  1. Oxford Brookes University has over 150 years of history. We started as a small School of Art in borrowed teaching rooms and have grown into one of the UK's top modern universities with a local, national, and international reputation for teaching and research excellence. We have a lot to be proud of and see some of our recent results and achievements here. Oxford Brookes is thinking globally, growing our international footprint, and furthering our already world-leading research. Significant investment in our estate has already resulted in multi-award-winning facilities, and this investment carries on with a £220 million investment over the next ten years. We are also continuing to drive teaching excellence. Our high student satisfaction with teaching quality results from exceptional academics who are talented, supported in their career development, and creative in their delivery. This provides our engaged students with a stimulating learning experience, including opportunities to develop skills both inside and outside their studies, with co-curricular projects to fuel their enthusiasm and hone their abilities. Our university's character is evident in our graduates who use the connections and experiences they gain during their time with us to achieve career success and make a difference to the world. Our many achievements are also down to our fantastic and dedicated staff, all 2,800 of them. Together with our students, alumni, partners, and local supporters, we are a close community, vital to our ongoing success. We are proud of our home in Oxford, one of the UK's most vibrant cities, and one to which we make a significant economic, social, and cultural contribution. We are committed to delivering an outstanding student experience. We do this by providing the highest standards of learning and teaching and actively involving students in shaping their futures. Our Programme to Enhance the Student Experience (PESE) includes the Creating and Sustaining Mentoring initiative bringing together all our different mentoring schemes and making it easier for students to take advantage of unique mentoring opportunities. The further development of world-class research, furthering our international outlook, a positive commitment to our wider community, and creating sector-leading, high-quality services for the future. Our students and graduates are known for their employability. Employers today want graduates with proven work-based skills to go further than a degree providing work placements, industry experts, opportunities to study and work abroad, volunteering, and integrated career guidance. Students benefit from the strong links we have with businesses and employers both locally and internationally, from local schools and hospitals to Oxfam, BMW, KPMG, Ferrari, and Microsoft. Our programs are accredited by 36 professional bodies across 17 subject areas and recognized by leading employers. Oxford Brookes University began life as the Oxford School of Art in 1865. It occupied one room on the ground floor of the Taylor Institution in the center of the city. Five years later, the School of Science was incorporated. Classes in a range of scientific and technical subjects were available. As well as evening classes in the University Museum. In 1891 the School was taken over by the Technical Instruction Committee (part of Oxford City Council) and renamed Oxford City Technical School. John Henry Brookes became Vice-Principal of the Oxford City Technical School and Head of the School of Art in 1928. Over the next 30 years, he worked on the development of the institution. His goal was to make education available to all. In 1949, the School moved to a 25-acre site in Headington. Brookes referred to the move as ''setting foot in the Promised Land'' Lord Nuffield laid the foundation stone six years later. Over the years, there were more mergers and name changes. Finally, in 1992 it was named Oxford Brookes University. Today, Oxford Brookes University is a thriving community of staff and students. Committed to helping our students achieve their potential. And to become graduates prepared for fulfilling and useful lives. John Henry Brookes (JHB) was an artist and craftsman, teacher, and outstanding educationalist. He is often described as the spiritual founder of Oxford Brookes University. JHB was born in Northampton in Victorian times. His father was a highly skilled bootmaker, and his mother a tailoress. Craftsmanship and teaching were an integral part of his family history. He became Vice-Principal of the Oxford City Technical School and Head of the School of Art in 1928. Over the next 30 years, he exerted a powerful influence on the development of the institution. Throughout his life, he was committed to the goal of making education available to all. In 1992 Oxford Polytechnic became a university and decided to honor its founding Principal, John Brookes, in its new title. Oxford Brookes University. We encourage our students to become active citizens, and they are regularly engaged in social action. Our award-winning social entrepreneur program encourages social innovation, with students bidding for funding and setting up their social enterprises to address a range of social and environmental problems. In 2017, nursing students won funding to develop their project to research the needs of non-trauma limb amputees in the UK to identify what can be done to improve the emotional and psychological support. Students volunteer both abroad and locally in the UK, getting involved with many charities. Volunteering provides a valuable springboard into their careers. View full university
