- The International School of Florence (ISF) is one of the oldest international schools in Europe, culminating in the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the surest path to accessing the broadest choice of colleges and universities throughout the world. As a non-profit educational institution, ISF embodies the values of the Renaissance. How? By striving for academic excellence while developing our students’ creativity, intellectual curiosity, innovative spirit, and appreciation for beauty. Why? Because developing the whole person is at the heart of our mission. ISF offers challenging and internationally recognized academic programs alongside a rich extracurricular offering. At ISF – in our Renaissance villas and Tuscan setting – students are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow through a focus on their potential today. Capturing 65 years of tradition in Florence, the International School of Florence (ISF) is one of the oldest international schools in Europe. ISF is an independent, non-profit, coeducational, college preparatory day school for students in grades PS-12, with innovative academic programs, the arts, athletics, and a community that celebrates the dignity and worth of each individual. The school, with a current enrollment of approximately 480 students on two campuses, is comprised of families from over thirty countries, including about 40% of Italian Citizens. Paul Burk-Mahony and Horace Gibson co-founded the school in Rome, in 1952. Eleven years later, the school transferred to a farmhouse on Via del Guarlone just outside of Florence. In 1968, the school moved again to Torre Bellosguardo and remained there until 1980 when it transferred to the present Junior School location at Via del Carota in Bagno a Ripoli. The IB Diploma Programme was introduced in 1983. 20 years later, in 2003, the school was renamed the International School of Florence. Emerging student growth, and consequent space restrictions, caused The Board to create a Middle and High School at Villa Torri di Gattaia, a 13th-century villa immersed in the countryside just outside of Florence. These facilities incorporate classroom space, science labs, a library, art studio, computer labs. In the 65 intervening years, it has grown and changed dramatically, developing into a model international school with programs offered such as the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Programme (grades Pre-School through 5), an integrated Italian equivalency program (grades 1 through ? for our host country students who wish to prepare for and take the Italian Terza Media exam, and the challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for high schools students. The IB Diploma Program is recognized for admission to universities in Italy, the U.S., the U.K, and countries around the world. ISF is fully accredited both by the Council of International Schools and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. ISF aims to provide a caring learning environment that promotes personal, social, and academic growth through challenging and engaging programs, to develop respectful, responsible students who strive to have a positive impact on others and the world around them. The International School of Florence is committed to: Providing a safe and healthy school environment. Encouraging intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and enthusiasm for learning as a lifelong pursuit. Enabling students to realize their highest potential. Providing students with depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding, and skills in a broad range of academic subjects. Building confidence, self-esteem, and leadership through curricular and extracurricular activities, including athletics, the arts, and community service programs. Upholding appropriate standards for personal behavior. Nurturing intellectual, social and physical growth while identifying and meeting each student’s developmental needs. Recognizing creative expression and promoting an appreciation of beauty. Developing positive moral and social values for personal fulfillment and the good of the community. Fostering understanding and respect for diverse cultures and the differences between them. Encouraging appreciation of each student’s heritage. Promoting competence in English and at least one other language. Continuing to attract and retain exceptional staff. Ensuring financial sustainability into the future. View full school

Our school aims to ensure that every child reaches their potential and has as many opportunities in life as possible. We aim to achieve this through a broad education focused on academic success, excellence in terms of care and welfare, and ensuring their talents and achievements are recognized. Our school is situated in Walton in the North of Liverpool. We were founded in 1927 by Florence Elizabeth Melly who dedicated her life to serving education in Liverpool. At Florence Melly Community Primary, we are committed to providing inspirational and innovative highest quality learning experiences for all our pupils. We aim to create an environment that promotes curiosity, love, and thirst for learning and empower our children to become independent, lifelong learners. Our children are the ‘jewels in our crown’ and we ensure every child is valued, challenged, and encouraged to achieve their full potential. We aim to equip our children with not the minimum statutory requirements of the curriculum but to prepare them for their role as active, responsible citizens. Our wide range of additional learning opportunities provides the opportunity for our children to learn from other cultures, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and appreciate what they have. We offer a rich curriculum, a curriculum that is based around our six core values. These sit at the very heart of everything we do at Florence Melly and help prepare pupils at our school for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. At Florence Melly Community Primary, we are committed to providing inspirational and innovative teaching and the highest quality learning experiences for all our pupils. We believe that if you can dream it, you can do it: Determination Resilience Empowerment Appreciation Motivation Safety We aim to equip children not only with the statutory requirements of the curriculum but to prepare them for their role as active, responsible citizens. Our wide range of additional learning opportunities provides an opportunity for the children to learn from other cultures, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and value each individual. We celebrate success and build on disappointment to develop resilient young people of the future. At Florence Melly, we offer a curriculum that is balanced and broadly based. A curriculum which: promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development of pupils at the school and society, and prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. Phonics in the EYFS is taught using a combination of Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics. In KS1, phonics is taught. Our classroom offers a welcoming, safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment where children learn through playing and exploring. Our environment allows children to develop self-esteem, independence, confidence, and social learning skills. We work in partnership to ensure a smooth transition from home to our setting. We hold a Family Library Time Session once a week and Stay and Play Sessions throughout the year to build on these relationships, share good practice and build confidence. We provide equal opportunities for all and plan appropriate next steps following children’s interests. At Florence Melly Primary School, we often check phonic development within our approach to the assessment of reading. This screening forms part of our overall assessment procedure. However, there are several things that parents can do to support early reading skill development. View full school

- The University of Florence is an important and influential center for research and higher training in Italy, with 1,800 lecturers and internal research staff, 1,600 technical and administrative staff, and over 1,600 research assistants and doctoral students. It offers a wide range of study programs at various levels and in all areas of knowledge. 126 Degree courses (First and Second Cycle, corresponding to Bachelor's and Master's Degrees) organized in 10 Schools, with a population of about 51,000 enrolled students, one-fourth of which come from outside of Tuscany. There are over 9,000 degrees awarded each year in Florence. According to the alumni data, the percentage of students in the workforce one year after their First Level degree is above the national average. The University of Florence has a natural international vocation, and the development of internationalization is one of its strategic priorities. It is one of the largest and most productive public research systems in Italy. This result is accomplished thanks to the number of permanent and temporary researchers working in a wide range of disciplinary and scientific fields and the numerous junior scientists in training. It is also due to intensive participation in research programs of national and international relevance and the significant scientific results achieved. External funds support the research and knowledge transfer activities. This combination of factors qualifies the Florentine institution as a modern research university and accounts for its excellent national and world rankings. Researchers at the University of Florence operate within 24 different departments. They have at their disposal approximately 40 research structures comprising inter-departmental and inter-university centers as well as specialized research, knowledge transfer, and advanced training centers. In recent years the University of Florence has increasingly consolidated its ventures in the field of knowledge transfer: from the filing of patents to the setting up of joint workshops with businesses, through to participation in spin-off companies. Knowledge transfer activities are coordinated by CSAVRI (Centro di Servizi di Ateneo per la Valorizzazione della Ricerca e la gestione dell'Incubatore universitario), the centre for the enhancement of research and management of the university's incubator. The President is the legal representative of the University: he has a political role, presides over the Academic Senate and the Board of Administrators, and supervises the running of the University. The Statute describes in detail the structure of the governing bodies. The 24 Departments are the vital organizing structures that carry out all research, teaching, and training activities involving knowledge and innovation transfer. The Academic Senate represents all components of the University. It counts 29 members: the President, who chairs it, ten department directors, ten lecturers and researchers representing the five disciplinary areas, three representatives of the technical/administrative staff, the readers and the language experts five students. The Board of Administrators is the ruling body of the University. It counts 11 members: the President who chairs it, three external and five internal members, two student representatives. The Senate nominates the three external members. A dedicated committee selects candidacies. The teaching and research staff is divided into full professors, associate professors, and researchers. Access to these categories is through national scientific competitions based on qualifications and exams for researchers and associate professors and based on full professors' qualifications.
