  7. It was estimated that a week’s worth of the New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to receive in a lifetime in the 18th century. The US Department of Labor estimates that today’s learners will have had 10 to 14 jobs by their 38th birthday. The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. We have the task of preparing students today for jobs that do not exist yet. What will determine our children’s future success is education, the capacity and willingness to learn, leadership, and the ability to work well with others. Our world is changing, and the education and skills necessary to prosper must change as well. Our children also face many challenges that did not affect children as much ten or twenty years ago. Social networks, pervasive media, advertisements, 24/7 Internet access, and cyber-bullying are many of the issues that today’s students have to deal with on top of the schoolwork, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, and the pressures of growing up. It is up to both parents and educators to help guide our children through these challenges and succeed. Our staff and teachers do not just teach the curriculum; they serve as role models and help students develop life skills. We will give our students in-depth skills in various subjects, develop their social and life skills, and help them develop the strength of mind and character to succeed in life. Our vision aligns with shifts in the global economy, society, and environment, which animate our mission and our values, Discovery uses creativity, innovation, and a desire to challenge our students, both in what and how we teach, Social group engagement – Independent learning skills – Problem-solving capabilities. Discovery Academy must embrace these principles and innovate to address shifts in the global economy, society, and environment that require individuals to grapple with complex problems, pursue more fluid and flexible career pathways, and collaboratively create change. This course builds on students’ previous education and language knowledge to introduce them to the English language and adjust to the diversity in their new environment. They will engage in short conversations using basic English language structures, and simple sentence patterns read short adapted texts and write phrases and short sentences. The course also provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to begin to adapt to their new lives in Canada. This course extends students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English for everyday and academic purposes. 9. Discovery International School was established in 2010 in Nagakute City on the eastern border of Nagoya City. Our Director is a father of bi-cultural children and a qualified early childhood professional. Discovery International School provides English-based, research-supported instruction to children of all cultural and linguistic backgrounds, with individualized attention to all areas of growth: personal, social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and linguistic. We dedicate ourselves to respect for children’s rights and voices. We share with children the responsibility of determining paths to new knowledge and holistic growth. We commit ourselves to continuous professional learning in the fields of early childhood and language development. Our preschool curriculum provides ample time for indoor and outdoor play. Play experiences help teachers construct subject-integrated, developmentally supportive learning projects with the children. Project development is documented as it occurs, with emphasis on children’s growth of understanding through their own words and actions. Parents are allowed and encouraged to join us at any time. Initial weeks are dedicated to helping children become familiar with routines and our English-language environment. First language support is provided. Parents are welcome to attend with their children until they are emotionally settled. Discovery International School provides your child with a modern, research-supported approach to children's learning--in English! Our teachers are licensed and experienced educators. Our curriculum and environment are carefully designed to maximize language development, along with all areas of learning. At Discovery, your child's voice is of greatest importance. Your child's questions and wondering serve as the starting points for engaging in deep learning projects, where teachers assist your child in finding and sharing their answers. Academic subjects are combined to create real-life research and learning. As we delve into personally meaningful topics, English is acquired naturally and proficiently. At Discovery, children are the speakers and thinkers teachers are guides and mentors. We encourage children to share thinking through multiple languages: speaking, writing, painting, sculpture, drama, song, dance... the 'Hundred Languages of Children!' We provide children with the English they need to communicate these thoughts orally and in writing. Communication thrives as your child can feel at ease to share knowledge, opinions, and feelings in an environment free of pressure or judgment! Literacy development is completely individualized in our literacy workshops. Teachers work with children one-to-one and in small groupings to develop the complete range of literacy skills: comprehension, prediction, inferencing, word, and letter-sound decoding, and much much more! We customize the learning of skills so that every child gets just what they need to continue expanding their understandings of reading and writing! Your child's pursuits are carefully documented through photographic and video journeys. Classroom documentation allows children and teachers to revisit the learning process, reflect on new understandings, and find new questions to pursue. Our secure online documentation allows parents to view their child's doings at school. Parents are also welcome to join lessons at any time! Additionally, we host parent-teacher conferences twice a year to share our understandings of your child's interests and growth.Tuesdays ~ Saturdays, 3:00 ~ 6:30 (120 & 180 minute lessons). Communication thrives as your child can feel at ease to share knowledge, opinions, and feelings in an environment free of pressure or judgment. At Discovery, children are encouraged to freely explore with art and music materials: paints, pastels, clay, fabrics, beads, instruments, microphones, and more. Teachers model techniques and usage of tools, encouraging children to use the arts to communicate ideas and emotions. Children learn to reflect on and revise artistic works to achieve clarity of expression. Physical health affects brain development, emotions, the ability to concentrate, and many other areas of growth. At Discovery, time is regularly scheduled for outdoor play. Indoors, we provide plentiful free-choice play and pursue music and movement activities daily. Personal safety and health are always top priorities. Positive experiences in early childhood are crucial to life-long success and happiness. Learning and development thrive when learning pursuits, rules, and meanings are open to experimentation and negotiation. Young children learn actively and socially, through play, debate, conflict, and clarification. To assist each child’s individual development, we strive to faithfully know and listen to each child. We focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, on "Yes!" rather than "No." Discovery is a place where your child will positively develop her voice, self-image, and life-long skills for success. It is a place where your child is assisted in finding answers to his important questions, learning language and concepts along the way. It is a place where growth is carefully documented and joyfully celebrated, and where the whole family is welcome in a loving, home-like environment. Discovery International School is a small, family-operated and family-oriented, not-for-profit learning community. We invite all of you--children and parents alike!--to join us in learning together in many strong and positive ways.

  12. WELCOME TO DISCOVERY BAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (DBIS): THIS WEBSITE WILL ALLOW YOU TO GET A REAL PICTURE OF WHAT THE SCHOOL CAN PROVIDE. I ALSO HOPE THAT YOU COME AND VISIT DBIS IN PERSON AS WE WOULD BE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME YOU. DBIS is very different from other international schools in Hong Kong. Centered in the wonderful community of Discovery Bay on the beautiful island of Lantau, the school derives much strength from its tranquil location and its surrounding active community. Establishing and maintaining strong, caring, respectful, and supportive personal relationships is key to the DBIS ethos. Our approach allows DBIS teachers to work in tandem with supportive and aspirational parents in focusing upon the individual. It also allows students to concentrate on the challenging task of learning, growing, and developing as individuals. Our students enjoy a broad international curriculum with British characteristics and a distinctive learning journey that begins in Early Years (age 3-5), progresses to Primary school (age 6-11), and culminates in Secondary school (age 12-18). The DBIS student experience is characterized by a highly personalized learning environment, small class sizes, creative approaches to teaching and learning, and a broad range of extracurricular activities. In DBIS we focus both in and outside the classroom. We excel in sporting events around Hong Kong as we take part in ISSFHK- the premier athletics championships for International schools and the HK Swim Championships. We also compete in sports abroad, with our participation in The Federation of British International Schools In Asia (FOBISIA) sports championships. As a school, we collectively understand that each individual has their own specific needs, that is why we offer different creative arts to cater to all students. The school participates in the annual ISTA drama festival, which we hosted to great success in early 2017 whilst also hosting a drama production put on by our very own students which only gets better every year. As for music, we participate in the music FOBISIA annually providing students with a chance to explore different musical cultures from across South East Asia. In school, musical lessons are taught by externally hired professionals that offer a range of different instruments to study, which is why our musical department is so highly regarded. We encourage DBIS students to be confident communicators, to be creative, resourceful, and inquisitive. DBIS learners collaborate, share ideas and opinions, and work together in teams. DBIS learners work hard and are proud of their achievements. At the heart of our broad and balanced curriculum are several areas that we feel are essential for students to experience throughout their learning journey. These include problem-solving through mathematics and computing, proficiency in English, development of an additional language, creativity and performance in Music, Art, and Drama, plus health and wellbeing through sport and physical education.
  13. Discovery College is an international community of learners who respect the diversity of experiences and perspectives we each possess. Here, we strive to create an environment that fosters a passion for learning, which enables all students to Grow. Discover. Dream. We have exceptional teachers and staff who provide wonderful classroom programs, which are engaging and fun for students. Discovery College’s diverse student body underscores the importance of international mindedness and the shared spirit of respect that is a tenant of the College’s Guiding Statements. We welcome students from across the Hong Kong community and are proud to help every student achieve his or her very best. In addition to the robust and comprehensive IB curriculum, which includes specialist courses in the performing arts and PE from Year 1, sports and outdoor activities play a major part in the lives of the students at Discovery College. Sports are provided not only through a comprehensive and highly competitive College program, but also through very strong local sports clubs in Discovery Bay. Likewise, co-curricular activities provide students with opportunities to explore new interests across a wide range of areas. The College’s location also provides a strong sense of community for students and staff alike. With no private cars, Discovery Bay is an ideal choice for many families. It is a self-contained residential area with its bus service, including routes to the Sunny Bay MTR station, Tung Chung MTR station, and Hong Kong Airport, as well as a 24-hour ferry service to Central. Its relaxed atmosphere lends itself to a more leisurely pace of Hong Kong living. It is one of the few places in Hong Kong where children can walk, cycle or skate to school. The many ways in which Discovery College supports learning and prepares students for later life are too numerous to list, but I believe you will get a sense of our school community through this website and by reading our biannual Shi Jie Magazine. Discovery College is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and offers the three IB programs: Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students 4-10 years, Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students 11-16 years, and Diploma Programme (DP) for students 16-19 years. DC’s Guiding Statements consist of our Vision Statement (with Guiding Principles) and Powerful Learning Statement, which help to define what is important for us as a school. These are underpinned by the IB Mission, IB Core Values, and IB Learner Profile. At Discovery College we believe that powerful learning and teaching occurs under a shared spirit of respect, which dignifies and prizes our diversity of experiences and perspectives, reaches into our traditions as well as into the future, excites a passion for ongoing inquiry and strives to help all learners reach for enduring excellence. The design of the Discovery College campus respects the context and natural environment surrounding the site. Older residential developments are perching on the hilltops to the south and west. The building form steps down towards the sea with a series of open terraces. The intention was to create a building that blends in and harmonizes with the surrounding natural terrain and minimizes the obstruction of sea views enjoyed over many years by our neighbors. In response to requests from residents, significant redesigning of the structure took place to further reduce the visual impact of the structure.

  20. View full school
