St Mark’s is a two-form entry community school set in the heart of Hanwell, which is part of the London Borough of Ealing. Saint Mark’s RC Primary School is situated in the city of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. St Mark’s Primary has a delightful nursery housed in its accommodation within the school grounds. The nursery has two large rooms and an extension, which offers a cloakroom, a changing facility for children with additional support needs, and an adult toilet. The nursery also has full wheelchair access. The nursery caters to 32 full-time pupils. The nursery is very spacious, with a lovely structured outdoor play area containing a living willow dome. This year we plan to continue to plant raised beds at the side of the nursery, and the children will be involved in planting and maintaining flowers and herbs. The nursery employs highly trained staff comprising of the Principal Teacher, a nursery teacher, three Early Years Practitioners, and two Early Years Assistants. St Mark's follows the London Borough of Merton admissions policy and Merton coordinates admissions for all year groups. Children start St Mark’s Nursery in January or September following their third birthday. The nursery has 39 children in September and is then full from January, with 52 children. Each year there is a single application and offer process for Nursery places. Applications for admission to Nursery can be made on paper forms or online via the link below. Offers are sent out to parents/carers in May. Once a place has been accepted parents/carers are invited to visit the school and meet the Nursery staff who will explain the settling in process. Children are admitted to Reception in the September following their fourth birthday. Much of the learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage is done through playing and exploring and being active and creative, both indoors and outside. There is a mix of adult-led and child-led and child-initiated activities. As children go through into reception class the balance will gradually shift towards more activities led by adults. Children and young people spend lots of time on the internet. They may go online to research information for homework or to play games. The internet holds a massive amount of useful information and can also be a really good way of learning about new things and keeping in contact with friends and family. It can also be an incredibly dangerous place so children must be protected and monitored when they are online. St Mark’s Primary School is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils. Parents are strongly advised by the Government and Local Authority to avoid taking children out of school in term time because of the disruption it causes to their education. Authorized absence will only be granted during term time in exceptional circumstances and only then if past attendance has been excellent. At St Mark's we believe that it is essential for home and school to work together to help all of our children succeed and reach their full potential. Therefore all families are asked to sign a 'home school agreement' when they join the school. If your child needs to have a prescribed (by a doctor) medicine administered at school you must complete a form that is available from the school office. We ask you to bring in medicine in the prescribed container/packet to the school office where we will ask you to fill in a form. If your child is sick at home we ask that you do not bring them to school until at least 24 hours has elapsed, to avoid the risk of infecting other children. It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected and that each person is treated fairly and well. We are a caring community, the values of which are built on mutual trust and respect for all. The school's behavior policy is therefore designed to support how all members of the school can live and work together in a supportive way. It aims to promote an environment in which everyone feels happy, safe, and secure. The school has several rules, but our behavior policy is not primarily concerned with rule enforcement. AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. At St Mark’s the children in Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 use AR. Your child picks a book at his/her level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer - passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read. STAR Reading is used to determine your child’s reading level. It is a computer-based reading assessment program that uses computer-adaptive technology. Questions continually adjust to your child’s responses. If the child’s response is correct, the difficulty level is increased. If the child cannot answer a question or answers incorrectly, the difficulty level is reduced. The test uses multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 10 minutes. At St Mark’s we believe that healthy and active children are more successful and happier learners. That is why we invest time and money into ensuring we offer a broad P.E. (Physical Education) experience for our pupils both in and out of their timetabled lessons. We give all the children the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of physical activities. St. Mark's Catholic Primary School is a large school at the heart of its community. We currently have 210 pupils on our roll. We are a one form entry school with up to 30 pupils in each year group. We have a very large site that offers our pupils an exceptional environment in which to learn. St Margaret's tops the Sunday Times' Small Schools' League Tables for 2016 and 2017, St Margaret's is an independent school for girls between the ages of 4 and 16. There are 155 girls and 23 teachers in the St Margaret's family. Like most schools, we want our girls to be happy, rounded, and confident. We work towards reaching these goals by engaging with each girl on a personal level, something you can do when you have small classes, low teacher turnover, and a culture of involvement. Every girl stands out at St Margaret's School. 155 girls and everyone outstanding, Here it is not only the tallest, most athletic girls who represent the school at netball, or the most extrovert who get the speaking roles in plays. Our girls' exam results are excellent, with on average about 2 out of every 3 GCSEs taken graded A* or A. The school has become an expert at teaching girls since 1884. As we rarely advertise, almost all our girls come here through word of mouth. We are understandably pleased with both but, as any current parent will tell you, there is no substitute for coming to see us in person. What should be immediately apparent to anyone visiting the school is this: small class sizes, a culture of learning, and an environment in which treating each other with respect and kindness is the norm, not an aim. We are committed to providing a secure, caring, and challenging learning environment in which girls are encouraged to strive for excellence in all that they do. Respect for others lies at the heart of the school community, within which the potential and talent of each individual can be recognized, nurtured, and realized. At St Margaret's education is seen as a partnership between pupils, parents, and teachers, The small friendly and homely atmosphere allows the girls to achieve whatever they can - but in a safe, nonconfrontational environment. The written records relating to the history of our school are, disappointingly, very thin on the ground. Because the school was privately owned for the first 70 or so years of its existence, there are practically no official records of its early years and its successive owners were, alas, not foresighted enough to preserve the kind of material which might answer our questions about that period of its life. A proper, academic, history of the school is not viable. St Margaret's is not the oldest school in Hampstead, but it is one of the oldest. What gives it its genuine historical significance, however, is that it is the last remaining "proprietorial" school in the area. In the second half of the 19th century, there were dozens of such schools, based in ordinary houses in the leafy residential streets of Hampstead. Most took only a handful of pupils - both boarding and day - and were owned and presided over by the spinster ladies who often had limited qualifications but no other way of providing for themselves. The vast majority lasted only a decade or two, fading away as their owners retired or died. Most of those who did manage to survive for longer were forced to close because of dwindling numbers during the turmoil of the World Wars or by the demand for better facilities and more advanced educational methods as the 20th century progressed. But somehow, very much against the odds, St Margaret's survived. 128 years on, it is now in its fifth home and the hands of its tenth Principal. Although the school is celebrating its 128th anniversary, the name "St Margaret's" is quite a little bit younger. It was normal to practice in the 19th century for private schools to have no particular name - they would be referred to by the name of the owners of the houses they occupied. So our school was probably known simply as "Miss Tulloch's" or (possibly) "Chester House". The first mention of "St Margaret's" is in 1898, when a newspaper advertisement appeared, announcing that Miss Tulloch would be moving the school to "St Margaret's, Oak Hill Park". So the name probably came from the house which was to become the school's second home, though we know (from the memoirs of Daphne du Maurier, a former pupil) that even in 1915 it was still referred to as "Miss Tulloch's School". St Margaret's Lee is a one-form entry school (one class per year group), with a nursery providing part-time places for three- to four-year-olds. In our school achievement reviews over the past five years, Lewisham local authority has consistently categorized us as an 'outstanding' school. This judgment is based on pupil achievement, quality of teaching, behavior, and safety, leadership and management, and overall effectiveness. In November 2014, the Ofsted inspection team judged us to be outstanding in all areas. We have an excellent teaching team, an active governing body and parents' association (called the Friends of St Margaret's Lee), and strong links with St Margaret's Church. Our class teachers and teaching assistants are highly dedicated, and the quality of their teaching shows in the progress and attainment of the children. But we have other ways of judging the teaching quality across the school too. Headteacher Mr. Wilson and Deputy Headteacher Mrs. Bushell provide regular in-class support and feedback to teachers, as well as monitoring planning, marking, and the classroom environment to help ensure consistently high standards.
