Herbert Thompson is a large primary school on the west side of Cardiff, meeting the needs of children of all abilities aged 4-11. At Henry Green we A.S.P.I.R.E for all our pupils to become confident, secure caring individuals who achieve personal success and have a lifelong love of learning. We have two forms of entry from Reception through to year 6 and a nursery, providing education for children from 3-11. We are always pleased to welcome visitors so please make an appointment at the school’s main office should you wish to come and visit. At Henry Green, we provide our learners with a broad and balanced curriculum. We follow the National Curriculum 2014 and learning is linked to a particular half-termly theme. A theme provides a context to the learning, ideas for writing, and opportunities for cross-curricular links. At the start of each half-term, there will be a ‘WOW entry point’ based around that particular theme. This is a fun, engaging activity that memorably introduces the learning to motivate, enthuse and excite. For example, in the year 2 ‘Under the Sea’ theme, the children visit the London Aquarium. In the morning, doors open at 8.40 am and will close at 8.50 am prompt. Please make sure that your child arrives at school within these times. Children arriving after 8.50 am must enter via the school office, and will be marked as late. It gives us great pleasure to introduce the children, staff, and governors of Heathmere Primary School. Ofsted rated our school as GOOD in November 2014. We are immensely proud of our school and our children. At Heathmere, we set high standards for our children and we want them - by the time they reach year 6 - to be ready for secondary school. Throughout the school, nearly all pupils listen very respectfully and attentively. In the Foundation Phase, most pupils develop their speaking and listening skills exceptionally well and use a wide range of vocabulary confidently in different situations. In key stage 2, most pupils continue to develop speaking and listening skills to a high standard. In a group discussion, they express their opinions clearly and maturely. They reach a consensus, for example, on the best approach to use to solve a mathematical challenge. Many more able pupils communicate articulately, giving detailed and thoughtful observations on a wide variety of subjects, including how parents sometimes share information about their children on social media, without realizing the risk to children’s safety. Standards of reading are consistently very good across the school. In the Foundation Phase, most pupils make rapid progress in developing their early reading skills. Most Year 2 pupils are confident readers. They apply their skills effectively in all areas of learning, for instance, to find out facts about the human body in their science work. In Year 4, nearly all pupils read with fluency, accuracy, and expression. They lead their group discussions and talk animatedly about their favorite authors and books. By Year 6, most pupils’ reading skills are of a high standard. They infer meaning skilfully from classic literature and popular modern novels. They develop proficient skimming and scanning skills to gather information from a range of texts when researching topics in history, such as life in India under British rule. Many more able pupils consider whether the information is reliable, particularly when using online sources. Throughout the school, the overall quality of pupils’ writing is excellent. Nearly all pupils make extensive use of their literacy skills across the curriculum. Standards of handwriting and presentation of work are exemplary. By the end of Year 2, most pupils write engaging and extended pieces for a variety of purposes in literacy lessons and their work across the curriculum, for example, a report on healthy eating. Most pupils use a suitably wide range of punctuation accurately. They spell simple words correctly and apply their knowledge of phonics and visual patterns to make plausible attempts at more difficult words. There are also adult-led group activities and whole-class carpet times. An important part of our approach towards the development of reading and writing is the use of a phonics scheme. This is introduced in Nursery so that by the time our children move into Reception they are familiar with sounds and already beginning to use them in their reading and writing. PSED is a key area of the Foundation Stage curriculum.
