Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology

The college was established in 1956 as the Southern Mindanao branch of the Philippine Institute of Fisheries Technology (PIFT), the U.P.'s predecessor in the Visayas - College of Fisheries. In 1965, the SMSF became the first fishery school under the Department of Education to attain college status by R.A. No. 3434 and was renamed Mindanao Regional School of Fisheries (MRSF). In 1980, the MRSF was included as one of the eight project institutes of the Sixth Education Project of the Philippine government that were developed into Regional Institutes of Fisheries Technology (RIFTs) through a US$38 million loan package from the World Bank. In 1986, the college was granted its charter and the mandate to develop and implement courses in fisheries, maritime technology, marine sciences, development management, food technology, and computer science with the issuance of P.D. No. 2020 converting the then MRSF-RIFT into the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST). A learning institution that transforms individuals into globally competitive human capital in fisheries, maritime and information technology, pedagogy, and industries for the rational management of aquatic resources. Generate and manage knowledge in the institution's academic disciplines, produce ecologically–conscious professionals, provide leadership in the sustainable development of the aquatic ecosystems and improve the people's quality of life. The college scholarship is open to all academically qualified applicants. As a general rule, a scholarship awardee must have passed the college admission test and the colleges' admission requirements where he/she intends to enroll. The scholarship awardee must show proof of personal integrity, good moral character, scholarship qualities, and civic consciousness in the form of certification. A coordination effort with the barangay officials of two barangays (Lampang and victoria) where snap mangrove rehabilitation was conducted and yielded positive results that led to the forging of a memorandum of agreement establishment of aquasilviculture project in the area. A total of eight aquasilviculture units were successfully constructed from January to December 2015. Six additional units in barangay camping under the leadership of Mr. Salvador Arrieta and two units in barangay victoria under Mr. Edmond delante, president of their respective groups. Farm inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, and fry fingerlings were already issued to some completed units. Eustaquio wanted a school that would embody the ideals and aspirations of the youth live up to the expectations of the people of a school for everybody, regardless of social standing, religion, political affiliations, and one that imparts a higher level of understanding that enable students to be successful in their professional and personal endeavor. The Zamboanga Arturo Eustaquio Colleges (ZAEC) was established with the primary objective of providing affordable education to the underprivileged. This aim was driven by the founder's dream and inspired by his own life story, for he was once a struggling UP scholar. Eng. Zamboanga A.E. Colleges started with a Secondary School, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Commerce with 479 students. Classes were initially held at the former Mendoza Building, where Young Mart is now located. By June of 1949, ZAEC was moved to its new home, the present city campus. In the same year, the first High School Graduation took place, and the Complete Academic Secondary Course was granted government recognition. The first batch of college graduates was turned over in 1952. As ZAEC seeks to provide and reach out to more students, it opened a branch in Ipil in the SY 2002-2003. From a population of about two hundred in the first year, today, the campus is home to about seven hundred students. Zamboanga A.E. Colleges was given ISO accreditation last December 2, 2002. It was the first ISO 9000:2001 Certified Higher Education Institution in Western Mindanao, and it was recently elevated to ISO 9001:2008 Certification. April 11, 2005, marks this institution's glorious event as the CHED Manila granted the most expected university status. The university was given a new name—UNIVERSIDAD DE ZAMBOANGA.
- The Ateneo de Zamboanga began in 1912 as Escuela Catolica, a parochial school run by Spanish Jesuits at the Immaculate Conception Church's old site, right across the Sunken Garden. Fr. Manuel M. Sauras, S.J., was the first director. In 1930, the American Jesuits took over from the Spanish Jesuits with Fr. Thomas Murray, S.J. as the first American director. Classes were also held in the Knights of Columbus (K of C) building, now the site City Theater. The first high school students graduated from Ateneo in 1932. In 1938, a library was built on the first floor of the K of C Building. A facade, an auditorium, and an annex were also built. John Shinn was appointed headmaster of the Grade School, and Fr. Francis Clark, S.J. became the principal and dean of the High School discipline. The school was closed during World War II. The Japanese used it as a public elementary school until it was shelled and bombed by the American forces on March 8 and 9 in 1945, before the city's liberation.
