation until test day. Information concerning the trends of the examination is analyzed and incorporated into the courses for preparation. Students aim for the national board examination standards studying in different classes depending on their progress. They are quizzed each morning, and full-scale simulation tests are conducted regularly. This helps the students to maintain their concentration during the long haul. There also is support from faculty through special lectures and private consultation sessions.
  12. The term "modern democracy" is included in the founding principles of this University. Therefore, strength, persistence, and cooperation become essential competencies. Societal needs and demands now require the "globalization of Universities." This means that we must increase international competitiveness, build a foundation for enhanced international relations between countries, and develop human resources to play a leading part globally. To do this, people must enrich their understandings of the various cultures upon which languages, customs, and values are based. As part of the need for such adaptation, we at MDU are actively recruiting international students to provide an environment in which Japanese and international students can cooperate and work together in their studies. The newly established Center for Global Human Resource Development Education is to become a hub for clinical practice, short-term exchanges, and research exchange programs with overseas Universities and medical institutions from all over the world. Additionally, the city of Shiojiri established a comprehensive cooperation agreement last year. Through cooperation and strengthened relationships between the arts, industry, medicine, education, and academia, the University holds a vital role in contributing to globalization and our regional and local communities. As a part of this agreement, students of MDU will have plenty of opportunities to contribute towards our goal to improve community health and the quality of life through volunteer activities and community events. Visitors to our campus will immediately recognize the beautiful nature in which we are surrounded. Even in the summer, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of frost-tipped mountains and enjoy the gentle breeze that blows the snow off of the peak of Mt. Hotaka. As the seasons change, you can enjoy the various flowers that bloom in harmony with the progress of time. In combination with the most advanced equipment and facilities, we are proud to say that we truly believe this makes MDU one of the world's best environments for your studies. MDU is very proud of the tools we offer to our students to enhance their learning experience. Student lounges and private study rooms are available at any time of the day. Several courses can be reviewed through e-learning materials. Students can now use the most advanced digital microscopes, and technical guidance given by professors in practical lectures are now provided through individual display monitors provided to each student. All rooms at the student dorms are single rooms fully furnished to support and satisfy their every need. Housekeeping services are also provided so students can place their undivided attention on their studies. There are a cafeteria and a French restaurant, and a Chinese restaurant on campus, providing our students and visitors with various healthy diet options. Students of every cohort complete weekly tests so that their instructors can assess their level of understanding. Lessons and lectures are then designed and adapted to match each students' level of progress. Only four students per instructor at MDU allow our students to enjoy personalized educational support and guidance. Students, guardians, and teachers regularly meet every year to check up on progress and address any issues.

In 2014, we celebrated the centennial of the university's founding to further improve and develop our educational, research, and clinical activities as a university of oral medicine. More value may be placed on just producing professional practitioners in today's medical and dentistry educational systems. However, here at Kyushu Dental University, we make changes to meet the demands of our times because we are determined to train our students to be dental care practitioners who are truly professional and possess a sense of humanity. We also engage in cooperation with other universities. In 2009, we started an integrated graduate studies program for dentistry and engineering with the Kyushu Institute of Technology. We are working to develop a research environment that allows for cooperation with other fields. As a part of this effort, Kyushu Dental University, in cooperation with other three universities in the Kitakyushu region, launched a project in 2012 that aims to develop future professionals with expertise and skills that meet regional demands. The project receives grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. Kyushu Dental University is committed to following the missions stated here. These missions explain the kind of professional training, social contributions, and research we aspire to achieve. To train dental care practitioners who possess a high level of professionalism and expertise To fulfill a vital role in community health care To promote research that supports dental medicine Kyushu Dental University provides students with a high-quality liberal arts education, and professional education and trains accomplished individuals who practice patient-centered health care. To accomplish our mission, we set the following goals for the education and research we provide. We educate students to be creative health care practitioners who are flexible and can independently solve problems. We educate students to be health care practitioners who can contribute to society through oral health care. We reinforce our function as a core medical institution for advanced dental and oral medical care by training students to be dental care practitioners with a high level of expertise. We promote research that supports dental medicine and pursue research in cooperation with local and regional communities. We step up efforts to educate students as individuals who can contribute to international society and accept more exchange students to reinforce cooperation with educational and research institutions for dentistry in the Asia- Pacific region.

FDC is devoted to creating a more comprehensive educational system by integrating Dentistry with Medicine, Life Sciences, and Welfare to meet the times' needs. FDC aims to foster competent dentists with virtues and international perspectives, contribute towards social welfare and advance Dental Medicine. To achieve our goals, we offer a 6-year curriculum that includes ethics, specialized subjects, and clinical training. We also offer various club activities, international exchanges, and support systems to help them achieve their goals. Clinical training includes dentistry and medicine, such as Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pain Clinic, Otorhinolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Psychosomatic Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, and Orthopedics. Today, in our super-aging society, dentists are required to know about medicine to meet society's needs. For better cooperation between dentists and medical doctors, we are fostering dentists with such knowledge. Fukuoka Dental College has a range of facilities that support students' learning experience on campus. Many of the facilities, such as grounds, gymnasium, school cafeteria, and the library through the interlibrary loan system, are also available to the community members.
  15. The goals of TMDU are educating individuals who are going to be medical professionals, including doctors and dentists, creating systems for research studies in the medical care and life sciences fields fostering the development of sophisticated experts in medical and research fields, and making contributions towards society and humanity through these efforts. This year will be the first academic year of my second term as President of TMDU. I am eager to strengthen and promote the first term's accomplishments and, through a newly reorganized system intended to achieve our medium-term targets for the third term, aim to achieve a world-class ranking for TMDU. Specifically, I have launched four strategic initiatives. The first involves reorganizing the graduate schools to promote research in integrated preemptive medical and dental health care science based on new concepts and the training of internationally-minded medical professionals capable of making a mark both in Japan and overseas. We will establish new research fields such as bioinformatics to enable integrated handling of various medical information types. In these research fields, we plan to promote personnel training and research on technological advances such as IoT, AI, and robotics in medical and dental science. The second strategic initiative will aim to extend the track record of the innovations we have been pursuing in medicine, dentistry, the liberal arts, and our work overseas to publicize and inculcate the TMDU approach to education. To this aim, we will reorganize the graduate schools, establishing new research fields to form world-class teaching and research facilities engaged in integrated preemptive medical and dental health care science, and we will enhance our international contribution through three bases overseas. In addition to the courses already offered at Universidad de Chile and Chulalongkorn University, we plan to move forward with our detailed study to create a joint degree program with the University of Ghana and Mahidol University. The third strategic initiative involves further reinforcing the organic links among preemptive medicine, dentistry, and engineering, which are already strengths of TMDU. We have established the Institute of Research to accomplish this. It aims to generate ground-breaking innovation by eliminating barriers between different research areas at TMDU and providing strategic support for fields where our strengths lie. The fourth strategic initiative is the active utilization of the Institute of Information Technology, which was established this academic year. It is tasked with accumulating and analyzing data gathered together from inside and outside TMDU, including overseas, and managing and putting to practical use the results to promote TMDU's investor relations (IR) activities. I hope to move forward with reforms, such as utilizing TMDU IR data in faculty evaluation and remuneration to create a personnel and remuneration system in line with international norms, creating an environment conducive to foreign employment nationals and further internationalizing teaching and research at TMDU. We will construct a new governing system based on a Strategic Planning Council operating under the President and Board of Executive Directors through these initiatives. It will plan strategies for the administration of TMDU going forward. Plans also call for the establishment of a new personnel committee that will select new faculty members based on the viewpoint of TMDU as a whole. We are also considering reforms to our entrance examination system, including collaborating with Tokyo University of Foreign Studies on examining examination questions integrating the humanities and sciences and reciprocal dispatch of interviewers between our two universities. To formulate a long-term vision for TMDU, the President's think tank has started looking into the teaching, research, clinical and international aspects of medicine and dentistry, and administrative think tanks such as the President's Strategic Planning Section have also begun their investigations. On behalf of TMDU, I look forward to your understanding and support for our efforts. TMDU IS LOCATED in the Yushima / Shoheizaka area, which is considered the sacred birthplace of scholarship and learning in Japan. As a comprehensive medical university, TMDU cultivates "professionals with knowledge and humanity" who embark on a lifetime of service, advancing people's health and social welfare in the local community and spreading their wings to do the same in other communities across the globe.
  16. View full university

  22. We have named this structured evaluation system "Global Evaluation." View full university
  23. 24. View full university
