    Luther College

Located in the vibrant town of Decorah in northeastern Iowa, Luther is an undergraduate liberal arts college affiliated with the Lutheran Church (ELCA). Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther values its heritage, just as it values the diversity of its students, staff, and faculty, who hail from many faith backgrounds and heritages. The college strives to make Luther affordable for all students by offering scholarships, need-based aid, work-study, and loan programs. Luther offers more than 60 majors and preprofessional programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. The college's learning philosophy highlights connections between disciplines. Its thoughtful and rigorous curriculum moves beyond immediate interests toward engagement in the larger world. This approach to education helps Luther earn inclusion in the top tier of national liberal arts colleges in the U.S. News and World Report's college guide. Luther is a Phi Beta Kappa institution, an honor belonging to only 10 percent of colleges and universities. Its graduates regularly earn awards, such as Fulbright, Rhodes, Goldwater, and NCAA Postgraduate scholarships. Luther's faculty are committed to their areas of expertise—95 percent of them hold the most advanced degree in their field. And because 89 percent are tenured or tenure-track and have earned a permanent position here, they are also committed to Luther. This means that Luther students receive an education from qualified professors passionate about what they teach and fully invested in the college and its students. A student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 gives students an exceptional classroom experience, and Luther's faculty also mentor students, act as advisers, and learn and research in collaboration with students. Luther values learning beyond the classroom. Internships, externships, and opportunities to collaborate with faculty on research are vital components of a Luther education—and they help test career goals and build résumés. This experiential learning contributes to the stellar career outcomes and postsecondary education rates of Luther graduates. Study-away experiences are another way that students learn beyond the classroom, and they are critical to the global perspective that Luther promotes. Each year more than 400 Luther students study abroad in 41 countries. Many undergraduates take advantage of study-away opportunities during January Term, a three-week period between semesters that allows students to study a particular subject in depth. An open-door culture is part of the Luther ethos. Faculty and staff are enthusiastic, accessible, and focused on student success. Luther professors enjoy being a part of the campus community so much that 95 percent of them live within five miles of campus, and 87 percent of students say they have been invited to a professor's home. Luther's 2,050 students are highly engaged in campus life. Almost 27 percent of them compete in one or more of the college's 19 intercollegiate sports, and about 44 percent play intramural sports. Around 875 students participate in the school's six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands, and numerous smaller ensembles, all of which combine to form one of the world's most extensive, most acclaimed collegiate music programs. Student involvement, a Luther hallmark, is also evident in more than 95 student organizations, including a campus newspaper and radio station and many service and honor societies. Luther takes its mission seriously to "joyful practice stewardship of the resources around us." Green campus operations, partnerships with local businesses, and academic courses that incorporate sustainability have earned Luther several environmental leadership awards, including a 2012 Second Nature Climate Leadership Award. The best way to learn about Luther is to visit in person and get a firsthand look at how you might fit into the Luther community. In the reforming spirit of Martin Luther, Luther College affirms the liberating power of faith and learning. As people of all backgrounds, we embrace diversity and challenge one another to learn in community, discern our callings, and serve with distinction for the common good. As a church college, Luther is rooted in an understanding of grace and freedom that emboldens us in worship, study, and service to seek the truth, examine our faith, and care for all God's people. As a liberal arts college, Luther is committed to a way of learning that moves us beyond immediate interests and present knowledge into a larger world—an education that disciplines minds and develops whole persons equipped to understand and confront a changing society. As a residential college, Luther is a place of intersection. Founded where the river, woodland, and prairie meet, we practice joyful stewardship of the resources that surround us, and we strive to be a community where students, faculty, and staff are enlivened and transformed by encounters with one another, by the exchange of ideas, and by the life of faith and learning. Luther College is a private liberal arts college, founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants in the Lutheran tradition of higher education. Our campus is located in beautiful Decorah, Iowa. At Luther, we appreciate that you are a whole person with a variety of interests and talents. We encourage you to explore your passions, discover how your skills can meet the world's needs and connect with the larger world through research, experiential learning, and study abroad programs. We would love to have you visit our campus during a scheduled group visit event or on a day that works for your schedule. We look forward to meeting you.
  4. Our worldwide cooperation with higher education and research institutions makes numerous study, research, and internship opportunities possible. The International Office supports you on your way to Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg or abroad. It advises you on European and global support programs that include language courses and cultural events. It answers your questions concerning organizational issues such as entry into the country, right of residence, living, and insurance. The research group led by Halle-based plant geneticist Professor Ulla Bonas investigates the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and plants for quite some time. The group focuses on Xanthomonas bacteria, which primarily attack tomato and pepper plants. In their earlier work, the Halle lab already proved that the bacteria introduce numerous harmful proteins, so-called effectors, into plant cells via a specialized secretion system that works like a molecular syringe. "This protein cocktail weakens the plant's defenses and allows the bacteria to multiply inside the plants. The plant's age faster, lose their leaves and produce less fruit," says Ulla Bonas. One of these harmful proteins is XopH. The research groups from Halle, Bonn, and Freiburg investigated this particular protein's action mechanism in more detail. Using analytical new methods developed by the Freiburg researchers, they were able to show that the XopH protein targets one of the main phosphorus supplies inside plant cells. "When XopH depletes this supply, it probably not only takes nutrients away from the plant but also prepares it to receive the harmful bacteria," explains Bonas. It is likely that the XopH protein also weakens the plant's defenses and changes its hormonal balance, which is suggested by the fact that the affected plants have a problem to grow. Some host plants have adapted to attacks from Xanthomonas bacteria and can recognize the manipulation through XopH. "We do not know yet how exactly they do this. However, the result is always the same: The diseased tissue dies to seal off the infected area and prevent the pathogenic bacteria from spreading further through the plant tissue," Bonas concludes. The study in "Nature Communications" provides another answer to how bacteria harm plants and how plants react to this threat. However, all in all, much basic research still needs to be carried out to understand the disease process fully: XopH is only one of a total of more than 35 effector proteins that bacteria inject into plants to colonize them. Education and research with a 500-year-old tradition: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range of academic subjects in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and medicine. The oldest and largest university in Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1817 when the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502) merged with Friedrichs University Halle (founded in 1694). Today the university has around 20,000 students and 340 professors. MLU's academic profile in the humanities field is shaped by the core research areas "Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge" and "Society and Culture in Motion. Diffusion - Experiment - Institution". The university's core scientific research is in "Materials Science – Nanostructured Materials" and "Biosciences – Structures and Mechanisms of Biological Information Processing." Agricultural sciences also play a leading role, and Halle's university bears sole responsibility in Saxony-Anhalt for developing this academic profile. The Faculty of Medicine focuses on epidemiology, health and nursing research, and research on signal transmission. Here nursing scientists research an equal footing with physicians. The Dorothea Erxleben Learning Centre is one of the largest teaching clinics for prospective medical professionals. In addition to its primary academic focuses, the university offers a range of minor subjects, some of which are only offered in Germany at MLU. As a Central German University Alliance Halle-Jena-Leipzig member, MLU cooperates closely with other universities and with external research institutes and industries. This is visible at a local level on the Weinberg Campus, the second largest technology park in Eastern Germany. All of the university's natural science institutes are concentrated here. They work in partnership with companies and significant German research institutes, such as the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Halle's university has a broad-reaching network of partner universities throughout the world. In addition to the Weinberg Campus, MLU has three other central locations. The centrally located University Square is one of the most beautiful university squares in Europe, and it is a site in Halle that is steeped in tradition. Many institutes focusing on the humanities and social sciences are located on the new Steintor Campus. Educationalists and theologians teach, study, and conduct research at the Francke Foundations. As the most prominent university in Saxony-Anhalt, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg cooperates with more than 200 higher education institutions from around the world in study programs and joint research projects. With this cooperation, our university offers you many varied opportunities to participate in these international activities. Please become part of our university community and enrich our university and city life alongside 2,100 other international students and 23,000 students from Halle. Check out our internet pages and get an idea of our university steeped in tradition and the lively city of Halle (Saale), no matter whether you are looking for opportunities to go abroad or for study and research opportunities at our university. The International Office informs and advises you on funding, support, and language courses.

  8. Many people describe their high school years as some of the best years of their lives. It's a time for learning, for friendships, for fun. It's also a time when you begin to prepare yourself for a lifetime of Christian service. That means that your choice of a high school will affect you not only for the next four years, but it will help to set the direction for your entire adult life. Luther Prep offers many things that Christian young people and their parents value. At LPS all of our teachers, dormitory staff, and students share your faith in Christ and your trust in the Word of God. All classes are taught from a Christ-centered perspective. The curriculum is a solid college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on religion, English, history, science, math, and music. The courses are designed especially to prepare students for Martin Luther College, but they also equip students to attend any college of their choice. With the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit, this school will strive: To proclaim, teach, and apply faithfully the Word of God in all courses of instruction and all other areas of campus life, in keeping with the Holy Scriptures and the teachings of the Lutheran Confessions To promote continuing spiritual growth and faithful Christian discipleship among all members of our campus family through the use of the means of grace To provide a challenging academic course of study in religion, languages, history, science, mathematics, and the arts, to prepare students for continuing their preparation for full-time ministry To enable all students to develop their God-given talents by providing them with a wide range of opportunities in the areas of music, forensics, drama, athletics, social life, and Christian service To promote the high calling of the public ministry through the continuing recruitment and retention of qualified students and a positive image of the ministry among faculty members To deal lovingly and evangelically with each student as a redeemed child of God, offering counseling, encouragement, and loving Christian discipline To regard seriously the great trust that parents have placed in the school and to deal with all of our students in a way that reflects our role as caretakers and parental representatives. Luther Preparatory School is a four-year secondary school owned and operated by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. It offers a challenging college preparatory curriculum in grades 9-12 to students who are considering the full-time pastoral or teaching ministry as their life’s work. Luther Preparatory School is the oldest Lutheran high school in the United States. It traces its history to its founding on this campus in 1865 as the prep department of Northwestern College. The prep department was given its own identity in 1974 as Northwestern Preparatory School. Luther Prep today is the result of a merger of Northwestern Preparatory School of Watertown, Wisconsin, and Martin Luther Preparatory School of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Martin Luther Preparatory School had been established in 1979 when Martin Luther Academy was moved from its original home on the campus of Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, and when Northwestern Lutheran Academy in Mobridge, South Dakota, was closed. Luther Preparatory School is the successor school to those prep schools which have preceded it and can readily claim the heritage and history of these schools as its own.

  12. Luther College High School is a historically independent high school offering grades 9-12, located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Luther College was established in 1913 and consisted of a high school campus and a post-secondary campus, federated with the University of Regina. Our motto "Quality Education in a Christian context" refers to our emphasis on the whole person's education intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically—within a progressive Christian context where principles of love, community, grace, and forgiveness are paramount. Students pay tuition to attend, and the provincial government also partially funds Luther College. Luther is not a "private school" in that a real private school receives no government funding. Luther offers the Saskatchewan government-regulated curriculum; the university recognized International Baccalaureate program, and diverse liberal arts programming. Luther College also relies on alumni and donors' generosity and philanthropy to support our programs, facilities, scholarships, and financial assistance opportunities. The High School campus completed an 18.3 million dollar expansion in 2014, which includes a new performance stage, three new classrooms (two of which are dedicated to fine arts), a new gymnasium and a student fitness training center, our first student commons area, and upgrades to existing structures. The school also has fully renovated science laboratories and extensively upgraded on-campus dormitories. Our school population is approximately 420 students, with 13% of them from international locations such as Nigeria, Vietnam, India, Israel, USA, Philippines, Ukraine, and China, to name a few! We have an on-campus dormitory with space for 50 boys and 50 girls. The average class size is 23 students. Our student-teacher ratio is 17:1. Students admitted to Luther College are not required to be Lutheran or Christian. We value diversity in every aspect of our school population. By welcoming students of all backgrounds, Luther College enjoys a richly diverse student body. International students should have some English language skills before applying. Our ESL coordinator tests all international students as part of the admissions process. Students should apply by March 1 for the September start date of the school year. Admission is also accepted for students to start in semester 2 (February). Luther College has an outstanding academic program and university preparation with at least 96 percent of graduates going on to post-secondary education, including institutions such as the University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan, University of Toronto, Dartmouth, John Hopkins, McGill, Harvard, Oxford, Yale, and Queen's. Our alumni have been Rhodes Scholars and Nobel Prize Winners. Since 1953, Luther College has hosted the Luther Invitational Tournament – the longest-running high school basketball tournament in Western Canada, recently inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame. Since 1973, Luther College has presented an annual Broadway musical. We value excellence in teaching and care for our students as individuals in the community. Luther College High School follows the curriculum established by the Government of Saskatchewan. All of Luther College's courses are in the academic stream, leading to intense university studies preparation. In addition to the required courses, Luther College High School students must take a course in Christian Ethics for each year of their enrollment. Luther College works within the semester system. Students are allowed to take a maximum of six courses per semester. At every grade level, there are specific courses students must pass in order to graduate. These courses are known as compulsory courses. Other courses, however, are optional. Students may choose which ones they wish to take to fulfill the requirements for their Grade 12 diploma. Each spring, students select their courses for the upcoming school year by completing the appropriate form. A deposit must accompany the course selection form. Classes fill up very quickly on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students submitting late requests risk not being admitted or waitlisted for classes. To be eligible for a Luther College High School diploma, students must receive prior permission from the administration to take any credit classes outside Luther College High School. These grades will not be used in any average calculations, which may mean the student will be excluded from scholarship and honor pin consideration. Luther College has an excellent reputation for developing students' academic skills to be well prepared for post-secondary studies. Our ESL program's objective is to equip international students with the requisite English language skills for finding academic success both at Luther and at a post-secondary institution of their choosing. The ESL program uses a mixture of classroom and one-on-one instruction to ensure individual needs are being assessed and supported in a positive and caring learning environment. Benchmarked by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the ESL program uses a three-step approach that helps graduate students from communicative confidence to autonomous learning. In addition to our academic pursuits, the ESL program at Luther helps to support our students' non-academic needs. Our "International Minded" staff member helps to facilitate opportunities for our students to join the high school through many events and activities. These include the International Café, school buddies, and a wide variety of other activities that help our new students feel welcome and part of the Luther family. Students in our program are all encouraged to join afterschool clubs, sports teams, arts (drama, musical theatre, and choir). Through these experiences, our students gain more motivation to practice and use their newly-acquired language skills. These activities help create a positive high school experience, where our students are given a chance to make friends and expand their experiences. View full school

  15. View full school
