      1. Ibaraki University has a 65-year history dating back to May 1949, when it started as a national university under Japan's new educational system. It was formed by integrating the former educational system's Mito High School, Ibaraki Normal School, Ibaraki National School for Youth, and Taga Technical College. Today, the university has developed into a mid-size national university with five undergraduate and four graduate schools. Approximately 8,400 students are studying at the university. In addition to cultivating human beings who are generous, highly ethical, and sociable and seek after truth, Ibaraki University strives to achieve the creation, accumulation, systematization, and transmission of "Knowledge." The university offers diverse educational programs and facilitates high-level research, contributing to world peace, the human race's welfare, and coexistence with nature. And it reforms itself so that it can respond to changes in society. Ibaraki University has consistently aimed to develop outstanding human resources through teaching and research. In our modern age, the world is being rapidly transformed by ongoing globalization. In Japan, we face pressing issues such as a shrinking population and the aging of society, disaster readiness, and environmental problems. In our fast-changing society, I believe that it is crucial for Ibaraki University's students to continue growing even after graduation and thereby succeed in their endeavors. To this end, Ibaraki University emphasizes "active learning," which is focused on developing practical knowledge and skills, and a liberal arts education that fosters a broad perspective. In doing so, we are working to reform education (i.e., shift the quality of education) from "teaching" to "active learning." Going further, we are developing a diverse learning environment that supports our students' growth by upgrading and expanding international exchange student programs, where students study abroad at universities in Asia and Western countries, along with short-term training programs. Another feature of Ibaraki University is that we are firmly rooted in the local region and help build sustainable regional communities. To date, we have built up an extensive track record in such areas as joint research with local corporations, environmental preservation and natural energy development, disaster readiness, and support for the town development initiatives of local governments. We have just initiated a project to make the university a new regional center of knowledge, with the launch in April 2014 of the Social Collaboration Center. Looking ahead, we intend to advance an even broader range of activities to expand our circle of collaboration with Ibaraki Prefecture, municipalities, corporations, civic groups, and others. On the research front, Ibaraki University has produced significant achievements in many different areas, notably material sciences, atomic sciences, climate change issues, biofuel, environmental improvement of Lake Kasumigaura, and recovery from earthquake and radiation disasters. We seek to create specific fields by further strengthening our advanced research activities. We strive to make Ibaraki University's research achievements widely known across Japan and the rest of the world. Universities are vital organs of society that are crucial to building a sustainable regional society. Keeping this firmly in mind, Ibaraki University will practice open management to contribute to society's development through teaching, research, regional collaboration, and internationalization. Ibaraki University furnishes a variety of learning opportunities both as a place for learning. The students who will build the future can act freely and spontaneously and place where the local populace can continue to study. Deepening understanding of human culture and society, and nature, the university promotes a highly ethical citizenry who can bear responsibility for a sustainable society and environmental conservation. The university nurtures experienced persons who can acquire expert knowledge and technical skills and design a future based on their ideals and the ability to search for research topics and solve problems. At the graduate level, Ibaraki University produces high-level, extremely creative professionals and researchers with extensive scholarship, expert knowledge, and technical skills who can keep pace with academic research and scientific techniques.
      2. Modern-day medical settings witness a wide variety of health professionals working together as teams. These situations are often described using terms such as inter-professional collaboration, inter-professional cooperation, and team-based medicine. But a common requirement of all professionals in such settings is advanced skills, and such skills and professional knowledge are learned by students in the Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Radiological Science departments of our School of Health Sciences. A thorough grounding in science is also a prerequisite to building this professionalism, combined with understanding and communicating with professionals of other disciplines in the medical workplace. Besides, a great sense of humanity is called to understand the ill and infirm. The Center for Humanities and Sciences and Center for Medical Sciences provide the foundations that support the acquisition of a broad understanding of liberal arts and science that underpins medicine. Practical education is also vital, and the University Hospital supports this from an early stage in the undergraduate curriculum. After graduation, as they build their medical settings experience, various questions will arise for these health professionals. They will have a mind to resolve those questions through research and applying the latest knowledge. More than 3,000 students have graduated from the School of Health Sciences, the Graduate School of Health Sciences, and the Graduate Program in Midwifery. They are active as health professionals in Ibaraki and throughout Japan. In this low birth rate, rapidly aging society, well-qualified medical practitioners' role with leadership skills becomes increasingly important. As your first step to a purposeful and fulfilling career, we invite you to follow in their footsteps and pursue your studies at Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences.
      3. Ibaraki Christian Education Community, based on Christian principles, was established in 1947. The following year Ibaraki Christian Junior College was formed. With the same spirit of Christian liberal arts education, Ibaraki Christian College of Literature was established in 1967. In 2000 the College of Life Science was added, then in 2004, the College of Nursing, and in 2011 the College of Business Administration was added. Since that time, we have made every effort to strengthen our overall university programs. Graduate schools were also established. In 1995 the College of Literature set up two graduate programs, then in 2011, the College of Life Sciences and the Nursing College set up graduate programs. Our institution of higher education is seeking to answer the needs of our community. We also have two pre-school and kindergartens, a junior high school and a high school under our umbrella. As a comprehensive school, we are based on the Christian concept of "loving our neighbor," continually seeking to give our students a well-rounded education. "Loving our neighbors" is a concept we use when we say "Living Together" or sharing our lives. The triple disaster in Eastern Japan in 2011 took many lives and left behind numerous difficulties, many with which we are still contending. Even immediately after the disaster, our students have been active in volunteer activities in this stressful situation. We are proud of the spirit of assistance that our students have shown in working with people in their communities and elsewhere. We believe this clearly shows they are carrying out the neighborly love we hold to be valuable. Recently, while actively interacting with our community, we are also becoming more and more cognizant of our global responsibilities. From the beginning, our institution has stressed English education. We have sent our students to schools in English speaking countries as exchange students and have also welcomed many native English speakers to our campus. In the 21st century, we have added programs to sister schools in other countries, especially Asian countries, and expanded our own and our students' world view. In our expanding global society, We believe we must be careful not to fall into a narrow-minded, skewed nationalism but continue the "Living Together" approach as we relate with those around us. To become a university that is trusted both in the community and on a global scale, what must Ibaraki Christian do? First, we must provide a high-quality education. One of our school's qualities is the closeness of the relationships between students and faculty and staff. To help each of our students grow in various ways, we must provide this education through intimate and caring communication. Another good quality of our school is the excellence of assistance provided by our Career Support Center. The staff works carefully with each student to help them come ever closer to their dream job and support them in every way possible. We commit ourselves to continue the development of our "Living Together" philosophy and strengthening our institution as we work toward our 50th anniversary. A place where students and faculty and staff work together, where the school and the community work hand-in-hand, where local and global societies mesh in unity…that is Ibaraki Christian University.
