Both DU and Denver rose out of the Colorado frontier and have developed in tandem ever since. We were founded in 1864 as the Colorado Seminary, only six years after the founding of Denver City in the Colorado Territory. As Denver grew from a gold rush boom town with a population of around 3,000 into one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities of the interior West, we too evolved from our roots as a Methodist seminary into a global intellectual center in a city on the rise. Our first female and African American graduates earned their degrees in 1886 and 1900, respectively. We established one of the first business schools in the country and the first school of social work between the Mississippi and the West Coast. Football teams from the NFL and the AFL played each other for the first time on our campus. During the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. visited and became a center of protest for the region. As we entered the 21st century, we modernized our campus and renewed our commitment to academic excellence and inclusion. Our students and faculty continue to drive our development. There has never been a better time to be a Sun Devil! Since our founding in 1922, Kent Denver has delivered the highest quality college preparatory experience in the Mountain West. Over the past 96 years, more than 7,000 students have earned a Kent Denver diploma, thrived at top colleges and universities, and gone on to lead full, meaningful, self-determined lives. Our 200-acre campus is in the midst of an exciting transformation. In March 2018, our students moved into a new, state-of-the-art Middle School building. A new Visual Arts Center will welcome Upper- and Middle-School students in the fall of 2018, and, in the spring of 2019, we will complete construction on an Upper School classroom building and welcome center. In total, we are creating more than 100,000 square feet of cutting-edge instructional spaces designed to foster the best possible learning environment and encourage innovation by teachers and students alike. Today, our academic curriculum offers more than 140 exceptional courses taught by some of the country's best faculty: 69% of our teachers have advanced degrees, and several have been awarded Ph.D.s.—the highest level of academic achievement in their chosen discipline. In the early days of the University, students dubbed themselves “Roadrunners” because they sprinted across downtown Denver’s busy streets to get to classes. In 1974, students named the Roadrunner the University’s mascot.
