Clongowes Wood College is a leading boarding school set in beautiful surroundings, thirty kilometers from Dublin in the heart of the Co. Kildare countryside. A Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, Clongowes strives to support students in their growth towards a greater understanding and awareness of their faith and the part that this plays in their lives. We are a home from home for 450 boys from all over Ireland and abroad.
Since 1814, Clongowes graduates have become leaders in the areas of business, sport, politics, and the arts. Our warm and happy school puts the care and nurturing of each student at the heart of everything we do.
Clongowes boarding school is a special place that provides an all-around education in a dynamic living and learning community. Our facilities are exemplary with every opportunity given to each student to develop, grow and learn to fulfill his potential.
Each year Clongowes welcomes students from all over the world to join our seven-day boarding community and we value the cultural diversity that international students bring to life at the college.
We encourage each family to visit Clongowes and in addition, we use Skype as an ideal way to communicate with those interested in joining the school. Whilst in Clongowes our international students must have a guardian that lives in Ireland. This may be a family member or friend.
International students will study for the Irish state exams, namely the Junior Certificate and the Leaving Certificate whilst in Clongowes. Boys sit the Junior Certificate at the end of the third year and the Leaving Certificate at the end of the sixth year. The Junior Certificate typically consists of 10 broad-ranging subjects whilst the Leaving Certificate allows for specialization across 7 subjects. The Irish Leaving Certificate is widely accepted for entry to universities around the world.
Academic achievement is central to Clongowes and our outstanding results in State Examinations and in securing third-level places across Ireland, the UK, Europe, and beyond speak for themselves. Academic standards are high in Clongowes with points averages achieved in recent years shown below.
Academic life at Clongowes spans six years and is marked by two State Examinations – the Junior Certificate in the third year (Grammar) and the Leaving Certificate in the sixth year (Rhetoric).
We work hard to create an environment in which all students can fulfill their potential, teaching a mostly traditional curriculum that is both broad and balanced. Students have the opportunity to pursue a range of subject areas depending on their interests and abilities. Both academic achievement and diligence are rewarded.
Class sizes are small with careful monitoring of progress, regular reporting, and excellent communication channels between Academic Year Heads and parents.
The College’s Mission Statement speaks of educating our pupils according to the best traditions and highest standards of Jesuit schooling and the values of the Gospel and this is a succinct expression of what we are hoping to achieve in Clongowes. Each one of our boys is valued and encouraged. We aim to create an open, happy, stimulating, mutually respectful community environment in which young people can develop the full range of their talents and abilities in a balanced, integrated, and generous way.
The statement further stresses the criterion of excellence, which we apply to all aspects of life in the school, as well as our special concern to foster a sense of values and a commitment to the service of others. We are pledged to an ever-renewed faith, which actively promotes the struggle for greater justice in the world. Traditional values are at the heart of the College’s community, which, at the same time, is forward-thinking and vibrant as we seek to meet the challenges of a changing world.
The profile of our ideal Clongowes’ graduate is someone open to growth, intellectually competent, socially able, culturally aware, physically developed, inspired by the values of the Gospel, flexible and adaptive, actively concerned about justice and peace, committed to striving for excellence and having a sense of belonging to the Church and its mission.
Facilities for living and learning at Clongowes are second to none. Significant investment in recent years has resulted in the expansion of our learning facilities such as the state-of-the-art Science, Art, and Technology Building. Our 500-acre campus in the Kildare countryside offers unparalleled opportunities for sport and leisure.
