Belmont is a two-form entry Community Primary School, with up to 420 full-time pupils aged 4-11 years, and 52 part-time pupils in the Nursery. It is situated in the heart of Chiswick and its catchment is the immediate neighborhood. We are very proud of our School, the many achievements of our children, the quality of the teaching and educational opportunities we offer, and our friendly and supportive community of children and families, staff, and governors. This has resulted in three new Reception classrooms with a dedicated outdoor learning environment, in addition to six new classrooms, a Group Teaching Room, and a new school kitchen in our new build block. These facilities now provide increased access to a broad and rich learning experience for our children. We redesigned our school playground in 2016 and this now enhances children's outdoor learning and access to high-quality PE provision, in addition to embedding and extending our Forest Schools provision. The school is now recognized as a Learning Hub for Outdoor Learning and Mathematics and offers training and support to other schools and settings through the Harrow Teaching School Alliance in collaboration with the Harrow School Improvement Partnership. At Belmont School, we believe that all children have a desire to learn (article 28). We understand that if the learning that takes place is challenging, interesting, and creative, then our children will develop into life-long learners. Alongside this, we are responsible for teaching the statutory curriculum, but we strive to deliver a much broader and more balanced curriculum than what is compulsory. The National Curriculum (2014) provides schools with the outline of knowledge, skills, and understanding that we are required to cover in school. We choose to teach much of this through creative, cross-curricular themes, through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which covers our teaching in: Science, Art, and Design, Design Technology, Geography, and History. We believe that teaching through the IPC helps us to fully promote the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of our pupils as well as achieve the aims of promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. It is also underpinned by our commitment to the UNCRC charter setting out children’s rights and responsibilities, which ultimately enables children to become respectful global citizens. Although the IPC is our driving force for teaching, we also need to take account of changes in the statutory expectations, in particular, English and Maths where the content of learning has become significantly more demanding. This means that whilst we endeavor to integrate Maths and English skills into all IPC activities, we also teach many elements of the programs of study for English and Maths discreetly. Other subjects which are not fully covered by the IPC include Computing, Citizenship, Languages, Music, PE, and RE. In this instance, other programs of study or schemes are used to fully achieve the aims and objectives of the National Curriculum. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception classes) we follow the seven EYFS areas of learning: Personal, social & emotional development Physical development Communication and language Literacy Mathematics Understanding the world, and Expressive arts and design. Within our Early Years Provision and Key Stage 1, daily phonics sessions are taught in classes, by the Letters and Sounds document. This provides a synthetic and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics and supports both the development of children's reading and writing skills At Belmont, we are proud of our quality first teaching and endeavor to enable our whole school community to participate in the review and evaluation process of our rich and rigorous curriculum. At Belmont School, as the curriculum has evolved, we have developed our new assessment system which was implemented fully from September 2015. We worked closely with other local schools to trial this and we are using software from an existing provider to the school, which is used by more than 3000 other schools nationally. Our system reports pupils’ attainment and progress against new Bands rather than levels. These Bands are all benchmarked against where pupils are expected to be for their age. We are a special school in every sense. Our dedicated staff is passionate about providing the best possible opportunities and education for all of our students. Our students are unique and we work hard to understand ways to support and guide them on an individual basis. We celebrate difference, we challenge ourselves and the students, we resolve conflict and we have high expectations about student behavior, relationships, and attainment. Supporting our students can be a challenge but this is far outweighed by the pleasure we get from seeing them grow and progress in all aspects of their lives. Many of our students exhibit very challenging behavior and have found it difficult to cope in mainstream settings. Sometimes their early schooling will have been chaotic and fragmented so often they will have fallen behind their peers academically. This can result in self-esteem issues and anti-social behavior. When a student comes to Belmont Park we see it not as a punishment but as an opportunity to turn their lives around. They all have the right to achieve and we believe that every parent and carer has the right to expect that our school will do its very best for its child. We work in partnership with parents, carers and other agencies to help our students make positive choices and changes which will serve them better in their future life. A key feature of what we do at Belmont Park is teaching our students to take responsibility for their behavior and its consequences. They learn to put things right when they go wrong, together with learning the values of tolerance and respect for themselves and others. We do not believe it is acceptable for our students to behave in an unsafe or inappropriate way without regard to other people. English, maths, science, and ICT all have a very high profile. Our approach is based on inquiry learning finding out the answer to a big question. The pupil's voice is central to this approach as the children pose questions about what they want to explore about the inquiry. These questions (our ‘wonderings’) determine the direction of the investigation and ensure that pupils are fully engaged in the learning journey. A pupil’s learning journey each academic year includes a combination of whole school termly topics, projects, and themed weeks. This themed approach motivates the children and creates enthusiasm for their learning. This approach also enables them to become increasingly independent. At Belmont, our foundation subjects are taught through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The IPC is a thematic and creative curriculum that provides pupils with a clear process of learning to enable them to develop their knowledge, skills, and understanding across the foundation subjects. Children must apply to be admitted to the Junior School in the September following their seventh birthday and we aim to make the transfer from Infant to Junior School as smooth as possible. As Belmont pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for your pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering curriculum. We promote our school anti-bullying policy through PHSE, drama, workshops, and school assemblies. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms through circle time and the school PHSE curriculum. With good reason, most students are concerned about one thing: "What should I major in? What program of classes will get me the farthest in life?" Here, "the farthest" is usually defined in terms of finance and sometimes also in terms of personal job satisfaction and social belonging. There is nothing wrong with this kind of reasoning. We encourage it at Belmont Abbey College by our goal to have you "succeed professionally and be a blessing to yourselves and others." However, this is not the whole story: we have other goals as well: to have you "lead lives of integrity and become responsible citizens." This goal points to areas of life known under the names of ethics, politics, and theology. Are these real subjects taught and learned, or are they strictly matters of individual or family-inherited opinion? There is also the Fine Arts (drama, music, creative writing, etc.): does anybody need to understand them if he is not trying to be an artist? What about mathematics – should they be studied by those who "hate" math? Should English, world literature, or history be forced upon those who "hate" to write papers? Should a young adult be required to learn more about fields that will probably never contribute to their future income? The Core Curriculum is Belmont Abbey's "yes" answer to all these questions. Many students today object to this: a list of "required courses" resembles High School and sends the message that 17 – 22-year-old persons, living away from their parents, are not yet fully equipped to be their masters, choosing only those courses that fulfill their dreams, as currently embraced at that particular age. We entirely agree that College should be a place to begin to fulfill your dreams beyond what happened in High School. Moreover, one big part of that is filling you with new dreams – by requiring you to study what you may not understand or appreciate. Unlike High School – where the civil governments mandate requirements in each state – at the college level, each institution voluntarily chooses its own set of general requirements to provide a structured education according to that institution's vision. Accreditation pertains primarily to the academic standards of the particular subjects: each College is only obliged to remain faithful to its mission when it comes to the core curriculum. Belmont Christian College is a Pre School to Year 12 College-based in beautiful Lake Macquarie. Founded in 1982, Belmont Christian College is a ministry of Belmont Baptist Church and is an active member of the local community. Based on the historic BHP John Darling coal mine, the College facilities are well maintained and contain much history.
