Illinois College, the first College in the state to conduct classes and grant a baccalaureate degree, sustains a 180-year heritage of excellence in the liberal arts. The events and characters that tell our story are extraordinary. The Rev. John M. Ellis, a Presbyterian missionary in the East, saw the need for a "seminary of learning" in Illinois's new state. His plans drew the attention of Congregational students at Yale University, and seven of them, in one of the famous "Yale Bands," came westward to help found the College. The first president of Illinois College was Edward Beecher. He left his position at the Park Street Church in Boston and firmly imbued the new College with New England traditions and academic foundations. His sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of the influential anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, visited the campus, and his brother, Henry Ward Beecher, preached and lectured here. Beecher Hall, the first college building in Illinois, was built in 1829 and is still used today.

This means virtually any student who attends Illinois Wesleyan can afford to study abroad. This opportunity is something we encourage students to experience while at Illinois Wesleyan. Undergraduate research is a hallmark of Illinois Wesleyan, and the Eckley program is just one of many sponsored programs that take place during the school year and over the summer. As an exclusively undergraduate university, students have greater access to research opportunities because they do not compete with graduate students. The Action Research Center is a unique experiential-learning center that matches students with a wide array of community, governmental and corporate organizations where students work independently and side-by-side with professionals to conduct research, develop new initiatives, create strategic plans, and more. There are many different ways to learn more about Illinois Wesleyan University. If you are just getting started, you might want to fill out our online request form to send you information about majors, activities, athletics, etc. We can add you to our mailing list. Another great source of information is your personal admissions counselor. You can meet with your counselor at your high school, local college fair, or on campus, or you can contact your counselor via phone or email. The Hart Career Center's primary services to students involve career guidance, internship facilitation, graduate school advising, and job search assistance. A wide variety of career-related events are coordinated throughout the year to assist students in these four areas. Our students have the opportunity to do original research at the undergraduate level, collaborating with faculty who are at the top of their fields. Because Illinois Wesleyan is an entirely undergraduate institution, students are offered research and creative opportunities without competition from graduate students. They develop close relationships with faculty who love to teach and engage students in their research and scholarly work. Check out some of the work that has resulted from faculty mentorship of students in the IWU Digital Commons. Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in 1850 by a diverse group of 30 civic and religious leaders who established "an Institution of learning of Collegiate grade." When a sponsor was needed, the founders gained support from the United Methodist Church, which is how "Wesleyan" was added to the original name, "Illinois University." The University's relationship with the church has evolved over the years. While maintaining its Methodist affiliation, true to its founding roots, Illinois Wesleyan continues to be a diverse and inclusive community, independent in its governance.

The college honors its roots and its affiliation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. At the same time, Augustana's rich liberal arts environment is enhanced by diversity. Augustana continues to do what it has always done — challenge and prepare students for leadership and service lives in a complex, ever-changing world. Many studio art majors prepare for graduate work in a specific art genre or a career in art administration or education, art therapy, medical illustration, or museum work. Some students double-major or minor in art history, psychology, biology, education, or business. Art-related internships are available to integrate these areas, and faculty advisors work with students to help them apply their talents to future goals. Graphic design majors and minors have launched their careers in museum marketing and design for news and industry. Art education students are employed in public and private schools. Besides choosing theatre as a vocation, studying in theatre arts — combined with a solid liberal arts foundation — promotes skills that apply to many professions, including public relations, arts administration, broadcast journalism, marketing, advertising, law, government, communications, and arts education. Augustana graduates have completed Ph.D. and M.F.A. programs in theatre history, acting, directing, set design, theatre technology, costume design, and lighting design. Recent Augustana theatre alumni have built successful careers as talent agents, regional theatre performers, television and film actors, independent film producers, lighting designers, sound technicians, directors, stage managers, and teachers at the secondary and college levels. Augustana theatre students have more opportunities to be involved than at many undergraduate schools: besides actors, designers, and technicians, students may be stage managers, directors, and playwrights who collaborate on productions with faculty every season. Theatre arts majors also can be dramaturgs, conducting the historical and contextual research for mainstage productions. Music students prepare for their careers through carefully planned coursework in a strong liberal arts curriculum, individual advising, career internships, public performances, and other professional experience. Music education students gain teaching and conducting experience in their coursework and area schools with cooperating teachers. Many students teach at the S.B.C. Music and Arts Academy, a local program offering reduced-price lessons to promising students. Recent music graduates have entered graduate programs at the Boston Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory, Northwestern, and Michigan and Southern California universities.
  4. Illinois Institute of Technology is a private, technology-focused research university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, applied technology, and law. One of 21 institutions that comprise the Association of Independent Technological Universities (AITU), Illinois Tech, offers exceptional preparation for professions that require technological sophistication, an innovative mindset, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Undergraduates study in six of IIT's eight academic divisions. Students are encouraged—and even required—to take courses from across the various programs to complete their degrees. If you do not have a planned area of study before entering, you can choose an Undecided path among Armour College of Engineering, College of Science, or General Undecided. IIT's eight colleges offer study options that give you maximum flexibility to achieve your goals. IIT offers traditional master's and doctoral programs (thesis required), professional master's programs (no thesis required), dozens of certificate specializations, dual-degree plans, and short-term executive and professional packages. Some or all of your graduate study may be completed online. Illinois Institute of Technology is a community that values and respects its members. We appreciate that our faculty, staff, students, alumni/ae, and trustees come from many backgrounds and parts of the world. We embrace the contributions that differences offer. We are committed to providing a working and learning environment where all students and all faculty members and staff can realize their full potential. We strive to have a diverse culture of unity, inclusivity, equity, and respect at this university. I expect everyone in our community to treat one another with respect and dignity regardless of gender, race, background, country of origin, religious affiliation, immigration status, orientation, or any other such descriptor. As a community, we must be clear that it is intolerable to allow anyone to be bullied or demeaned or shamed because of their ideas, decisions, background, characteristics, or particular circumstances. To expand upon the commitment to diversity in its Statement on Community, Inclusion, and Diversity, Illinois Tech's Community, Inclusion and Diversity Committee has adopted a document entitled Building Community and Fostering Diversity. This document establishes a set of ten principles aimed at building and maintaining a civil, respectful, and inclusive Illinois Tech community. Illinois Tech offers countless research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students—from on-campus work in professors' labs to national and internationally funded research programs. Students at Illinois Tech can take advantage of our small, private university and find unparalleled access to challenging, thought-provoking research opportunities. Our focus on technology means you will be supplementing your education with research experiences in fields where significant innovation is taking place—and in areas with profound societal implications. To explore the current research opportunities for students at Illinois Tech or assistance with a project proposal, contact your college or school, your faculty advisor, or a faculty member whose research interests you. In spring 2008, an exciting new chapter of IIT history was launched as the Board of Trustees enthusiastically endorsed plans for a university-wide planning process to reestablish the university as a significant force in higher education. That plan, Many Voices, One Vision: 2010-2014, helped focus the institution's initiatives and strengthen its infrastructure—and it is now time to move the university forward into a new era of accomplishment and excellence... In 1890, when advanced education was often reserved for society's elite, Chicago minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus delivered what came to be known as the "Million Dollar Sermon." From the pulpit of his South Side church, near the site Illinois Institute of Technology now occupies, Gunsaulus said that with a million dollars, he could build a school where students of all backgrounds could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society. Inspired by Gunsaulus' vision, Philip Danforth Armour, Sr. (1832-1901) gave $1 million to found the Armour Institute—and Armour, his wife, Malvina Belle Ogden Armour (1842-1927), and their son J. (Jonathan) Ogden Armour (1863-1927) continued to support the university in its early years. When Armour Institute opened in 1893, it offered professional courses in engineering, chemistry, architecture, and library science. Illinois Tech was created in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute. Located on the west side of Chicago, Lewis Institute, established in 1895 by the estate of hardware merchant and investor Allen C. Lewis, offered liberal arts and science and engineering courses for both men and women. At separate meetings held by their respective boards on October 26, 1939, Armour and Lewis's trustees voted to merge the two colleges. A Cook County circuit court decision on April 23, 1940, solidified the merger. Some of the most famous buildings in the world, designed by legendary architects, are located on the IIT Main Campus in Chicago. S. R. Crown Hall, an elegant steel-and-glass National Historic Landmark, is a marvel of engineering and simplicity by former IIT professor and Architecture dean Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Elevated trains run through the Rem Koolhaas-designed McCormick Tribune Campus Center. And IIT alumnus Helmut Jahn's State Street Village is one of the on-campus places to live. The Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship will be added to Morton Park on Illinois Tech's Main Campus. The Kaplan Institute will house the university's internationally-renowned Institute of Design activities as well as IPRO, Entrepreneurship Academy, Leadership Academy, Jules Knapp Entrepreneurship Center, and Idea Shop.

The Graduate School is excited to be included in your pursuit of graduate education and is committed to supporting you necessary to ensure a smooth admission process. Graduate admissions is a two-part process at EIU. It involves an application to the Graduate School and application to the graduate program if you are seeking a degree in a particular discipline. If you need to enroll in coursework without applying to a graduate program, please select "non-degree" on the admission application. The International Student Scholarship was established by the Board of Trustees to assist students from other countries attending EIU. Awards are competitive and designed to promote cultural exchange and diversity. Awards may be granted based on one or both of the following factors: financial need and academic excellence. The scholarship pays partial tuition for minimum full-time enrollment in EIU courses. Fees, field trips, continuing education delivery charges, travel, living expenses, and other personal expenses are not covered. If you're currently in high school or have never attended college, applying for undergraduate admission as an incoming freshman is for you. Suppose you've already earned a bachelor's degree and are interested in furthering your education with a graduate degree or second bachelor's degree. In that case, you'll want to apply for admission to The Graduate School. Are you looking to make a move to EIU from a community college or another university? Transfer students make up 35 percent of our undergraduate population, and our Office of Transfer Relations is here to ensure a smooth transition. EIU is proud to be an ideal home for students from outside the United States. If you fit that bill, you can apply for international admission. Not all potential students are high school seniors or community college transfers, which is why our B.A. in General Studies program exists. It is specifically designed to meet mature adults' educational goals in a format and structure compatible with adult responsibilities. Registered nurses (RNs) who are already licensed to practice and newly graduated non-licensed ADN's who are ready to advance to a BSN degree from EIU should apply to our R.N. to B.S. in Nursing program. The Organizational and Professional Development (OPD) bachelor's degree program revolves around a distinct field of academic study focused on understanding the human aspects of professional organizations, aspects such as people, processes, and practices. Did you attend EIU in the past without ever getting a chance to finish up your undergraduate degree? If one or more semesters have passed since you last enrolled, you can apply for readmission to the university and get yourself that diploma. Eastern Illinois University, located in Charleston's east-central Illinois community, provides the best undergraduate and graduate education of any public university in the region.EIU is within three hours from Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, and within easy driving distance of Champaign-Urbana. The fundamental promise at Illinois for nearly 150 years has been to provide our undergraduate students with truly transformative educational experiences. Whether these experiences occur in the classroom, in the surrounding community, or around the globe, our students leave this campus with the skills, knowledge, and drive to become leaders in their fields and lead lives of impact in the world. Each year we welcome more than 32,000 undergraduate students across our nine undergraduate divisions – offering nearly 5,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study and awarding about 7,000 new degrees each spring. Learn to dance from a Broadway veteran, hone your writing skills with a Pulitzer Prize winner, learn about engineering from a MacArthur genius, or learn physics from a Nobel Prize winner. Illinois can help make your dreams a reality. We have 16 colleges and instructional units that provide more than 150 undergraduate programs and more than 100 graduate and professional programs. At Illinois, our research drives life-changing innovations, permeates our classrooms, and fuels our outreach. Illinois research fuels new ideas, new companies, and even new industries. We are among the nation's research powerhouses – for the last six years running, we have been awarded more NSF funding than any other university. Our faculty have developed many of the technologies that enable modern electronic devices, pioneered agricultural practices that feed the world, and shaped the government policies that protect the vulnerable in our society. Illinois has more than 500 active institutional partnerships representing more than 50 countries. Last year, we had more than 10,000 international students attend Illinois, hailing from more than 110 countries. And, more than 2,000 students study abroad annually. The University of Illinois is a public research university, ultimately responsible for Illinois and the Illinois General Assembly citizens. A board of trustees holds authority over the UniversityUniversity. A president is the chief executive officer for the university system. Each of three campuses is headed by a chancellor, vice-chancellors with campuswide responsibilities, and other administrators whose duties are delegated by the chancellor.
  7. Blackburn's mission is unique in higher education. We feature a student-managed work program that reduces the cost of a quality liberal arts education and links that education to skills that apply long after graduation. We are affordable and set students up for success. Not only do we have excellent academics, athletics, student life, and work programs, we do all of this in the context of community. Blackburn students, faculty, staff, and alumni work together to make sure everyone can achieve their goals. You will not be a number on our campus. Blackburn College is one of 7 work colleges in the United States, and the only one with a student-managed work program. What does this mean? You have a chance to build a strong resume, even get management experience, while attending college and reducing your costs because you are not only a student – you are staff! Blackburn offers more than 30 majors, so there is something for every career goal. Moreover, that is where the Office of Career Services comes in. Career Services can help those students who have not declared a significant focus on their search. Using Internet-based career planning tools and various assessments, the career counselor can help students match their strengths and interests with a college degree and, ultimately, with a career goal. Already have a major selected? Career Services can help those students connect their majors to a variety of career options. Career Services can also help students prepare a professional resume, conduct a career search, research graduate school programs, and find graduate assistantships and internships. Career Services hosts several career conferences to help students explore career fields and create networks of professional contacts. Career Services also hosts graduate school representatives on campus to assist students in selecting graduate school programs. Career Services also offers two career classes to help students with career planning and career placement. The Office of Career Services collaborates with three area universities to provide Blackburn students access to career fairs. The Office provides transportation to and from these career fairs. So make the most of your college experience. Have fun, develop a strong work ethic, gain management experience, build a strong resume, and create a career plan to help you gain a professional lifestyle. Join the Blackburn community and let Blackburn College work for you. The Work Program was first implemented in 1913 by Dr. William Hudson as the "Work Plan." The plan was modeled after a program at Park College in Parkville, Missouri. Several years later, students were given leadership responsibility for the program. That leadership responsibility has evolved into an organization run and managed by more than 500 young adults. The purpose of the Work Program has been to instill learning and development, community contribution, and cost reduction for our team members' continued education. We are more than 500 people who provide essential quality services primarily to Blackburn College but also to local businesses, regional nonprofit organizations, sports clubs, law enforcement departments, and virtually every school in the Macoupin County District and surrounding area. We also attend a college that provides us with a quality education applicable in every aspect of our lives, including the jobs we work. The Work Program offers an experience, unlike any other college. While living and working at Blackburn College, students gain valuable professional and interpersonal skills long before setting foot in the real-world. Blackburn College offers a real-world work experience that sets our graduates apart and oddly prepares them by other institutions. Built-in the mid-1960s by student labor, Blackburn's Lumpkin Library is home to the newly developed Lumpkin Learning Commons. After an extensive renovation project during summer 2014, the Commons now features a refurbished lobby, laptops for checkout, and collaborative workspaces. The Learning Commons is open for student and public use year-round, with phases two and three of the renovation process. The services we provide include administrative resources, athletic support, building maintenance, cleaning services, educational assistance, financial management, business and retail management, safety and security, counseling services, food and catering services, graphic design, marketing and communications resources, and research. There is no other college or university in the United States, quite like Blackburn College. Our unique campus culture is the byproduct of the purposeful melding of our nationally acclaimed student-managed Work Program and rigorous liberal arts academic curriculum. The result is a unique living laboratory for learning where the boundaries between job and classroom are blurred, and mentoring from faculty and staff knows no clock. Since 1913, Blackburn's student-managed Work Program has made the dream of a college education affordable for thousands of first-generation students by keeping the cost of our private liberal arts education within their reach. Over the years, our students have built Blackburn – brick by brick. Blackburn enjoys the distinction of being the only college campus in the United States to have been primarily built by its students. Today our students carry on this tradition by staffing mission-critical jobs as plumbers, carpenters, painters, landscapers, cooks, servers, administrators, computer technicians, janitors, graphic artists, security officers, assistant coaches, tutors, and teaching assistants. At Blackburn, students are fully vested in every aspect of their college experience, whether it is success in the classroom, managing or staffing their campus job, or governing the institution's life.

Your grades, achievements, and activities during high school typically determine the scholarships for which you are eligible. Often, the organization or individual donor providing the scholarship wishes to reward or encourage specific characteristics or behaviors such as strong academic credentials, leadership, community service activities, or plans to enter a particular profession. Scholarships come from a variety of sources. Some are available through Illinois State University. Our ScholarshipFinder can also help you find awards within the University. Professional organizations, social clubs, employers, community organizations, and individual donors provide many more. Each scholarship provider determines when and how they will select the recipient, whether or not the award is renewable year after year, when the Money will be awarded, and how it should be used. The more often you are searching and applying for scholarships, the less likely you will miss something you could have qualified. Most scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. Usually, that means applications are accepted in the fall or spring, winners are notified a few weeks to a few months later, and the actual awards are made the next fall. Unfortunately, because of this timing, if you are trying to cover an outstanding bill you have right now, scholarships are unlikely to help. Student Access and Accommodation Services is proud to have the privilege each year to offer scholarships to students with disabilities and medical/mental health conditions at Illinois State University. The scholarships offered are due to donors' generosity who has a passion for encouraging our students with disabilities and medical/mental health conditions and providing the opportunities to realize their personal and professional goals. The realization of these goals will lead our students to become alumni of Illinois State University. They possess the skills to become successful individuals capable of making contributions to every facet of our society. We offer many programs and services to support our diverse campus population. Forget the days of undergrad education, where general classes were taken to earn credit hours. Every second of ICO’s 4-year program is optometry-focused. Our students receive an unmatched clinical experience, including hands-on patient care in the IEI beginning in their very first year. Of course, we know that being a doctor extends beyond eye care. ICO offers courses in financial literacy, practice management, and other real-world aspects of optometry. Our top-notch resources expose students to tomorrow’s technologies and modes of practice. In addition to a rich clinical education, ICO gives its students a firm foundation rooted in biomedical science. Introductory biomedical courses are spread across our program's first two years: human anatomy, immunology, and pharmacology. Interactive laboratories complement many of these. From basic human sciences to high-level ophthalmic studies, every ICO course is presented through the lens of primary eye care. Our curriculum visits optics, ocular anatomy, physiology, visual perception, neuroanatomy, sensory aspects of vision, and color vision. Thus, every moment ICO students spend in a classroom is a moment spent preparing for real life. Students gain high-quality experiences in primary eye care, pediatric optometry, binocular vision, low vision rehabilitation, contact lenses, emergency care, and ocular disease in the clinical program. The clinical program is student-centered, beginning in the lecture-laboratory setting and advancing to a one-to-one relationship between students and patients. ICO’s faculty works both in the lecture hall and in the clinic. So, students receive supportive, personalized education in every environment.

  22. View full university
