  1. At Newtons Primary School we have a clear vision for our children “Together we reach for our personal best.” Through our broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum, we prepare pupils to learn and thrive living as citizens in the modern world. We pride ourselves on having vibrant, dedicated staff who share the common goal of developing children’s academic abilities and life skills through engaging and inspiring lessons. Children are always encouraged to investigate, initiate, contribute and reflect as they progress along their path of learning. For us at Newtons Primary, education is about more than just exam results, it is about every child reaching their full potential, socially and academically. It is about ensuring that each child is cherished, supported, and empowered to achieve. Good manners and respect for one another are highly valued we promote social awareness and provide clear moral guidance. We never underestimate the important role we play in your child’s life and therefore strive to make each day the best it can be. We offer an exceptionally nurturing environment to help children develop the skills and knowledge they need to progress in their education and beyond. Our pupils learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Pupils take part in a wide range of sporting activities both during lessons and extracurricular clubs, including a very popular ballroom dancing club. Pupils are taught how to adopt safe practices in all of their lessons. We have theatre companies who visit to reinforce road safety. Children in Years 5 and 6 are offered Cycle Training. If they pass Level 2 they are allowed to cycle to school. We offer a wide and varied curriculum. Our curriculum is enriched by visitors to school and the trips that different year groups take. We value the importance of the Arts. Every child in Years 2 and 3 learns to play the violin at no cost to parents. Children who show aptitude and enjoyment may continue playing the violin to the end of Year 6. Our curriculum allows all pupils to develop their key skills of reading, writing, mathematics, and computing. Our pupils are taught how to work as members of groups and teams. We have strong links with the local community. We entertain elderly residents at the local community center at Christmas and sing carols on the Orchard Village Estate. We have many fund-raising projects throughout the year and we look at the work of different charities. View full school

  3. Your child will shortly be entering our school at the start of an exciting adventure on what will hopefully be a lifelong learning experience. We trust that they will enjoy their time at Newton and do their best to achieve and learn well. We hope that this will be the beginning of a long and lasting relationship between ourselves, your children, and you the parents. Every child in our school is a special and important person with particular needs and interests. We strive to achieve the highest possible standards for all our pupils and to provide them with a caring, safe and stimulating environment. Most of all we want our pupils to enjoy the whole learning process. We seek to achieve this through strong partnership working with the home, school, and community. We see the support of parents as an essential element in the success of your child’s education and we will endeavor to build a lasting relationship between the school and yourselves. Pupils from Nursery to Year 2 follow the Foundation Phase curriculum. It combines what we used to call Early Years Education (for 3 to 5-year-olds) and Key Stage 1 (5 to 7-year-olds) of the National Curriculum. The Foundation Phase is based on the principle that early years' provision should offer a sound foundation for future learning through a developmentally appropriate curriculum. It places great emphasis on children learning by doing. Young children are given opportunities to gain first-hand experiences through play and active involvement rather than by completing exercises in books. They are given time to develop their speaking and listening skills and to become confident in their reading and writing abilities. Mathematics is practical so that children can see how problems are solved and how important mathematics is in their everyday lives. There is an emphasis on children underst\nding how things work and on finding different ways to solve problems. View full school

  5. Newton Prep children are bright and inquisitive individuals, each with unique abilities, interests, and aspirations. They have exceptional opportunities at this school – for personal development, adventure, and achievement in many directions. We encourage their curiosity and imagination at every stage of school life, and provide important foundations for a love of life and learning in this formative period. Newton Prep is a successful and dynamic school with high standards and expectations. We are interested in education in the fullest sense, and seek to provide a proper balance of academic excellence, fun, and activity. The teaching staff is wholly committed to giving the children an outstanding educational experience during their time at Newton Prep. We value the quality of our relationships with parents and children, which are grounded in respect, trust, and honesty. Newton Prep is a vibrant co-ed school for children aged 3-13 which offers a challenging education for inquisitive children who are eager to engage fully with the world in which they are growing up. Our aims: To inspire children to be adventurous and committed in their learning. To provide balance and breadth in all aspects of a child’s education: intellectual, aesthetic, physical, moral, and spiritual. To encourage initiative, individuality, independence, creativity, and inquiry. To promote responsible behavior and respect for others in a happy, safe, and caring environment. Central to our mission statement is our School Council, our equivalent to a Governing Body. We are privileged to have a team of impressive individuals in a variety of fields, giving us a breadth and depth of educational, political, and community experience with which to realize our aims. Newton Prep is an independent preparatory school and nursery in Battersea, South West London for boys and girls aged 3 to 13. Deciding your child’s schooling is one of the most important you will make as a family. We are very fortunate in London to have so many good prep schools to choose from and many of your friends and associates will have a view about the ‘best schools. Firstly, we think you will find us to be a very happy community. Newton Prep children are full of life, spark, and character. We celebrate their individuality and do not try to force them into a particular way of being. They form strong friendships here and the relationships between the staff and the children are positive and mutually respectful. We are a big prep school. We have over 600 children on roll (about 300 in the Pre-Prep and 300 in the Prep) and yet the pastoral care is exceptional. The children know each other very well and so do their teachers. Also, we have outstanding facilities. With a 300-seat auditorium, a 120-seat Recital Hall, a music technology suite, 3 state-of-the-art science labs, a wonderful library, and spacious classrooms, the children have many opportunities to develop their interests and enthusiasms. From the outside, you might not realize that we also have a very large all-weather pitch and a huge playground for our Lower School (Pre-Prep) children to play on. When they come to apply for senior schools (at 11+ or 13+) our children are well prepared for the increasingly competitive exams and assessments they must take. Newton Prep is academically ambitious. That does not mean to say we reduce their educational experience down to slavishly slogging through practice papers but it does mean that we have the ‘best schools in our sights - whether that be a London day school or a boarding school well beyond the limits of the M25. The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is based upon the national guidelines for the Early Years Foundation Stage which incorporates seven areas of learning through three main characteristics of effective learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically. Prime areas are Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, Communication, and Language and Physical Development, and the Specific areas are Literacy, Mathematics, Expressive Arts and Design, and Understanding the World. Alongside learning the basics of literacy and numeracy, the children develop skills and interests across a broad spectrum of enriching and exciting experiences. Most importantly, children begin their social journey - an adventure that involves building positive relationships with the adults and peers within the setting, learning and achieving through play and focused work with caring and professional practitioners. Throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage, we understand that each child is unique. Children are engaged in whole class, small group, and individual activities which are tailored to their learning needs. Activities are planned by the staff around topic themes and the interests of the children and their families. We incorporate cultural and religious festivals that are of significance to our families. The curriculum is flexible so that it embraces significant developments in each child’s school and home life such as the birth of a sibling, a holiday, or moving house. Planning is reviewed daily to ensure the best opportunities for the development of each child. In Year 1 we have a full-time teaching assistant in each class and in Year 2 we have two full-time teaching assistants who divide their time equally between all four classes. The role of the teaching assistant is to support the class teacher in providing pastoral care and the curriculum. In Key Stage 1, we teach through topics, allowing us to provide an exciting and cohesive curriculum, using a cross-curricular approach. The children have lessons with subject specialist teachers in PE, French, Music, ICT and, in Year 2, Art also. From Year 1, we begin to set the children for maths informally, in addition to differentiating within all subjects. Sets in mathematics are called maths clubs and are flexible. We offer extra support to children who require further consolidation or extension of skills learned in the classroom. Children enjoy a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. As part of the weekly program, teachers provide clubs for Traditional Games, Construction, Origami, Art and Sewing, and Needlework. Ballet, Tap, Judo, tennis, gymnastics, yoga, chess, and many other activities are available as paid extras. In the Upper School, we aim to create a vibrant learning environment in which all children are allowed to develop and flourish. We provide outstanding opportunities throughout the Upper School in all pursuits: academic, creative, physical, and social. We take a great deal of pride in our community and enjoy sharing in each other’s many and varied successes. As a school, we encourage independence and aim to ensure that all members of our school feel that they are valued and respected as individuals. By using subject specialist teachers throughout the curriculum we fire the children’s imagination and inspire them to be creative, adventurous, and committed in their learning. We promote inquiry and initiative and ensure that they can enjoy the many and varied opportunities on offer in our purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. Throughout the school, you will find motivated children, enjoying their learning in wonderful facilities. We have high expectations of all of our boys and girls and ensure that they receive all of the support they need to achieve their potential. We aim to provide the highest possible level of pastoral care so that each child flourishes at Newton Prep. By working closely with the family, we provide an individual experience, tailored to a child’s needs and designed to bring out the very best in every child. View full school

  9. Our school opened in September 1954 as Orpington Grammar School for Girls in response to the rapid growth of Orpington and Petts Wood over the previous forty years. The first single form entry was housed temporarily at Midfield Girls’ School. The present site was acquired in 1954 and we moved in as a three-form entry school on 23rd September 1957. Our school has grown considerably over the past 60 years and our buildings have expanded to accommodate our growing numbers. The site now includes a purpose-built Sixth Form block, a dedicated Music Block, a Technology Block and Engineering suite, Sports Hall, and, of course, our Tennis Centre. In 2017, we reached our current full capacity with six forms of entry in each year group. At this point, our new house was established as we added Pheonix House to the previous five houses of Nightingale, Wren, Swift, Falcon, and Griffin. As is always the case at Newstead, this was chosen by a student vote. We believe fully in embracing fundamental British values and this was just one example of how we embrace democracy at Newstead. We are proud of our school and its excellent academic success. However, we know that this academic success is only possible with the right support, a kind and nurturing environment, and extensive co-curricular provision. We encourage all students to build resilience and to balance their academic studies with sport, music, and culture. Examples include trips to Japan, New York, Borneo, and Malta, our elective program which features film studies, stand-up comedy, and archery, our Year 7 Foundation Studies program as well as extensive careers and University application support. Newstead prides itself on providing an exciting learning environment, both in terms of resources and expectations, so that each individual can flourish. We recognize the range of students’ abilities, both in terms of specific subjects and personal and social education, and try to respond, often through links with the wider community. Newstead is nationally and internationally renowned for offering the best ways to provide for the needs of very able students both through the formal curriculum and beyond. Newstead Wood School is a very special place that provides an excellent opportunity for all its students. In 2017 we joined United Learning, the next chapter in our life, and are looking forward to working alongside some of the very best schools in the country as we continue to ‘grow in strength’! We are proud to offer a full and rounded educational experience with over 300 educational trips and visits taking place each year. We know that these are so important, both to complement and develop the academic studies, but also to offer cultural experiences, and enrichment opportunities to our students. We value the importance of public speaking and opportunities for leadership and will strive to develop these in all our students. There are many opportunities to develop talents in sport and music along with Duke of Edinburgh, Young Enterprise, and Community Sports Leader Awards. Enrichment Week provides an additional forum for cross-curricular studies and the exploration of subjects in depth. Finally, our extensive links with the local community ensure students become involved and develop an appreciation of the wider world. As students progress through school they can become involved in a wide range of influential leadership opportunities. Our Head Student and Deputies are complemented by the House Captains, Subject Leaders, School Parliament, Eco Captains, and Sports Captains. These students have an integral role in representing the school. The support we offer our students is excellent. This can be in the form of emotional support for students and their families when they need it, and also in terms of the support on offer for making subject choices or University applications. Our Careers provision and Beyond Newstead events are tailored to our student's needs and always very popular. At Newstead Wood School we share, celebrate, and are inspired by: A passion for learning Respect based on freedom and trust Local, national, and international partnerships Creative and demanding learning experiences All achievements, both in the class and beyond Each individual for who they are and who they can become Confidence in our ability to improve ourselves and our future View full school

  11. Newport was built in 1883 as an Infant and Junior school and was amalgamated in 2004 into a full primary school. The school is located over three sites the main school site (Reception to Year 6) and a Nursery and Nature reserve which are a short distance from the main school building. In 2011 Newport School increased in size and was converted into a 4 form entry school. The school serves diverse population pupils come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds of which a large majority, are of Asian British/Pakistani heritage. 13. Newnham Juniors is a large school with 360 pupils on roll, located in Eastcote, Middlesex. Our pupils are from a rich, culturally mixed background and the proportion of pupils with special educational needs is below average. Many factors contribute towards the school’s success and the first and probably the most important is the strong school community. The staff, as in most schools, are hardworking and go over and above to find ways to make the learning environment fun and stimulating for the pupils. Many members of staff including teachers, teaching assistants, and office staff has been at the school for over ten years. This stability leads to a common approach to all aspects of school life, including consistency and ownership of high expectations in terms of achievement and standards. Everyone takes great pride in what happens here. The School Council is well established and the pupil's voice is strong, with children making democratic decisions on what and how they learn and the Governing Body supports and challenges the school to maintain high standards. Parents are kept fully informed about the progress their children are making and are extremely supportive and keen to be partners in their children’s education. One of the comments from an end of year 6 questionnaire in 2014 was, ‘My child was offered a fantastic range of opportunities in a safe, friendly environment. She was academically challenged and her needs were catered for. Newnham also has a great community feel’. Over the last few years, the school has continued to develop an ethos of ‘hard work achieves success. An inspiring visit by Mathew Syed (British journalist and broadcaster who also played table tennis for Great Britain in two Olympic Games) cemented this belief and now through our day-to-day rewards and weekly assemblies, we celebrate effort and progress by all. Our creative curriculum gives children the opportunity to be successful in all areas and we try to make the learning interactive and real e.g. we recreate a Victorian coal mine experience from which the children write emotive poetry. Through a termly cycle of curriculum monitoring by subject leaders, which includes a discussion with pupils, staff at Newnham work hard to keep the curriculum up to date and relevant to all and strive to be creative, apply a cross-curricular approach, and offer pupils a wide range of learning experiences. Through the provision of these stimulating experiences in and out of the school environment, the children are provided with a platform to write for a range of purposes. Since OFSTED in 2011, a strong focus on developing sentence construction throughout the school, hand in hand with an increased emphasis on grammar is having a significant impact on improving children’s writing. Professional development for all staff has been important, alongside quality planned writing opportunities in the foundation subjects. At the heart of our approach is Assessment for Learning (AFL) and the desire for all children to develop the skills of collaboration, inquiry, and reasoning linked with the 5Rs (respect, responsibility, reflection, resilience, resourcefulness). Marking is part of the learning process where next steps and peer and self-assessment all play a part in supporting the children to move forward. Formative assessment feeds into weekly planning which constantly evolves and this gives a strong sense of ownership for all the staff. Termly pupil progress meetings help to identify and provide for children who are not achieving their full potential. This provision could be through intervention programs or extra resources or further support. All data is discussed with parents and children which supports them to know where they are aiming for and their next steps. The data tracking system allows the SMT to identify strengths and weaknesses across the school and act upon them where necessary. This information, along with the curriculum monitoring, feeds into the School Development Plan, and governors are also involved in a partnership with the monitoring. In conclusion, the school continually reflects on its achievements and its areas for development. We look at new, up-to-date ways in which to engage children and to keep the learning process fun and positive for all. View full school

  19. The aim of Newlands Junior College (NJC) is to deliver an alternative form of education, aimed at young people who find that mainstream secondary school education does not best suit them but who have the potential to become successful people and good employees, thereby contributing positively to society. We recruit around 30 pupils per year from partner secondary schools. They experience an alternative approach to their education in years S3 and S4. In addition to academic subjects, the NJC curriculum combines vocational/career training and personal development with sports, nutrition, and outdoor activities. By including these elements, we believe that the NJC approach increases motivation, skills, and confidence in addition to providing formal qualifications at SCQF Level 4 and Level 5. At the end of S4, leavers will have the qualifications, skills, and personal qualities that will allow them to access one of the guaranteed apprenticeships or college courses the NJC can make available. This is a unique opportunity for young people of school age to learn in an environment that models itself in the work place but, just as importantly, provides great experiences designed to develop areas of skill and expertise that will make them rounded individuals who are attractive to future employers. Newlands Junior College exists to provide opportunities for young people who have potential but are at risk of disengaging from education and failing to find a fulfilling and rewarding role in later life. Newlands Junior College prepares young people for guaranteed apprenticeships and college places through a vocationally focused educational experience aimed at developing the students’ existing and latent potential. With positive relationships as the key to success, the experience provides a skills-based, personalized approach through which individual excellence is fostered in preparation for work. Newlands Junior College is designed to provide a unique type of education, suited to the particular needs of young people who do not learn well in the mainstream educational system, but who have the potential to become useful contributors to society. At NJC, all students experience a curriculum designed around three main strands: An academic curriculum focused on key skills. Vocational Education. Personal Development. The emphasis on vocational education and personal development is the distinguishing feature of the NJC curriculum. It is seen as essential if our young people are to be motivated and encouraged to learn. NJC’s academic curriculum has a focus on four vital areas – English, IT, Mathematics, and Science. These are offered as discrete subjects, although every effort is made to establish connections amongst them. All students have the opportunity to achieve National awards at levels 4, 5, or beyond depending upon individual needs and aspirations. Other curricular areas are covered mainly through planned interdisciplinary studies. There is a focus on project-based learning and extensive use of new technology. The approach is aimed at engaging the interest of students who have not experienced success and fulfillment in the mainstream. View full school

  23. Newland House is an independent, co-educational, Preparatory day school for boys from 4 to 13 years and for girls from 4 to 11 years. The school is based in Twickenham and borders Teddington. Children join the school in Reception in the September following their fourth birthday or in Year 3*, where we admit a further class of children. Reception entry is non-selective and entry to Year 3 is based upon a 7+ Assessment. Children move across from the Pre-Prep into the Preparatory School in Year Three. Two-thirds of the pupils in the year come directly from our Pre-Prep and the remaining children have secured places as following sitting our 7+ assessment earlier in the year. From 2016 we offer places to children across three classes in Reception and as a consequence are phasing out the 7+ entry point after the last assessment in 2018. In Year Three, careful consideration is given to placing children in one of three mixed-ability classes. At this stage, the children are based very much in their classroom with their class teacher but they are taught certain subjects like DT, music, art, ICT, and games by a specialist teacher. As they move up through the school, they are taught more by subject specialists. Children will remain in these class groups until the end of Year Six when the girls sit their examinations and move on to senior school. In the final two years of the school, the remaining boys are placed in one of three classes. Two of these will work towards taking the Common Entrance Examination in June of their final year. The third class is comprised of boys who will sit for a scholarship to the senior school of their choice. We are proud of our excellent scholarship record. However, we gain enormous pleasure helping children of all academic abilities gain places at schools of their choice. We prepare them well, not just academically but socially too so that when they leave us they are pleasant, well-balanced children who look forward with confidence to the next challenges that lie ahead in their lives. The Pre-Prep forms the foundation of pupils' primary education and we provide an innovative, welcoming, and secure environment where children can develop their style of learning and explore the breadth of the curriculum offered to them. We admit children on a first come first served basis, so parents wishing to register their children are advised to do so as soon as possible. There are no entrance requirements and the school caters to a range of abilities. Confidence is a key factor in a child's learning environment and we work with parents and children to create an individualized teaching environment bespoke to each child's needs. We have a well-qualified and enthusiastic teaching staff, a specialist PE teacher, a specialist music teacher, a learning support teacher, and seven teaching assistants, all of whom are in regular contact with parents. Everyone in the school is encouraged to show mutual respect’s beliefs and individuality through courteous and considerate behavior. This helps to create a supportive and understanding learning environment and atmosphere, which is one of the real hallmarks of our Pre-Prep. We are currently moving towards three classes across all year groups but at present have three classes in Reception, two in Year 1 and two in Year 2. The move will be completed following the Reception intake in September 2018 when we will be three form entries across the entire school. Each class contains around twenty pupils. Every child should be happy, secure, valued, and confident. Our philosophy is to value every child as a unique individual, who enjoys learning and thinking for him or herself. We provide a supportive and secure environment in which every child can flourish and learn at their own pace and in their way. Our role is to stimulate and encourage their development and enjoyment of learning through a variety of different activities in secure indoor and outdoor situations, through play, and structured and creative activities. We encourage the growth of social skills and empathy amongst the children. The relationships which the children develop with each other and with our staff are central to their happiness and lay the best possible foundation for their future. The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) is a school association with around 650 of the world’s leading prep schools in membership. Schools must reach a very high standard to be eligible for membership, with strict criteria on teaching a broad curriculum, maintaining excellent standards of pastoral care, and keeping staff members’ professional development training up to date. Whilst schools in the association are independent and have their ethos, they are all committed to delivering an excellent, well-rounded education to the pupils in their care. IAPS believes that schools should be unfettered by government interference and with fewer financial and other resourcing constraints than state schools, to ensure that their educational provision is tailored to the needs of the individual children. 24.
