Forest School at St Michael in the Hamlet offers a unique hands-on outdoor natural learning experience on our grounds that compliments both the school’s ethos and curriculum. Our outdoor environment gives us a unique place that we use in a fun and challenging way, where learners may choose to follow a suggested activity or to pursue their ideas so they can further their development and practice new skills. Our St. Michael in the Hamlet Creative Curriculum works for hand in hand with the 2014 Primary National Curriculum. We teach through a carefully planned thematic approach, valuing a broad and balanced curriculum that gives children the opportunities to achieve their potential in all subject areas. We have designed our curriculum to build on children’s prior learning over time, linking key concepts across subjects as well as developing a breadth of subject knowledge. Topics are designed to support children’s natural curiosity and stimulate their creativity. Topics begin with a ‘hook’ or ‘opening event’ and finish with a ‘final celebration’. Trips and outings are central to the children’s learning. In addition to this, they will have a series of memorable learning experiences, which may include inspirational speakers, STEM workshops, LJMU dance students, global students, topic-themed days, and themed weeks. Some subjects may be taught discreetly, such as English and mathematics. Other subjects may be taught as part of a topic, for example, they may learn history alongside their geography, or science alongside their design technology. Where possible the links have been made from their topic work to maths and English to enable pupils to apply skills in different contexts. Our curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, philosophical, and physical development of our pupils. The children experience these through a wide range of subjects and opportunities such as Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE), Philosophy for Children (P4C), Rights Respecting School Agenda (RRSA), mindfulness, forest school and personal, social health education (PHSSE). We are proud of our wider opportunities and the range of after-school clubs on offer, from magic to dodge ball to e-cadets. We end our academic year with a ‘summer festival’ to display our pupils’ creative talents celebrating our diverse array of wider opportunities such as singing, brass, drumming, and violin.

Destination Reader is an approach to teaching reading in KS2. The approach involves daily sessions incorporating whole class modeling before the children applying these skills through partner work and independent reading. Children deepen their understanding of the texts they read through the systematic use of a series of strategies and language stems. The approach encompasses the key principles of effective reading provision and fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum by creating a deep understanding of texts, developing oracy around reading, and increasing children’s breadth of reading. Destination Reader also helps to build a culture of reading for pleasure and purpose. Church End is situated just east of the center of Brent and is the heart of the original parish of Willesden. St.Mary’s church Church End, once also known as Crouch (Cross) End, grew up around the church, which was located on the edge of marshland, an equal distance from the three main settlements in the area. The school was founded to educate the children of the parish and to bring them up in the Christian Faith. Happily, we are now housed in modern buildings, immediately behind the Church, but our reason for being here is still the same: To give the children of the neighborhood a sound basic education within the context of the Christian Faith. St. Mary's is the oldest school in Brent, dating back to 1777 when a local philanthropist gave £200 towards building a Charity School in Willesden. In 1809 the Sunday school was founded and this was extended to a day school in 1818 - long before the Education Act made education available for all children. The famous shrine of Our Lady of Willesden - "The Black Virgin of Willesden" - to which miraculous powers were ascribed is also the school's logo. St Mary’s Church adjacent to the School is also home to the ancient shrine of Our Lady of Willesden, and to the Holy Water of Willesden which flows underneath the church and is freely available to be taken away. Some experts state that the name Willesden, or as it was called "Wilsdon", or "Willesden" means the spring or well at the foot of the hill. The church is kept open all day for everyone to worship or to light candles.

At St Joachim's educational visits are a very essential and important part of the children's learning experience. All children from Nursery to year 6 go on educational visits which are linked to their learning and the curriculum. These visits can range from local to international and some are residential. If your child has any difficulties in accessing the curriculum, we will work with you, as a parent or carer, to identify these difficulties and then find ways of providing appropriate support in line with the National Special Needs Code of Practice. In line with our ethos as a Catholic school, we celebrate the social, cultural, and linguistic diversity of our school and the local community. Our children are guided to an appreciation of, and respect for, each individual’s contribution to the life of school and community. The wonderful work the children are doing and the activities they take part in, both at Nursery and Key Stage 1, based at our Old Jamaica Road site, and at Key Stage 2, located in Alexis Street. There is before and after school care provision available. At KS1 this is provided by our in-house club and at KS2 is run by Fit for Sport. Spaces for either of these are limited. We strive to instill the attitude of being able to communicate our thoughts and ideas clearly so others can understand them as it is one of the most important life skills. This was one of the most common requests by the pupils at St James', we care about, and place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of expressing thoughts respectfully and clearly. We work hard to help our pupils understand the importance of understanding others, respecting their views, even if they may differ from our own, and having empathy and respect for all. As a Church of England school, we explicitly teach and encourage tolerance of other faiths, cultures, and customs and celebrate these continuously. We aim for all of our children to learn at the pace that is right for them and pride ourselves in sending our Year 6 children to secondary school with the basic skills in Reading, Writing, Communication, and Mathematics. We believe with a solid grounding in these key subjects, any bars to future learning, as life-long learners, will be removed. St. Hugh's School owes its origin to the Forbes family who founded it in 1925, and it was due to their energy and vision that the school has been able to expand in the last eighty years. St. Hugh's, administered by a forward-thinking Governing Body, became a Charitable Trust in 1962 and has continued to prosper over the years. We are very proud that we are a truly independent prep school, preparing children for a wide range of senior schools for transfer at both eleven and thirteen.
