Since its founding in 1928, the Chiba University of Commerce (CUC) has accepted many young people to study here under the educational philosophy of "practical scholarship with high morality" as it started as a school for accounting. The educational content we offer has evolved to nurture people who can respond to both the demands of the times and our changing society. We continue to engage in academic research aimed at finding solutions to the issues faced by our society. CUC inspires its students to become more active, expand their individuality, and develop their abilities. To help them tie together their book learning with real-life experience, they are regularly tested and encouraged to evolve. For every student's future, CUC will continue to evolve, and through practical scholarship, we will continue to nurture people who can carve a path towards their future. As an education and research institution, we see it as our duty to continue working towards finding solutions to our society's problems today. The Chiba University of Commerce was founded to contribute to society by nurturing individuals who have high ethical standards and view the world with an open mind. Founder Ryukichi Endo believed that to reach that goal, it was necessary to spread the idea of "practical scholarship with high morality" - studies useful to society with its ever-expanding social diversity and internationalization. The pillars of that education would be those academic disciplines that allow students to understand and live through the constantly changing regional, national, and global issues. That spirit continues to serve as the foundation of CUC's practical education, which provides young people with the knowledge they need to live in the world today. Chiba University began with five faculties in 1949 as a national university under the new postwar education system. Since then, it has expanded to become a comprehensive university comprised of ten faculties and 11 graduate schools. Since its foundation, Chiba University has aimed to contribute to society through its pioneering education and research. To attain this goal, faculty and staff are encouraged to think outside the box and collaborate across specialties and professions. This open system of faculty-level exchange enables Chiba University to promote its distinctive integrated education and research. In 2004, changes to the education law allowed the national University to become an independent administrative entity. Under our University's motto, "Always Aim Higher," we established a new goal to cultivate human resources capable of assuming roles in a global society. In 2016, we created a new faculty, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to further develop our university mission. One of our new initiatives is the Strategic Priority Research Areas. We 1) offer intensive support to selected six research areas, 2) promote industry-academia-government collaboration, and 3) strengthen social involvement and competitive grant funding, and 4) foster cooperation with domestic and international universities. Chiba University will continue to contribute to society by cultivating human resources, and technology transfer and commercialization of the university research results. Since Chiba University became an independent administrative institution in 2004, we have vigorously promoted enrichment of liberal arts (universal) education and internationalization in our educational activities in the spirit of the University's fundamental principle to "Always aim higher." We have continued our tireless efforts to become a future-oriented comprehensive university that stands out among others in the world through the practice of creative education and research that will lead the world and by vigorously promoting basic research and applied research at a world level while respecting diversity in learning. As the University approaches its third medium-term goal period commencing in 2016, we have formulated a university vision for this period to further our development as a comprehensive university with teaching and research functions of the highest standard. We will do this by accurately identifying various issues humanity faces due to the rapid changes in society in Japan and the world at large, by adequately determining the University's strengths, characteristic features, and potentially based on achievement through initiatives to date. By effectively demonstrating superior research and high-quality teaching capabilities, the University possesses in solving various problems. At Chiba University, our entire university staff is united in its commitment to realizing this vision through the provision of strategic support in creative research areas (which will be one of the University's strengths), creation of next-generation innovation, independent study as independent individuals, and nurturing the development of next-generation human resources who can play key roles in international society. Chiba University was founded in 1949, unifying several regional former national colleges and schools such as Chiba Medical College and Chiba Normal School. Currently, Chiba University consists of nine faculties, the university library, the university hospital, and other educational and research facilities. With 11,109 students in the undergraduate program, it has long been one of Japan's largest universities. As for graduate school, there are about 2,189 students in ten master's programs and 1,243 in nine doctoral programs. Chiba University is proud of its productive faculties and varied courses, the particulars of which will be introduced in the following sections. The University's four campuses, Nishi-Chiba, Inohana, Matsudo, and Kashiwa-no-ha, are ideally located in Chiba Prefecture, an area noted for its industrial, intellectual, and international achievements. In recent decades Chiba has undergone rapid development, which in many ways rivals the neighboring Tokyo Metropolis. Many national projects have been based in Chiba Prefecture, and now Chiba has one of the leading international transport centers (New Tokyo International Airport Narita) and one of the largest business centers in Japan (Makuhari New Metropolitan Area and Nippon Convention Center). Many new academic and industrial complexes for the advanced sciences (The Kazusa DNA Research Institute) are located in Chiba Prefecture. The developments in Chiba today are representative of tomorrow's Japan. Matters occurring in the most progressive parts of Japan, or even in the world, will provide rich materials for research in various aspects of the human, social, industrial, and natural sciences. With the support of the Japanese national government, Chiba University is extending the frontiers of its international activities. The University establishes new cooperative relations with numerous overseas universities and develops an even closer relationship with those with which it has already concluded cooperation agreements. The University has already achieved a high degree of participation in international cooperative research projects. Chiba University presently has a large body of international research scholars and students studying on its various campuses. Chiba Prefectural University of Health Sciences is an up and coming public university, continually adapting to the changing issues in health sciences. Chiba Prefectural University was established in April 2009 due to the groundbreaking merger of the long-established Chiba College of Health and Science with the former Chiba Prefectural College of Allied Medical Sciences. The current four-year undergraduate university has since celebrated six classes of outstanding students, boasting an enrollment of 740 students at its two fully-equipped campuses. We are committed to foster skilled professionals to promote the health and well-being of the communities we serve. We aim to foster those who have mastered professional knowledge and the highest level of trained skills. We value nurturing well-rounded individuals to become the best human resources in the field, with an ethical standard to adapt and actively contribute to the healthcare system in a changing global atmosphere. Our selective program only admits 190 students per year, including ten candidates to the Nursing Department's third year. Chiba Prefecture is undergoing a drastic demographic shift resulting in rapid growth in the aging population. However, the number of healthcare workers trained to cater to local demands is insufficient. The university is committed to providing a service to the community by countering the healthcare labor shortage with the highest possible care level. In 2025, when the post-war baby boomers reach 75, nearly 20 percent of the population will be over 75 years old. We see it as part of our mission to play a significant role in educating and training skilled professionals to promote health and continued care to the elderly. Our students are the future of these new medical and care-giving challenges. We believe that they will be responsible and dependable in their mission to support the senior communities they serve, providing the highest level of care in treating their chronic illnesses. Our graduates will exercise their training in critical thinking and problem-solving skills while demonstrating their freedom of idea exchange to address patients' individual physical and mental needs thoughtfully. The Faculty of Health Sciences aims to prepare highly competent, well-rounded healthcare professionals with high ethical standards and excellent communication skills, providing thorough healthcare services with the most sincere and warm intentions. The Chiba Institute of Technology (CIT) is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary this year. CIT was established to offer engineering education equal in quality to that in Europe and America and raise the industrial capacity of Japan and all of Asia. CIT’s prospectus states: “Cultivate individuals that possess a love of country and the desire to collect knowledge from around the world and lead Japan and the rest of Asia in efforts to contribute to world culture.” This ideal has been passed down to the current age as the school philosophy: “Contributing to world culture through technology.” CIT has gained recognition through its achievements and long history—we are currently the second-oldest institute of technology in Japan after the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the oldest among private institutes of technology. CIT continues to change with the times. From its establishment to Japan’s economic miracle, CIT devoted efforts to education and research that served as the foundation of Japan’s modernization and growth. CIT has carved its path and provided cutting-edge education and research results for seventy-five years. New students are sure to feel CIT’s energy and sense of momentum from the moment they enroll. Further evidence can be found in CIT’s initiatives and achievements last year, several of which are introduced below. CIT reformed its engineering division in April 2016 from a system with three faculties and 11 departments to one with five faculties and 17 departments. After the reform, the number of applicants CIT received was the ninth highest of the 779 universities in Japan. This fact is inspirational since it is proof that CIT has gained even greater recognition among high school students nationwide. Around the same time, Meteor—a camera for observing meteors jointly developed by CIT and NASA—was installed in the International Space Station. The video and other images Meteor captures can be viewed live at the control room on our campus. In line with this policy, undergraduate courses consist of general education subjects, which cover an extensive range of knowledge in human, social, natural sciences, and specialized subjects, which cover professional knowledge in both theory and application. The general education subjects are designed to provide students with general knowledge, sometimes complemented by more specialized knowledge to respond to rapidly changing social and student needs. The specialized subjects gear students toward their particular career choices in the future. We adopt a semester system consisting of eight semesters over four years for undergraduate courses and provide remedial teaching for students who have not studied high school subjects that are essential for taking undergraduate courses. Moreover, we have a learning support center providing individually tailored educational guidance for high school curriculums given by tutors in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Continuing support for students to address their problems and concerns in all aspects of university life, especially in the orientation period, is provided. We have credit transfer agreements with 34 private universities and junior colleges in Chiba and the Open University of Japan. Another credit transfer agreement was concluded with the Faculty of Engineering of Chiba University. Under these agreements, CIT students are permitted to take some courses at other colleges and to count the credits obtained toward the number of credits required for graduation. The Graduate School is designed for students to continue their studies consistently from the undergraduate level and to acquire more in-depth knowledge and more advanced engineering skills in their respective fields. Our University's parent organization, The Kake Educational Institution (KEI), establish the Okayama University of Science in 1964 with the educational philosophy "To draw out a student's maximum potential." In 1995 the Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts was established, and KEI consisted of 2 universities, a junior and senior high school, and two vocational schools. In April of 2004, at the strong requests of the City of Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, the Chiba Institute of Science was established with the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Risk & Crisis Management. The Faculty of Pharmacy aims to preserve and advance each individual's health while improving the medical environment. Besides, the Faculty of Pharmacy strives to educate pharmacists that can actively participate in and improve the local medical conditions by developing precise medicines for treatment. With the desire to educate and train individuals to contribute to "Building a Healthy, Safe and Secure Society," Chiba Institute of Science was established in April of 2004; we are still a young university having recently celebrated our 10th anniversary. Beginning with two faculties, the Faculty of Risk & Crises Management and the Faculty of Pharmacy. In our 11th year, a third faculty, the Faculty of Nursing, began admitting students into the program. Students of all three faculties internalize the fundamentals of Risk & Crises. Pharmacists, Nurses, Public Health Nurses, Clinical Technologists, Clinical Engineers, and Paramedics, after passing national exams, go on to professions that help people. Does this interest you?
