We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, computer science, art, education, chemistry, law, and many other fields. Through the academic internship program, students are employed temporarily and are under the direct supervision of a faculty advisor. Registration for one, two, three, or six semester hours of credit is possible. A letter grade is assigned by the faculty advisor for this work experience. The internship committee must approve the internship, and the student must be approved by the academic department in which the credit is being granted. Internships are only open to those students who are juniors or seniors. Mississippi College traces its roots back to 1826 when the state Legislature chartered the institution as Hampstead Academy. The same year, America celebrated its 50th birthday, and John Quincy Adams served as president of a growing nation with a little more than 9.6 million people. Mississippi College remains the oldest institution of higher learning in the Magnolia State. Situated on five acres near Mount Salus in Central Mississippi, the new school was renamed Mississippi Academy and began offering boys and girls classes in January 1827. Back when tracts of land sold for $1.25 per acre, the academy was located on a tiny piece of the 6 million acres of property in Central Mississippi transferred from the Choctaw Indian nation to the American government. That treaty was signed in 1820. Three years earlier, in 1817, the state of Mississippi joined the United States. First-year students are awarded based on their ACT/SAT score, while transfers are awarded based on their GPA. There is no deadline for academic scholarships, meaning this award can increase, according to our matrix, up until the time you enroll. Loans are the largest financial resource available to students. Loans allow students to borrow money at low-interest rates, with no collateral, and generally no co-signer. Most student loans do not need to be repaid until they graduate or drop to less than half-time status. Students are reminded that borrowing money for college is a solemn financial obligation. The University of Mississippi Medical Center, located in Jackson, is the state's only academic health science center. UMMC includes seven health science schools: medicine, nursing, dentistry, health-related professions, graduate studies, population health, and pharmacy. (The School of Pharmacy is headquartered on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.) Enrollment in all programs is more than 3,000 students. The Medical Center's three-part mission is to improve Mississippians' lives by educating tomorrow's health care professionals, conducting health sciences research, and providing cutting-edge patient care. The Medical Center's primary goal is the elimination of differences in the health status of Mississippians based on race, geography, income, or social status. Integral to its education and research missions, UMMC provides wide-ranging patient care programs. Three specialized hospitals on the Jackson campus include the only children's hospital in Mississippi, a women and infants' hospital, a critical care hospital, and University Hospital. UMMC offers the only Level 1 trauma center, the only Level 4 neonatal intensive care nursery unit, and the only organ transplant programs in the state, in addition to many other referral services. University Physicians, the School of Medicine's faculty group practice, includes about 500 doctors, many of them among leaders in their field, who care for patients in the hospitals and clinics on campus, around the Jackson metro area, and in outreach clinics around the state. The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. The Medical Center opened in 1955, but its beginnings date to 1903 when a two-year medical school was established on Oxford's parent campus. In that era, certificate graduates went out of state to complete their doctor of medicine degrees. In its history dating to 1903 on the University of Mississippi campus, the Medical Center has been fortunate to have a series of strong institutional leaders. Over many years, they provided visionary leadership and managed the rapid growth of UMMC after it opened in Jackson in 1955. Finally, in 1950, the Mississippi Legislature - by a one-vote margin - enacted a law to create a four-year medical school. On July 1, 1955, the state's new University Medical Center, or UMC as it was commonly called, opened in Jackson, initially as a four-year medical school with medical and graduate students, interns, and residents. As it had in Oxford, the School of Medicine offered both medical and graduate degree programs. The campus included a teaching hospital and a library. The Medical Center functions as a separately funded, semi-autonomous unit responsible to the chancellor of the University of Mississippi and, through him, to the constitutional Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, which governs all eight state institutions of higher learning in Mississippi. When it chartered the University of Mississippi on February 24, 1844, the Mississippi Legislature laid the foundation for public higher education. The university opened its doors to 80 students four years later and for 23 years was Mississippi's only public institution of higher learning. For 110 years, it was the state's only comprehensive university. UM's research enterprise, including acoustics, atmospheric physics, health care, remote sensing, Southern studies, space law, and pharmaceutical sciences—is renowned internationally. The university holds more than 40 patents for inventions, including a fire ant trap, an algal herbicide, novel drug-delivery systems, a thermoacoustic refrigeration device, immune system stimulators, and possible cancer treatments for malaria, pain, and infections. This work takes place across the university, which is home to more than 20 major research centers.
