- Our academy is a member of the Harris Federation, a group of 44 primary and secondary academies in and around London educating some 30,000 young people. The Harris Federation Teaching School Alliance enables us not only to train and develop teachers and leaders in our academies but also to do so for other schools. Each academy is led and run by its Principal and other senior leaders: we are deliberately a federation rather than a chain. What unites us is a culture that ensures the children and teenagers in our schools get an excellent education within a happy, caring, and supportive environment. As a result of this, all Harris academies so far to have been inspected by Ofsted have been rated either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with the vast majority being Outstanding. Many of these academies replaced schools previously considered to have been failing. The Harris Federation has been recognized as a top performer by education researchers at the Department for Education, Sutton Trust, and Education Policy Institute as well as Watchsted and PwC. We are a not-for-profit charity created by Lord Harris of Peckham. He and his family take an active interest in every Harris academy, supporting us financially and with their time. We are a small, successful Academy in New Beckenham that has recently been judged outstanding in every category by Ofsted. The Progress 8 figure for 2017 is 1.09 and our average grade at A-Level is a grade B. This means that we are now, the most successful school in the borough of Bromley and within the top 1% of schools in the country for progress. It is with enormous pride that I introduce our incredible school and the opportunities that benefit the girls so much. As a local parent myself, I know how important the decision about which school to send your daughter to is and about the relationship of trust that begins when a parent chooses a school to educate their daughter at. This is not a relationship that is taken lightly. We have the highest expectations of the girls (and boys in the Sixth Form) and we make no excuses for that I believe that we should all practice courtesy, consideration, and cooperation and we instill this in the girls from their very first day. Our motto of ‘All Can: We Will’ represents our belief that with our high-quality dedicated teaching and support, coupled with our academic and cultural enhancement curriculum, our girls will mature as responsible individuals who can and will succeed in their chosen paths. We are committed to building the confidence of each student, encouraging and motivating them to take full advantage of all the opportunities to learn and broaden their horizons while understanding the importance of respect and consideration to others. We believe this will enable them to make well-informed life choices beyond their school years and develop as mature and responsible members of the community. We are committed to inspiring our students to raise their aspirations, so they can achieve their very best. Our teachers, along with our Chair of Governors, are ambitious and act as positive role models for the girls. We encourage the students to participate in charitable activities both domestically and abroad, to further their experiences and understanding of our global diverse world. We are committed to strengthening our community through collaboration with parents and local activities. The learning philosophy of Commitment, Optimism, and Resilience develops learners who recognize that challenge is an opportunity, not an obstacle. We know that successful learners are committed, optimistic and resilient and our girls are. We encourage the use of the word yet, introducing strategies informed by the work of Hattie and Dweck, and have developed workshops in resilience and mindfulness. Our success at GCSE and A-Level demonstrates that we are achieving remarkable things. Progress in Maths and Sciences at GCSE level is exceptionally high and we continue our commitment to encourage our girls to study those subjects at A-Level in our Sixth Form. We will further expand teaching in STEM subjects over the coming years. We believe that the girls only have one opportunity to prepare for the challenges that will face them after they leave school and we are dedicated to ensuring that they are well prepared and will lead successful and happy lives. - Bromley Road has been at the heart of Beckenham since 1818 - long before the era of e-communications! We hope this website allows our friends, families, and community a glimpse of some aspects of everyday school life and some special events. However, the best way to get a feel for the school is to come and visit! We provide stimulating and varying opportunities for all children to fulfill their potential, develop an enthusiasm for learning and practice important life skills by becoming responsible, independent and sociable. As well as learning to read, write, spell, find out and count, we want our children to be inquisitive, energetic, healthy, and creative. Our most recent OFSTED report was published in February 2015 and confirmed Bromley Road as a 'Good' school. We welcome visitors to our school – parents, children, Governors, residents, students, and past pupils all play a vital part in everything we do. If you would like to know more, please make an appointment to visit and see us in action. Our parents and carers confirm that Bromley Road "is a school where their children are happy and settled." Our visions and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning and provide an environment that prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens. Our curriculum is centered on the needs of our children. From the first days in Reception, the staff prepares creative, challenging, and rewarding learning experiences that enable each child to reach their potential. We offer learning experiences inside and outside – in separate play areas, our School Garden, and on Beckenham Green. Visits to the local parks, museums, garden centers, shops, and attractions beyond, enhance the children’s learning and life experience, as do the workshops, presentations, and visitors who come into school. Our team of staff works together to understand and meet the needs of each child – supporting children who may struggle in learning and also promoting those who are making exceptional progress. The small groups and individual support are carefully monitored and we work with outside agencies for further advice and assessment when appropriate. We want to encourage the children to be independent learners, so are fortunate to have a Learning Mentor and 'Listening Ears' on our staff. As a healthy school, we teach the children how to look after themselves and encourage them to learn to do this independently. This year (2016-17) we are embarking on Peer Mediation Training, which will help the children to develop the appropriate skills and attitudes to tackle some of their friendship issues and worries. We know that physical health and strength support good learning, so we encourage the children to walk to school (or park and stride) and take part in early morning wake and shake routines. Several staff has trained in 'Talking and Drawing' and 'Emotional Literacy' to support individual children where appropriate. We have access to a Counsellor for children, families, and staff needing additional support and guidance. Families who wish to exercise their right to withdraw their child from specific activities and curriculum (Religious Education, collective worship, and Sex and Relationships education) are asked to meet with the Head Teacher to discuss their decision and confirm the decision in writing. Since 2014, the staff has been busy preparing for the change from Infant School to Primary. After research and visiting other schools, we embarked on the International Primary Curriculum, as a way to organize and structure the children's learning within the Early Years and National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2. Our 2016-17 Route Plan for learning can be found below. As a multi-cultural school, we have always celebrated the many nationalities and cultures that the staff and families represent. The IPC offers exciting themes within which the children's learning is organized, accompanied by Internationalmindedness and Personal Goals. Please see further information on our school motto, our values, and the IPC Personal Goals in the Vision and Values section. View full school
- Bromley High School was founded on 18th January 1883 the thirteenth school of the Girls' Public Day School Trust (now the GDST). The opening of Bromley High School marked the first public recognition in Bromley of the importance of higher education for girls. Our most famous teacher was Richmal Crompton (Miss Lamburn) author of the ‘William’ stories who taught Classics at Bromley High until she contracted polio in 1923. In the classroom, each girl's intellectual potential is challenged and developed by inspirational teachers whose concern for your daughter ranges infinitely beyond her performance in examinations teachers who can develop a love of learning, a spirit of inquiry, and independence of mind. Our girls participate with enthusiasm and commitment in Music, Drama, Sport, and an overabundant range of activities – and where they have interest or talent or enthusiasm, it is nurtured so that they learn to excel. We are immensely proud of our girls - from four-year-olds bright-eyed with wonder at each discovery to poised, unpretentious, and effortlessly impressive Upper Sixth. We believe: That girl should be able to flourish in supportive surroundings That the best environment in which this can happen is single-sex. Experience shows us they shine academically and socially in a girls-only environment. Mixed classes just aren’t the same That our schools, like our girls, should develop their characters, their strengths, and interests, their place in the individual communities they serve – but that they should have a shared DNA, a shared and consistent commitment to strive and succeed That the academic and social climate we create should be reassuring, but exciting so that girls have the confidence to reach beyond their own perceived limits That every girl should feel she belongs That every girl should be happy That every girl should be resilient That every girl should leave school academically and mentally equipped to succeed in whatever field is right for her. We are a school where both excellence and endeavor are valued where academic achievement and extra-curricular commitment are expected of every girl. In 2015, Bromley High School was shortlisted (alongside Wellington, Brighton College, Kilgraston, and Newcastle Grammar School) for ‘Outstanding Progress in a UK Independent School’ reflecting the aspirational ethos of our school. In a green and leafy environment with space to grow and have fun, our girls make rapid progress academically and socially. They are happy to express intellectual enthusiasm free to pursue their interests without regard to boys’ subjects or girls’ subjects confident to take the lead in the multitude of activities we offer. Bromley High School’s Aims To foster a love of learning which enables girls to fulfill their intellectual potential. To encourage girls to grow to become committed, composed, confident, and courageous young women. To enrich girls' education with an outstanding range of co-curricular opportunities. To prepare girls for the life beyond school and their responsibilities to a wider world. View full school
