And a century later, medical education is recognized by the Church, which makes Montpellier the oldest School of practicing medicine in the Western world. At the same time, lawyers are beginning to gather in Montpellier around famous teachers as Placentia Bologna. In 1289, the University of Montpellier was officially created by the bull Quia Sapientia of Pope Nicolas IV. Named a Studium Generale, it gathers the teachings of medicine, law, literature, and theology.
- Montpellier Business School, a Grande École, is heir to a long tradition of teaching based on businesses and markets' needs. Founded in 1897 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Montpellier, the school has succeeded in continually refining its specialized instruction in management sciences over the years to adapt its programs to constant changes in local and global economic environments. The institution's aim is "to be a leading European business school in the Languedoc-Roussillon Region that is internationally recognized for its values, its academic excellence and its concern for global responsibility and performance, which characterizes its operations, stakeholders, and results." In order to achieve this strategic goal of global and sustainable performance, Montpellier Business School has adopted the core values of diversity, openness, and global responsibility, all inspired by the school's mission: "to train, through our higher education programs, managers that are strong in their diversity, aware of their global responsibility in carrying out their missions, and able to adapt to changes in local, national and international environments." (By 'global,' we understand societal, economic, and environmental responsibility). The quality of the school's strategy and results is internationally recognized. The following distinctions attest to the school's excellent international reputation: its triple international accreditation (AACSB, AMBA, EFMD/EPAS), its place among the TOP 50 best Master in Management programs in the world, it is ranking among the TOP 80 European Business Schools in 2013 according to the Financial Times and its place in the French national rankings. The Montpellier Business School's values aim to anchor all of its actions and activities in a global environment that shows responsibility towards societies, territories, and individuals. Three prominent families of values guide Montpellier Business School in all of its endeavors: Ethics: Individual or group capacity to engage in critical thinking concerning the rules and values of human behavior An attempt to define the "right thing to do" based on honesty, fairness, and integrity. Openness and diversity: individual and collective capacity of dealing intelligently with diversity in all its forms, either voluntarily or involuntarily (without demagogic intentions), through positive openness and outreach. Responsibility and overall performance: the constant search for economic, social, and environmental efficient actions, bearing in mind acute awareness of their impacts on all stakeholders along with the willingness to report them transparently. These institutional values can be seen in Montpellier Business School's actions and commitments to fight against discrimination and to train all talented individuals, regardless of their backgrounds and social situations. As a result of all the measures implemented and the integration of diversity issues into its teaching and research, the school obtained the Diversity Label in France in October 2009 and in October 2011 created a "Diversity and Social and Environmental Responsibility" department. The mission of Montpellier Business School is "to train, through our higher education programs, managers that are strong in their diversity, aware of their global responsibility in carrying out their missions, and able to adapt to changes in local, national, and international environments." (By 'global,' we understand societal, economic, and environmental responsibility). Montpellier Business School was founded in 1897 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Montpellier (CCI) with the visionary goal of "training economic leaders." Today, the school is pursuing its mission to achieve higher education that is rooted in the 21st century by "training responsible, innovative and international managers." Montpellier Business School is a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE), which unites the best French Grandes Écoles of management and engineering. It is also a member of the School of Management Chapter of the CGE, which groups together the 40 French Grandes Écoles of management that issue Master's Degrees (Grade de Master). Montpellier Business School has implemented a policy of equal opportunity inspired by the values of openness and diversity and global responsibility and performance. In particular, as a result of this policy, the school has created numerous financial aid packages and scholarships, signed the United Nations Global Compact in 2007, and has obtained the Diversity Label issued by AFNOR (the French standardization agency). The school is one of only two higher education institutions in France to obtain this label among 200 companies that have also received the designation. International policy is integral to the mission of Montpellier Business School, which is reflected in the school's international accreditations. The international dimension begins in cultural exchanges on the campus itself, where international students make up 25% of the student body. It is reinforced by the fact that all students in the Master Grande École program and the Bachelor of International Business Administration program must spend at least one year abroad at a partner university or participate in one or more international academic and entrepreneurial experiences. Furthermore, all programs can be pursued in the French and English languages. Among the international policy measures to promote diversity, External International Recruitment Centers have been set up in various countries, supporting international students who wish to pursue their studies in Europe in general and in Montpellier in particular. Hundreds of companies have close ties to the Group and offer internships to students by giving them assignments during their studies or by taking them on for internships or apprenticeships. Montpellier Business School Business Club brings together the significant companies chosen to support Montpellier Business School in its development strategy and policies. The Group's business ties are also evident in the role that senior executives play in the professional specializations of the last year of the Master Grande École program at the Montpellier Business School and the context of career conferences. Graduates connected to the Business School through the Alumni Association form a network of 11,000 members. Many also return to the school to serve as jury members, attend job fairs, and work as Montpellier Business School ambassadors. The school's innovative and continually evolving academic curriculum and teaching methods enable future managers to introduce a spirit of management innovation into organizations, thus providing sustainable added value. Students are equipped with methods and tools that meet the quality requirements of international standards for accreditation. Montpellier Business School recognizes the core idea that business competitiveness is based on innovation and encourages professors to practice this discipline, resulting in a focus on research, knowledge production, and the generation of analytical frameworks and new methods.

- Created in 2015 through the merger of University Montpellier 1 and University Montpellier 2, the University of Montpellier (UM) draws from these two institutions' excellence and synergy. It is reminiscent of the multi-disciplinary approach taken by the first university established in Montpellier in 1289 as a secular and international university. For eight centuries, renowned scholars and scientists, from Rabelais and Curie to Renaudot, Chaptal, and Grothendieck, shaped this open university. It is deeply embedded in the city's life and committed to the critical challenges of its time. Today, the University of Montpellier brings together an extensive community of knowledge, from science, technology, medicine, and environmental sciences, to educational sciences, economics, management, law, and political science. It is involved in a strategic global initiative aiming at making Montpellier one of the European capitals for Health and Agro-environment. This selection for funding represents a significant success for the entire Montpellier scientific community and a remarkable recognition of its potential and projects. Following its audition on 21 February 2017 by an international jury, the Montpellier University of Excellence project (MUSE) receives the Initiative – Science – Innovation – Territories – Economy (I-SITE) certification. MUSE will bring a phenomenal boost to the entire site, along with accrued visibility on both the national and international higher education-research scene. This result strengthens MUSE's ambition, the largest scientific project ever conceived on the Montpellier site, to address three significant 21st-century challenges: to feed, protect, and heal. "MUSE played the winning card by leveraging Montpellier's strengths in the fields of life science, environmental science, and agriculture and by delivering a collective answer to these three intertwined challenges," reports Philippe Augé, University of Montpellier president. MUSE is committed to conquering new scientific and economic ground via research, training, and innovation. It will contribute to food safety, sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems, and improving treatments for emerging infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and cancers. “MUSE seeks to make Montpellier an international reference in health, environment science, and agriculture” explains François Pierrot, Principal Investigator and coordinator of the project that unites around University of Montpellier a consortium of 10 research organizations (BRGM, CEA, Cirad, CNRS, Ifremer, Inra, Inria, Inserm, IRD, Irstea), 4 schools (ENSAM, ENSCM, EMA, SupAgro), 3 hospitals (CHU Montpellier, CHU Nîmes, Institut de Cancérologie de Montpellier) and 1 international organization (CIHEAM-IAMM). With about 400 researchers permanently settled in the inter-tropical zone, MUSE benefits from a unique network in Southern countries and unrivaled expertise worldwide, in particular thanks to Cirad, IRD, and CNRS know-how. Montpellier is the first site in France for agro-environment-biodiversity and the research leader on new agricultural models and environmental management. The Montpellier site is also a reference in research on emerging infectious diseases and transmission vectors. These two challenges concern mainly Southern countries and are at the core of the project. Rich with its 6,000 scientists and 50,000 students, the MUSE project is strongly and actively supported by the Occitanie / Pyrénées – Méditerranée Region and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole. Creating a thematic research-intensive university that will be recognized internationally will drive all scientific forces forward (agronomy, ecology, biology, and chemistry, hard sciences, engineering, and social sciences). MUSE is a tremendous strategic asset for territorial development. These partners seek to build joint world-class laboratories, place research teams on-campus, co-develop curricula to meet tomorrow's challenges, co-build European projects, and much more.
- Montpellier 2 University was a French university in the academic of Montpellier. It was one of the three universities formed in 1970 from the original University of Montpellier. Its central campus neighbors the Montpellier 3 University's main campus, and for this reason, the nearest tramway station is named "Universities of Sciences and Literature" rather than "University of Sciences." In January 2015, Montpellier 1 University and Montpellier 2 University merged into Montpellier University. The creation of the Imperial University by Napoleon I in 1808 stimulated the formation of several faculties of Humanities and Science in the French Empire's main cities. At that time, Montpellier had already a long-established medical college, a school of Pharmacy, and a respected Royal Society of Sciences created in 1706. In 1810, a Faculty of Science started with initially seven chairs: mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, and mineralogy. In 1879, the faculty created a research station of marine biology in Sète and, twelve years later, and the Institute of Botany. The Institute of Chemistry, created in the same period, became the Ecole Nationale Supérieure of Chemistry of Montpellier in 1941. In 1964, the faculty left the center of Montpellier to settle in a 30-hectare campus to the north of the city on which 146 000 m2 of buildings for teaching and research were built.
- University of Culture, debate, and openness to the world, the University Paul-Valéry is in one of Europe's most ancient es academic traditions and enjoys core strengths, including its environment: a city and a region resolutely turned towards the youth and culture. Located in the heart of the "campus" Montpellier, the Paul-Valéry site invites you to evolve in a bold contemporary architectural complex, where the Mediterranean vegetation, water, and stone combine to serve as a showcase for artworks that beautify the parks, patios, buildings and highlight places of exchange, creation, and expression in the image of the Library of arts, Museum of castings, Theatre La Vignette or student House. Like those of Béziers site, these spaces are tools to enhance the quality of teaching and promote the success and thus the insertion in a professional world that s 'always opens more to the disciplines of Arts, Humanities, Languages, Social Sciences. Paul Valéry is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The University of Montpellier, founded on 26 October 1289 through a bull issued by Pope Nicholas IV combining the schools of Medicine, Arts, and Law, is the third university founded in France, following Paris and Toulouse's. In 1939, the new Faculty of Humanities was built in the city center, facing Saint Paul's Cathedral on the rue du Cardinal de Cabrières (currently home to part of the University of Montpellier 1's Law Faculty), and inaugurated by the then Dean Augustin Fliche.
