- At Somerset Academy, we promote intellectual curiosity. We encourage students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 to interpret, evaluate, and communicate ideas knowledgeably and confidently within a framework of high academic, artistic, and athletic standards. Working one year ahead of their chronological grade level, our students experience an enriched academic program with a balance of Visual Arts, Physical Education, Music, and Computer Study, as well as many diverse extracurricular activities. We look forward to meeting you and your child. All Somerset teachers and students are members of one of the three Houses - Flaming Maples, Beavers, and Yellow Lightning - and remain in the same House throughout their time. Siblings are always placed in the same House unless their parents specifically request otherwise. The House system is aimed at building relationships that transcend grade boundaries and encouraging team spirit. Each term, one House organizes a community outreach project to raise awareness of or fund a local charity. Recent projects have included tree planting in a local conservation area, visiting elderly residents of a Unionville seniors' home, and organizing letter-writing to an orphanage in Ukraine. The House system rewards extra effort in non-academic areas, and House Points are tallied and reported to students every week. Each term, there is a special Civil Day for the winning House, when students in that House may come to school in "civil" clothes. At the end of the year, the overall winning House is presented with the highly-contested House Cup. At Somerset Academy, we promote intellectual curiosity and encourage students to learn effectively. Our students are taught to interpret, evaluate, and communicate ideas knowledgeably and confidently within a high academic, artistic, and athletic standards framework. We also nurture respect for the individual, foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment, and instill an awareness of the community's needs. The administration and staff of Somerset Academy believe that a well-rounded education can only be built on a solid academic foundation. This is the cornerstone of our approach to learning. However, we are also concerned with the education of the whole child. So time is spent helping students develop self-confidence, independence, respect for themselves and others, and a sense of responsibility towards the world in which we live. The school recognizes the need for structure yet remains a hot and supportive environment. There is a strong sense of community, which is evident in the relationship between students and staff, and great emphasis is placed on the concept of the "Somerset Family. Our goal is to enable every child to develop to their fullest potential and produce academically successful, confident, and responsible young people. Our Primary program includes full-day Junior and Senior Kindergarten. Using an activity-centered approach, the curriculum emphasizes good listening skills and fine and gross motor development and fosters an awareness of and appreciation for individual abilities. Subjects including Music, Art, French, Physical Education, Nature Studies, Computer Studies, discussion, and drama, are used to encourage individual growth and social development. Instruction in Reading and Mathematics are introduced to our Kindergarten students as soon as they are ready. In Grades One and Two, there is further development of skills in the traditional core subjects of writing, reading, and mathematics. Besides, through various approaches and resources that cater to individual learning styles, students are introduced to science, Geography, and History/Cultural Studies. Because of the school's accelerated and enriched program, students work at a level approximately one year above Ministry of Education guidelines. As in all Divisions, the small class size (maximum of 18 students per class) allows maximum attention and encouragement for each student. The curriculum is supplemented by activities such as field trips, museum visits, and unusual activity days. The Junior program is designed to provide a developmental period of skill consolidation. The curriculum is geared towards giving students a solid foundation in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, History, Geography, French, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Health. Ministry of Education guidelines are enhanced by specific instruction on organization, working independently, and following a study and homework log. Also, high behavioral expectations are set to get the most out of their school day. Computer lessons are scheduled into the timetable, and the integration of curriculum and technology is emphasized at all times. As in the Primary Division, small class sizes allow individual attention and encouragement to enable all students to maximize their potential. As the students progress towards the top of the school, the core academic subjects continue to be the mainstay program. Students' abilities are refined and extended during this period, and focus is placed on problem-solving, reasoning skills, and the development of good study habits. There is an emphasis on preparation for High School, whether public or private. To this end, students are challenged to extend themselves, as our goal is to leave Somerset Academy feeling confident about their skills and ability to work independently. Formal examinations begin in Grade Six. As in all other grades, class size never exceeds eighteen, and the curriculum is enriched by particular activities, studies, and field trips. Students in Grades Seven and Eight are also offered the opportunity to take part in a three- or four-day visit to either Ottawa or Quebec (alternating each year, so all students get to visit both cities), building team spirit and encourages personal independence.
- Somerset College is a co-educational, independent, inter-denominational school in the Christian tradition catering for students from Pre-Prep to Year 12. The College has a commitment to being a pioneer and leader in educational innovation, accessing recognized national and international curricula, and fostering and building links with local, national, and international tertiary institutions and within the broader international community. Somerset College offers a unique educational experience, but what defines the Somerset Experience? Encouraging fulfillment of individual potential in academia, sport, and extracurricular. Producing socially well-adjusted individuals. Creating an atmosphere of happiness, trust, understanding, and endeavor. Providing an integrated curriculum, where mapping across the curriculum makes sense of the subject. Fostering a community of learning, where all types of learning are valued and celebrated. Valuing lifelong learning, where learning is on-going. Promoting both the journey outward and the journey inward (reflection and exploration). These actions lead to developing engaged global citizens, aspiring to excellence, demonstrating integrity, and valuing difference. This philosophy has also attracted excellent staff who share this view of education. Under their guidance, all students are provided with the necessary encouragement to fully develop academic skills, character strength, and a wide range of interests in areas such as sport, music, and drama. A high level of individual commitment and participation is expected of all students. The College also emphasizes appropriate discipline standards, especially about manners, speech, and dress. The College's philosophy ensures that these standards of behavior come about as a result of high levels of self-esteem and self-discipline. The measure of any school lies in its readiness to help young people grow, develop their talents, and liberate their imagination. Somerset happily accepts this challenge and seeks to create vital and resourceful young men and women. From humble beginnings in 1983, Somerset College has achieved a much-esteemed position in education. Our students and staff's success in academic, pastoral, cultural, physical, and spiritual domains has flowed from a tangible commitment to excellence and collaboration. One only needs to visit the beautiful campus, speak with members of our community, and, especially, observe our students' vibrancy and joy to know that there is something special happening here. A triangular approach is facilitated through staff, parents, and students' focus on enhancing student outcomes. The co-educational, multi-age mix of students enables a natural progression from external to self-discipline. Our students graduate confident in their abilities and resilient enough to accept the inevitable challenges that life will provide. The College believes unashamedly in high standards and personal responsibility. Equally, our many service programs provide opportunities for compassion and empathy. After all, "to whom much is given much is expected. For Somerset graduates who have only begun their learning, this initial journey of discovery is conducted through a supportive yet challenging set of experiences. Our staff and students walk side by side in this journey, making the process all the richer.

- Welcome to Pillar College, where we are dedicated to helping you pursue God's purpose and your passions in higher education. Pillar is an undergraduate and graduate institution of higher learning faithful to classical Christianity, grounded on God's Word's authority, and committed to challenging Christians to serve Christ with passion and purpose. He came into the world to serve God and humanity; you also are invited to learn how to invest your life to make a lasting impact on our world. Pillar College educates, inspires, and equips students for excellent scholarship, service, and leadership. Rooted in and committed to Christian faith and love, Pillar fosters intellectual, spiritual, and social development among its diverse student population at various instructional sites. The Pillar stands firmly within the Wesleyan heritage in embracing a world-wide parish, an obligation of love to serve the poor and needy, an earnest devotion to the empowering work of the Holy Spirit in every believer, and willingness to seek unity and cooperation with other believers on all that is essential to the faithful Christian life. Such commitments provide endless possibilities by which Pillar College works to implement its mission for every student. We start by affirming a heartfelt desire to welcome students of various theological traditions and various ethnic, national, and racial heritages. With this global outlook, Pillar also seeks to co-labor with area churches and denominations of kindred heart. Pillar College is New Jersey's only fully-accredited evangelical College in the heart of the inner-city. A great way to learn more about the Pillar College community is to schedule a personal visit or attend any of our Admissions Events scheduled throughout the year at any of our three locations -in Newark, Somerset, or Paterson. Pillar Ambassadors lead campus tours on weekdays and select Saturdays (Open House). You can visit classrooms, talk to professors, visit our student center and athletic facilities (Somerset campus only) – When you visit, you will find that Pillar College is more than an address. You will get a good sense of the unique and supportive environment offered at each campus and the types of students Pillar attracts. While here, you can talk with an Admission Counselor. Financing a college education requires determination, careful planning, and, most importantly, faith. While we maintain that paying for a college education remains the student's responsibility, we also believe that God provides for those who are diligent in obeying His call. Students seeking financial aid should review resources available through the Pillar College Financial Aid office. Pillar College makes it a priority to offer our students a quality education at the lowest possible cost. Tuition and fees only cover a portion of the total cost of education. Additional funds offsetting students' costs are derived from gifts to the College from area churches and contributors. In this way, every student receives assistance through our affordable tuition structure. Pillar College operates a full student financial aid program, including grants, scholarships, loans, and employment, allowing any student a realistic opportunity to finance their college education. More than 95% of all Pillar College students who apply for financial assistance to further their education receive it. We are aware that each family offers a unique financial situation. Our Financial Aid staff is available to work with students to find the resources to fund their education at Pillar College. The goal of Student Services is to provide supportive, community-oriented services to address the needs of students at Pillar College academically, spiritually, emotionally, and vocationally. We desire to become an ever-improving, caring, and equipping community that encourages personal and community health. To accomplish this, we practice cooperation within the community and a network of contacts with professional Christian counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists that work in our area. We also seek to maintain positive and mutually rewarding contact with churches, pastors, and various parachurch ministries. Students at Pillar College develop incredibly close friendships with one another. Interactive classes and student-led events, along with dynamic and interactive classroom settings, enhance these relationships. Pillar College has its roots as an educational ministry of the Pillar of Fire, International. The Pillar of Fire was organized in 1901. It is an evangelical organization with theological roots in the Methodist Episcopal Church and the nineteenth-century American Holiness Movement. Originally called Zarephath Bible Institute, ZBI was founded in 1908 as a training school for missionaries, preachers, and teachers. Over the years, it has prepared many students to serve in various occupations in numerous Christian ministry organizations. ZBI became Somerset Christian College on March 23, 2001, When the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education issued the license to grant the two-year Associate in Biblical Studies degree. In 2006 the College was approved to offer four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees. After the Zarephath Campus's loss due to Hurricane Irene in 2011, Somerset Christian College moved its headquarters to Newark, NJ and in 2012, changed its name to Pillar College. View full university
