In 2007, two historic Albany schools, The Albany Academy and Albany Academy for Girls, merged to form The Albany Academies. The two schools, each 200 years old, have retained their separate identities and traditions. Students continue to receive a diploma from either AAG or AA. However, the two schools have created an extraordinarily useful educational model: ten grades of single-gender education, followed by two final years of coeducational classes and co-curricular activities. As members of the Academy community, we acknowledge that our actions and attitudes affect the well-being of others and the school as a whole. We believe that our community must be built on trust and mutual respect, which will encourage each member to reach their unique potential. To this end, we will strive to foster the ideals of honesty, tolerance, and integrity both in ourselves and in others. We recognize that we must have the courage to support and affirm one another and to conduct ourselves with civility in all aspects of our lives. The Continuing Medical Education activities of Albany Medical College are designed to meet both institutional requirements and individual physician needs for CME. Albany Law School's students can range in age from 20 years to 60 years in any given year. The law school often has dozens of parents in law school full time, and they often find one another to form informal support groups. Albany Law School is the nation's oldest independent school of law. Founded in 1851, Albany Law has played an essential role in the development of legal education in the United States. In mid-19th century America, the standard preparation for the bar was a legal clerkship. The school's founders—Amos Dean, Ira Harris, and Amasa Parker, all successful lawyers active in public affairs—felt that this approach fell short in preparing new lawyers. The trio set out to replace it with a structured educational program that encompassed thorough knowledge of law principles and experience in applying them. Their philosophy of legal education caught hold, and Albany Law School flourished. This combination of theory and practice continues to be a hallmark of an Albany Law education today. In 1875, Albany Law published the nation's first student-edited law review, the Albany Law School Journal. An innovative lecture series on legal ethics began just after the turn of the century. Throughout the 20th century, Albany Law School expanded and diversified the faculty, curriculum, and student body. It added important programs such as the Albany Law School Clinic & Justice Center. Students and faculty provide legal support for low-income citizens, and the Government Law Center, a highly respected resource for law- and policymakers in Albany and elsewhere around the country. Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) is committed to graduating the best health care minds in the world, with an array of degree programs designed to help students succeed in pharmacy and other health-related fields. There are approximately 1,400 students enrolled at the College and more than 150 full- and part-time faculty. The College has campuses in Albany, New York, and Colchester, Vermont. Our Vermont Campus is home to the only pharmacy program in the state. The ACPHS experience is one that combines quality academics, experiential learning, personalized attention, and a strong emphasis on service – all of which help our students grow personally and develop into talented and trusted professionals. ACPHS has long been regarded for its Doctor of Pharmacy program, which remains the school's core program. In recent years, the College has expanded its academic offerings to include five bachelor's programs and five master's programs in the health sciences. Opportunities exist for students within each of these programs to work side-by-side with faculty on groundbreaking research in areas such as cancer, infectious disease, and obesity. These opportunities, along with access to resources such as the cutting edge Pharmaceutical Research Institute, are part of what distinguishes ACPHS from other colleges and universities. When it was chartered in 1881, ACP (as it would be known for the next 127 years) was one of only 14 colleges of pharmacy in the United States. On October 3, 1881, the College held its inaugural class in the Eagle Street building that housed Albany Medical College (see photo). The class was attended by 21 students, including one woman, Sarah Simonet. Students who would go on to complete the two-year program earned a Ph.G. or Graduated in Pharmacy degree. The first decade of the new millennium was a time of exceptional growth and change. During this period, the College built or acquired eight buildings, including three on-campus residence halls, the construction of a brand new Student Center, and the opening of a new campus in Colchester, VT. A range of new degree programs was also introduced during this decade, leading to a new name for the institution - Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. As the health care system transitions to a more patient-centric model, the College is also changing to keep pace with the demand for new and expanded skill sets.
