      2. Choosing a university is a decision that sets the life course. In Cologne, one of the best private universities of applied science in Germany, CBS Cologne Business School puts this at the heart of its business, reflected in the slogan "Your career. Ourmissionn". Approximately 1,400 young people from about 75 nations are studying at Cologne Business School, embedded in an extensive network of partnerships with around 100 universities worldwide and numerous large companies. CBS was founded in 1993 as a pure business school and is characterized by a wide range of English-language study programs. It was amongst the first universities in Germany to offer the internationally recognized Bachelor'sBachelor's degree. Today the portfolio comprises English and German-language Bachelor'sBachelor's and Master'sMaster's degree programs focusing on management and MBA and Executive MBA programs. The excellent study conditions are based on small learning groups and intensive supervision by the professors and lecturers. The task of CBS is to prepare students for career opportunities in business. That is why both the current state of research and strong practical relevance are vital parts of the courses. This is complemented with application-related knowledge, business games, internships, soft skills courses, and business projects, usually in cooperation with well-known companies. Students can also opt for working with CBS, the Cologne Business School management consultancy, with student participation. Thanks to CBS'sCBS's extensive business community network and regular career events on campus, students also have the regular opportunity to talk to company representatives. Those who prefer to get deeper into research can actively participate in research projects and have the chance to publish results. Eight internationally networked, interdisciplinary research clusters at CBS are available for this purpose. Obtaining a doctorate is also possible. Canada, Australia, Mexico, Japan, Netherlands, France … our students spend semesters abroad at more than 100 partner universities worldwide, supported by the CBS International Office. This internationality is also a vital part of campus life as students come from around 75 nations. Numerous professors and lecturers also have international backgrounds. That is why English is also spoken outside of the lectures. This creates an international atmosphere and promotes intercultural competence – skills that are in demand in international companies. As a private university, we see ourselves as a partner and service provider for our students. That is why we offer a wide range of consulting and services. This begins with study counseling services, information events, and trial lectures. The Career Service supports the transition into working life with a wide range of services, from job application advice over internal career fairs to networking. With over 1 million and around 100,000 students, Cologne is the German metropolis with the highest percentage of students. You can see this in the cityscape, and you can see it in the infrastructure for students – from the extensive range of university sports activities to the party scene. The campus itself is located in the "Südstadt" district of Cologne, one of Cologne'sCologne's most superior neighborhoods. On the occasion of our 25th anniversary, we will focus on charity and social responsibility at CBS in 2018. That is why we are launching a campaign under the motto, "CBS cares for …", which promotes the issues we care about, particularly in our society and around the world. For us, the primary focus is on education, the promotion of children and adolescents, the protection of our environment, and the sustainable use of resources. With this campaign, we want to spend one-year paying particular attention to the planning and implementation of charitable events and non-profit organizations' support. Together, we want to give children and young people around the world a chance for a safe, healthy, and prosperous future. You will find information on events and support projects that are regularly updated throughout the year on this page. You also have the opportunity to join our mission here directly. In addition to emergency aid for children, UNICEF is also committed to equal opportunities for all children and young people in education. 3. The KHM logo looks like a black square. And that is what it is. But that is not all that it is: there is much more to it! When the designers Uwe Loesch and Michael Wichelhaus created the newly founded academy's logo in 1990, they chose a form that offers many possibilities to draw connections. The history of art over the last century has been full of obsessions for the square: one thinks of Kazimir Malevich's Black Square, Hans Richter's early experimental films, Samuel Beckett's television play Square, John Baldessari's photo series Throwing four balls in the air to get a square, etc. Squares have the advantage of being neither ornamental nor directional. As a neutral straight shape, neither portrait nor landscape, they illustrate the importance of each artistic decision concerning format (we are not limited to the big screen!). If you look at the logo more closely, it also becomes clear that it differs significantly from Malevich's Black Square. It does have two sharp and two blurred edges. The black seems rich in contrast on the sharp edges but diffuses on the blurred edges. From this perspective, the KHM logo turns out to be a test image for questions of perception. And there is more: one knows, since Goethe's Theory of Colours, that color phenomena can appear at the border between black and white under certain light conditions (this can be tested on the edge of a window frame in the light of morning). Our black square is, therefore, not only black but also virtually colored. Thus, the KHM logo touches on questions of design, art and film history, of format and perception. And if you enter the KHM address Filzengraben Köln in Google Earth, you will discover the following text written on a flat roof: WHITE GROUND BLACK SQUARE. Next to it is a square made up of smaller squares. It is the KHM's QR code. So the logo returns technologically. The black square has arrived in the Information Age. On October 15, 1990, with 25 students on the postgraduate "Audiovisual Media" diploma course 1994, expansion of the course offering to include the undergraduate "Audiovisual Media" diploma course since 2004 doctoral program 2010 renaming of the two diploma courses to "Media and Fine Art." According to § 1 paragraph 2 of the Kunsthochschulgesetz (Art Colleges Act), the KHM is a corporation under public law and an institution of the federal state of NRW. The responsible authority is the Ministry for Innovation, Science, and Research of the Federal State of NRW. Current agreements on goals and performance are agreed upon for respective periods of four years. The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) offers the demanding, project-based "Media and Fine Art" course, which gives each student the chance to choose between and individually combine various artistic emphases. The particularly experimental climate at the KHM facilitates independent artwork. The "Media and Fine Art" diploma can be attained via a 9-semester (undergraduate) or 4-semester (postgraduate) course. The cornerstone of the "Media and Fine Art" course is the individual development of artistic projects. The KHM accepts 70 to 80 new enrolments per winter semester, with an average of around 320 students in total, of which approximately one third are international students. The Academy of Media Arts Cologne diploma is comparable internationally to an MFA (Master of Fine Art).
      4. Since its establishment in 1388, the University of Cologne has been a science and scholarship center in Europe. Today, it is one of the leading German research universities. We offer our students an extensive and diverse subject base and encourage them to follow their academic interests. This allows them to develop both intellectually and personally. We are firmly committed to advancing human knowledge through primary research, but with an eye to transfer and application in the real world. The University of Cologne's six Faculties are the institutional framework for its research activities. The Faculties offer a total of 102-degree programs and support ten cross-Faculty research and teaching centers. Moreover, the UoC has several large, internationally competitive research areas: mechanisms of aging-associated diseases plant breeding research quantum matter and materials social and economic behavior socio-economic, cultural, and political change in Africa Latin America Southeast Asia The University of Cologne closely cooperates with Cologne University Hospital and numerous renowned research institutions of the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association in the Cologne metropolitan area. Knowledge transfer and support for start-ups is particularly crucial to the university. The COPT Center for Organic Electronics supports the transfer of state-of-the-art research to the world of business. The incubator Gateway helps members of the university put their business ideas into practice. The high density of enterprises in the region creates the perfect environment for these efforts to succeed. Early-stage researchers find ideal conditions for their work in the university's 45 graduate schools and programs. The Faculty of Management, Economics, and Social Sciences combines theoretical groundwork with applied, practice-oriented research to deliver on its mission 'Innovation for Society.' The Faculty currently has six key research profile areas: Design & Behaviour: Behavioural Economics Behavioural Management Science Digital Transformation Demography and Social Inequality Markets and Governments and Value and Risk. These areas are organized as interdisciplinary research units that combine individual excellence and collaborative research. Collaboration with non-university institutes and Faculty members' service on German federal ministries' advisory boards fosters strong links between theory and practice. One hallmark of the Faculty of Law is the high diversification, allowing for modern and intensive research in nearly all legal fields. It has five focus areas in research connected by various overarching questions: International and European Law, International Private Law, and International Criminal Law Economics, Labour, Health, Social Matters, and Taxes Media, Communication, and Intellectual Property Citizenship and Statehood and the Foundations of Law. All of the Faculty's research addresses aspects of national law and comparative and international questions. The Faculty conducts fundamental and practice-oriented research and fosters exchange with other academic disciplines and with different social actors. This allows it to recognize tendencies of great societal relevance, leading to legal challenges in the future. The Faculty of Law thus fosters and supports the application and further development of law in legal practice and policy-making and society as a whole. The research focus area on "Tumor biology, infection, and immunity" focuses on the molecular mechanisms of defense against tumors and microorganisms. Moreover, it addresses fundamental questions of cancer biology, such as the role of DNA damage response, cancer immunity, and the microenvironment. The research focus area on "Homeostatic principles in metabolism and tissue regeneration" aims at unraveling the molecular principles that control metabolic signaling and cellular interactions in tissue maintenance, repair, and aging. It addresses central mechanisms that underlie metabolic disorders and altered cellular communication causal to tissue degeneration. The research focus area on "Neuromodulation" investigates the function and dysfunction of synapses, neurons, and neuronal networks to develop a comprehensive understanding based on the molecular and systems-level of the underpinnings of neurological and psychiatric disease. Ultimately, the focus lies on developing novel preventive and therapeutic strategies to treat neurological and psychiatric diseases. The Faculty has particular strengths in translational research. The Cluster of Excellence Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-Associated Diseases (CECAD), which is supported by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, investigates the causes of aging and age-associated disorders. CECAD links basic research and the application of new findings, pioneering new approaches for clinical research. Further interdisciplinary research institutions at the Faculty of Medicine include the interdisciplinary Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC), the Cologne Center for Genomics (CCG), and the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO). As a core facility, the Clinical Trials Centre Cologne (CTCC) supports the Faculty of Medicine's translational research approach. The research profile of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is comprehensive, ranging from African studies, pre-and early history to visual arts. With almost 15,000 students, it is the largest Faculty of the University of Cologne. Early on, students and early-stage researchers become acquainted with state-of-the-art research and interdisciplinary approaches. The a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne, funded by the European Union, facilitates their entry into an academic career. Researchers at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities have won significant research prizes and extensive funding, demonstrating that the Faculty is among the top institutions in the country's arts and humanities. In 2016, Professor Anne Storch (African studies) was awarded the Leibniz Prize, Germany's most important research prize Sven Bernecker (philosophy) was appointed Humboldt Professor, and a new Collaborative Research Center, 'Prominence in Language' (linguistics), has been established and is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Moreover, the North-Rhine Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts is supporting a long-term project in medieval philosophy on the Arabic philosopher Averroes (Ibn Rushd). Behind these recent successes are established, internationally renowned research institutes such as the Thomas Institute in medieval philosophy, which is unique in and well-known across Europe, the Morphomata Center for Advanced Studies, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Husserl Archive, the Documentation, and Research Centre of the Theatre Collection at Wahn Castle, or the Ethics Forum. With the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH) and the Data Center for the Humanities (DCH), the digital humanities have emerged as a significant component of the Faculty's research profile. People and enterprises require information in order to make decisions. Providing the right information at the right time, in the right quality, and at the right place is crucial. Current global trends such as population and economic growth and climate change exert increasing pressure on water resources worldwide. These resources are the basis for food production, urban and industrial water supplies, and hydropower. Experts understand that multiple problems of water resources management can only be addressed through a holistic approach. The profile of the Master's program is application-oriented. Besides providing the participants with an overview of the water sector in general, the aim is to educate experts in the field of Integrated Water Resources Management. This requires diversification of their knowledge and leads to the capability of cross-linked thinking. The answer to complex environmental and water-related problems requires more economical and managerial competencies than classical technical knowledge. The consolidation of different disciplines has a methodological dimension and a cultural and a human one because interdisciplinary teamwork requires knowledge sharing and effective communication. 8. View full university
