The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the period of education from birth to five years. During the Reception class, the children work towards the early learning goals. Most children are expected to achieve the early learning goals by the end of the Foundation Stage. There is a strong emphasis on children learning through play, both child-initiated and planned play. The curriculum is delivered through a combination of whole-class activities, adult-led focussed activities, and child-initiated activities. In our Reception Class, we teach children through ‘topics’ and these are based on the children’s interests. KS1 classes (Year 1 and Year 2) follow the National Curriculum, with emphasis on reading, writing, speaking & listening, mathematics and science. They use units from Milepost 1 of the IPC KS2 follows the National Curriculum, with an emphasis on English, maths, and science. Years 3 & 4 use units from Milepost 2 of the IPC, whereas Years 5 & 6 use units from Milepost 3. In 1852, St. Michael’s opened as a Victorian Farm School with the ambition ‘to create an effective school for the poor’. This was both inspirational and ambitious – children did not have to go to school and many could not afford to do so. The school’s mission was, ‘to render the Boys and Girls generally handy and industrious and they should be employed as much as possible in general work and jobbing in about the schools.’ The school has gone through many changes since then. In April 1972, the new junior building was finished. It was officially opened in June by Margaret Thatcher, then-Secretary of State for Education. The opening was celebrated with a special opera performance. The Junior Hall continues to host many exciting plays, concerts, pantomimes, assemblies, fairs, and workshops. The infant children are still taught in the original buildings, which in 1979 were connected by another new hall. The Infant Hall is dedicated to Richard Grout, a headteacher from 1968-1981, who instigated many of the modern additions to the buildings. More recently, a room devoted to science and technology was created as well as a computing room, Greenroom, and Art room. The Art room is dedicated to Barbara Smith, a headteacher from 1997 until 2009. Plans are underway to convert a former teacher’s living quarters on the school grounds into a dedicated space for music. Thanks to our beginnings as a farm school, we are situated on four acres of land – a unique feature for a London school. This legacy of space left by the pioneers of 1852 gives the children an enviable environment. They are surrounded by fields, trees, gardens, and allotments, which are used daily for outdoor learning, sports, events – and of course, play. St Matthias a one-and-a-half form entry Church of England Primary School with a Nursery. The children in our care range from three to eleven years old. We are one of eight schools within the Primary Advantage Federation which is in turn overseen by Executive Head Sian Davies. Orlene Badu, our Headteacher, leads teaching and learning in the school and is supported by a strong Senior Leadership Team. They act as the point of contact for parents, children, and staff. Many of our children join St Matthias in the Nursery, aged three. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school but children meeting the Local authority’s entry requirements will move on to the reception where they will be joined by children new to the school. St Matthias is governed by Hackney’s admission procedures. Full details of the admissions criteria and a copy of the admission form for Reception are available on the Learning Trust website. St Matthias is responsible for nursery admissions, due to new legislation’s all schools across the country can only offer 15 funded hours for free. Children learn through a careful balance of specific teaching programs and a topic-based approach. St Matthew’s Primary School provides a high standard of education within a Christian environment where every pupil is valued as an individual. It is our aim that all pupils reach their full potential, take responsibility for themselves and their actions, show respect and concern for others, and care for the natural world. Our children move on to the next stage of their education with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a love of learning. Lessons are structured to engage and challenge children so that learning progresses very quickly. Many opportunities are taken to extend learning beyond the four walls of the classroom, to our wonderful playing field, our vegetable garden, the local parks, museums, farms, theatres, galleries, and later to residential trips to Dorset, Shropshire, and France. Building upon the very good foundations laid in the homes of our children, we work in partnership with parents so that pupils leave our school as happy, confident, healthy, and responsible young people with a highly developed sense of duty. The School admits children to the Reception class in the September of the school year in which a child attains the age of 5 years. (The school year runs from 1 September to the 31st August.) All parents/carers are entitled to a full-time place for their child in the reception class from September, but may defer entry until the beginning of the term after their child is five years old (ie, when the child reaches compulsory school age) or until the beginning of the summer term whichever is earlier. Children may attend part-time until their child reaches compulsory school age. Parents/carers who have been offered a place at the school and wish to defer entry for their child and/or attend part-time must put this in writing to the headteacher at the earliest opportunity and before the start of the autumn term. The school does not have any specific unit for pupils with particular special needs. However, the school is on a level site and all the accommodation is on one floor, with ramps at the main entrance and certain doors to the playground. All classrooms may be entered without steps, and one toilet has been specially equipped for pupils with physical disabilities. As far as possible, the school ensures that pupils with disabilities have access to the same opportunities as other pupils. Parents/carers of pupils who have a statement of special educational needs, or Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan are required to apply for school places separately through the local authority from whom advice is available. If a child with a statement, or EHC Plan, is placed in the school by the local authority before the normal admission round, the number of places available to other applicants will be reduced. The Governors will admit all those pupils whose statement, or EHC Plan, names the School. In the foundation stage, which covers Nursery and Reception we follow Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, This splits the curriculum into seven equally important areas of learning. The Early Learning Goals within each Area of Learning outline what most children should be able to achieve by the time they leave Reception at the age of 5. As you will see when you visit the Foundation Stage, our practitioners are skilled at providing an enabling and enriching environment for the children, which plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
