Jakarta Theological Seminary (JTS) is the oldest university-level theological seminary in Indonesia, located at the center of the capital of the republic. Jakarta Theological Seminary (JTS) was pioneered by Dr. Hendrik Kraemer and founded in 1934. Prof. Dr. Theodor Müller-Krüger became the first principal of the school. From the beginning, he had emphasized the need of developing a theologian in loco (local theology) in Indonesia, especially through this seminary. Since its beginning, JTS had felt it necessary to take a key role in developing theological thought that will enable the church to respond to the continually changing situations it faces while, on the other hand, to be able to develop theological thought that guides Indonesia’s journey, by the hopes of all people. Until today, we are continuing this tradition of developing theologia in loco (theology in context). The school was supported by several churches in existence at that time, among others the Protestant Church in Indonesia (De Protestantse Kerk in Nederlands- Indié) and the Batak Protestant Christian Church (Huria Kristen Batak Protestant). Eventually, the number of supporting churches increased to sixteen, plus the Communion of the Churches in Indonesia (CCI or PGI) representing all members besides the 14 churches supporting the seminary directly. Lecturers and students came from many different denominations and thus the seedbed of the ecumenical movement in Indonesia was planted. Our students come from approximately 30 church synods. Our master’s and doctoral programs enjoy the trust of many theological schools for training and preparing their future lecturers or improving the quality of those who are already in service. Through its graduate studies programs as well as through its participation in the South East Asia Graduate School of Theology (SEAGST), until 2012, JTS has produced around 200 masters and 50 doctors of theology. Starting with 7 students, the ladies were the school’s first teachers. They multi-tasked as teachers, office staff, school administrators, researchers, and nannies. Those not actively involved in the school constantly updated the group on the latest trends and best practices in education. As a group they enjoyed preparing lessons, making learning materials, reading, playing, and cooking with the students. Those were memorable days for the ladies. When it was time to establish the elementary school the ladies believed that the school should prepare the students to become future leaders, educate morally upright individuals, good communicators, deeply rooted in the country’s culture and heritage with a compassionate heart. Our school runs from Playgroup up to Senior High School and our students come mostly from the Bogor, Sentul, and Cibubur areas. Bus service is available to and from most locations. Two American mothers, married to Indonesians founded Pelangi in 2006 they also had a background in education and non-profit management. These parents wanted to start a school for their mixed heritage children in the place they called home, Ubud. The vision was to create an inclusive, bilingual school, catering to mixed children as well as an ex-pat and Indonesian children. The aim was that Pelangi would be a place where mixed kids, their Indonesian cousins, and their international friends could all feel equally secure. Pelangi planned to enroll 75% full-tuition-paying students, and 25% low-income scholarship recipients, ensuring cultural and economic diversity. The aim was also to provide a school in the local area of Ubud without children having to endure long journeys to the south of the island to schools outside their local community. Today over 150 children attend Pelangi School and we have evolved into a respected bi-lingual international standard school with a distinct community feel, providing a high standard of education to its multicultural students. Our cohort of students represents 32 nationalities from across the globe. The staff team of 40 is lead by a core team of experienced western and Indonesian educators and includes administrative professionals as well as operational staff. The original Pelangi vision is still strong and we pride ourselves on being a school where Balinese, Indonesian, and the international expatriate community co-exist together as one family.
