The present building was opened in 1900 in response to the needs of the Catholic families of Newport and the surrounding areas. The main building houses the majority of the classrooms, the upper and lower halls and libraries over three floors. There are a further three classrooms in an annex building situated just behind the main building. The school also has use of an adjacent building that houses a kitchen and dining facilities. This building is also used for physical education and assemblies and concerts. The school is set on extensive grounds with two playgrounds, fields, an outdoor classroom, trim trail and play equipment, and a Forest School area. English is a core curriculum subject and is taught every day. We use a variety of teaching and learning styles to teach English skills. We aim to develop children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views, and feelings. We do this through daily English lessons in which children experience whole-class reading or writing activities, guided group or children's independent activities, and whole-class sessions to review and assess progress and learning. Children are taught a range of strategies to help them read, including phonics (the sounds letters make). We use the Letters and Sounds scheme to teach phonics. Children are assessed and then streamed into relevant phases depending on their ability. Phase 1: Phonics lessons take place daily (this phase is mostly taught in Reception class). Children explore sounds and develop their listening skills. Phase 2: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. The Letters and Sounds scheme is used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. By the end of phase 2, many children should be able to read some VC (vowel-consonant) and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and to spell them. They start to learn to read and spell some high-frequency ‘tricky’ words. Phase 3 and 4: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. Letters and Sounds is the scheme used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. Children begin to read and write one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes. They blend and segment CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant), CCVC, and CVCC words for reading and spelling and use their phonic knowledge when trying to read and write more complex words. Phase 5 and 6: Phonics lessons take place on 4 days of the week. Letters and Sounds are used to deliver a progressive program of word reading skills. Children are taught to read words automatically if they are very familiar with decoding them quickly and silently because their sounding and blending routine is now established and to decode them out loud. At St Mary’s we learn our phonics in a fun and active way. We have 20 minutes phonics sessions every day and enhance this further by splitting our EYFS and KS1 classes into smaller groups, so all children can have focused and targeted support to help them achieve their best. Our phonics is also linked to our Reading scheme in EYFS and KS1, so children have the opportunity to practice the sounds they have learned in real books, creating a love for reading. At St Mary’s we know the children need to have an opportunity to discuss and reflect on their thoughts and feelings. Every week we have ‘circle time’. On our smart classroom carpets, we provide a chance for everyone to sit in a circle, so that everyone can be seen, and take turns to share and discuss our ideas as a class. This is our ‘safety circle’, where children have the opportunity to speak openly and honestly, knowing that nothing will go outside the circle. Often we will start with a few games to warm us up, then we follow the circle rules so that everyone has the chance to speak. This leads to a SEAL or PHSE aspect of learning. Each half term the whole school has a new SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) theme. This theme is then linked with a PHSE topic taken from the scheme of work recommended by the Local Authority. PSHE education is a planned program of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to manage their lives. Our challenging curriculum starts with building firm foundations in English and Mathematics which is taught within the Catholic ethos of the school. Visits are also valuable opportunities for personal and social education and will be used to fully develop children’s awareness of self, of others, and the world around them. School uniforms will be worn unless unsuitable for the particular activity. Before each outing involving transport parents will receive a letter from the school giving all relevant details and are asked to complete a consent form. Without the consent form, a child is unable to participate in the educational visit. During the year, children sometimes go on local walks or to the park as part of their lessons. Agreement to such excursions is given by way of a general permission slip which parents sign once a year. St Mary's is a Catholic primary school in which everyone is valued as a member of God's family. Our school has existed on this site since 1861 and we are proud of its long tradition of high-quality Catholic education. St Mary’s is a one-and-a-half-form entry school admitting 45 children each year. The two Reception classes and the classes in Year 1 and Year 2 usually have 22 or 23 children in each. Throughout the rest of the school, the children are organized into classes of about 30. There are currently six classes in the Junior Department, covering Years 3 to 6 and forming what is known as Key Stage 2. Some of these classes have children from two age groups that work together. Throughout the school children are provided with additional help in English and other curriculum areas according to their individual needs. In Key Stage 2, we can provide children with invaluable additional help in mathematics by teaching them in smaller ability-based groups. At St Mary’s we offer a range of groups to support children in addition to the work they are doing in class. These can be informal and determined by the class teacher for example if your child has found a particular concept difficult in class they may be taken for further support in this area. Some groups are run on a more formal and regular basis. These are led by a teaching assistant and may include help with speech and language, social skills, self-esteem, or an area of learning such as phonics. If your child is in a regular group, you will be informed by their class teacher. Occasionally, other children may also be invited to take part in an intervention group to support their peers by modeling good speaking and listening skills or modeling positive behavior strategies. In July 2015, following a period of fact-finding and consultation with parents, staff, the Diocese, the local authority, and other stakeholders in the community, Sacred Heart and St Mary’s formalized the existing successful collaboration and became a hard federation: The Federation of Sacred Heart and St Mary’s Catholic schools, Battersea. A single governing body jointly led by Co-Chairs Mr. John Hallmark and Mr. Andrew Cooper was created to oversee the working of both schools and the existing temporary Executive Headteacher became a permanent appointment: Mr. Jared Brading. The schools are led by Heads of School: Mrs. Nicola Byrne at Sacred Heart and Mrs. Claire Mitchell at St Mary’s. These two Catholic primary schools, within a mile of each other, are committed to ensuring the highest possible standards are met for children at both schools and that they work together, united in their Catholic mission to develop an education centered in the Gospel and on God’s love for all.
