St Joseph’s is a voluntary aided Roman Catholic primary school in the Archdiocese of Cardiff. It is situated in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Penarth. The school is currently in Standards Group 2 and is ‘Yellow’ school in the National Categorisation Model. The percentage of children in receipt of Free School Meals has risen each year for the last five years from under 5% in 2010 to nearly 10% in 2015. The school remains in Benchmarking Group 1 with an FSM three-year average of 7.8%. The school population has grown significantly recently, rising by approximately 30% in the past three years. The Deputy Headteacher has been in post since April 2015. The 2014-15 individual school budget per pupil at St Joseph’s RC Primary School was £3,362, which compares with a maximum of £6,237 and a minimum of £2,727 for primary schools in the Vale of Glamorgan. The overall school budget (including EIG and PDG) fell by circa £30,000 in 2015-16 resulting in the loss of three LSAs. The school is a Primary School and accepts children from September following their fourth birthday, until the age of eleven. Most of the learning is under the control of the class teacher who is with the children every day. We have additional support staff who work with the classes and with small groups, giving children opportunities for additional individual teacher attention. The classes are numbered according to the National Curriculum year group. Our core aim is to provide children with the skills, attitudes, knowledge, and confidence necessary to begin making informed choices for themselves. St John’s Primary School is a two-form entry primary school with a nursery. We are the borough provision for children with speech and language difficulties. There are two speech and language ARPS (Additionally Resourced Provisions).
