    Bosco College

The Bosco Centre is a friendly, caring environment for young people and their families. The Centre provides a safe, educational setting for babies and young children at our Day Nursery, for school children at our Junior (after school) club, and for those at secondary school and above at the Senior Youth Clubs - for those aged between 15 and 19 at our Bosco College. We offer training at all levels, from where you left off in learning, to where you want to be. You can slot in at your level from foundation to advanced apprenticeships and even to teaching. Our students at college can remain with us until 25 years of age, as long as they are progressing. There's a place for anyone motivated to learn and develop good career and personal skills. From birth to the workplace, the Bosco Centre provides education, support, advice, activities, and most importantly - a safe place to be with friends and caring people. It's not just a Nursery. It's not just a youth club. It's not just a College. The Bosco Nursery is one of the leading providers of childcare in the area and is consistently deemed a good provider by Ofsted. Our nursery caters to 34 children between the ages of 1 to 5 years and is open Monday – Thursday 8 am-6 pm and Fridays 8 am-5 pm so that parents have flexibility in dropping off and picking up their children. For our young people who want to consider childcare as a career, the nursery offers a chance to experience what it is like and help them decide on whether they would want to progress onto an apprenticeship. Bosco Centre Day Nursery was established in 1985. It grew from a small crèche to help local mums into what we have now: a first-rate day-care nursery for children from the age of 1 year to 5 years, offering full-time and part-time day sessions. We provide an environment that is safe, warm, caring, stimulating, and welcoming for you and your child with fun, early education in a well-planned, child-friendly environment. Our nursery is a place where your child will enjoy and learn during their early developmental years. We aim to provide and adapt to your child’s individual needs. A Unique, High Quality, User-Friendly, Education and Community Centre, for young people and their families, which values the uniqueness and dignity of each individual. The priority user group will be those who wish to take up the opportunities for self-development, particularly those who have been, in any way, excluded from or failed by “society’s institutions". To support and empower our young people and their families (with a particular emphasis on those who are disadvantaged and discriminated against in any way by society’s institution), to be constructive in their community, as honest, caring, responsible adults, who are effective employable citizens. We have been working with young people for over 20 years to help them get a career. Our students are encouraged and supported to build themselves a career, despite any personal challenges they may have. We look at where you are now and where you want to be when you leave us. We’ll help you choose the right pathway for you and provide the space for you to achieve your goals, giving you the freedom to learn at your own pace but also helping build self-discipline. We work with you to develop a plan so that you can gain qualifications to get a job. All our qualifications are national and recognized by employers. So whichever course you take, you know you will have a head start if you complete it. We have successfully managed our two main learning programs - Foundation Learning and Apprenticeships, for over 14 years, so you can have confidence in using our experience to help you fulfill your ambition. Opportunities occur during the year for you to visit the school and to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher. We actively encourage and promote parental involvement in the school. When parents, guardians, teachers, and management are working together, the children flourish. The school enjoys the ongoing support of the Parents’ Committee. The school encourages punctuality but accepts that late arrivals do and will happen, but it is most important that lateness does not prevent attendance. 10. We try to provide children with the best possible start to their education and want them to be happy, enjoy learning, and coming to school. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to achieve to their full potential and offer a broad and balanced curriculum to support this. Working in partnership between home and school is of great importance in supporting children's learning and celebrating their success. At St John Bosco R.C. Primary School we aim to be like Jesus in everything we do. In our daily work, we try to improve our mind, body, and spirit so that we can make the most of the talents which have been given to us by God. If you have a child who will be 3 before 1st September 2016 and you would like them to attend St John Bosco School Nursery please make sure that you have completed an application form and returned it to the school office by the closing date, Friday 16th February 2018. Application forms can be collected from the school office or downloaded from the school website. Please do contact the school office if you would like to arrange a visit. St John Bosco is a Roman Catholic Primary School provided by Manchester LEA as a voluntary aided primary school. The school’s Governing Body is the admission authority and is responsible for taking decisions on applicants for admission. For the school year commencing September 2018, the Governing Body has determined that the number of children to be admitted to Reception will be 30. Our Statement on British Values outlines how our school promotes the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. All staff in schools and early year settings must maintain professional standards of care and ensure that children and young people are safe. Whilst there is no legal duty requiring staff to administer medication or to supervise a child when taking medicines, it is good practice and meets with the Every Child Matters agenda. It is expected good practice that schools and settings will review cases individually and administer medicines to meet the all-around needs of the child and to enable them to attend school. Under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995, schools and settings are under a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled children, including those with medical needs. All provisions should be planned with the intention of ensuring access to their full educational entitlement. Where pupils have incurred injuries that restrict their mobility for example as a result of fractures, schools and settings should consider what reasonable adjustments they need to make to enable them to participate fully in all areas of school life, including educational visits and sporting activities. Governing bodies are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the school. This includes the establishment, monitoring, and evaluation of school policies including a policy for medicines. In developing school policies Governing Bodies should take into account the views of parents/carers, the staff, and the Headteacher and ensure that the policy supports all pupils to attend school wherever possible. Staff, including supply staff, must always be informed of a child’s medical needs where this is relevant and of any changes to their needs as and when they might arise. All staff will be informed of the designated person(s) with responsibility for medical care, which at St John Bosco School is the headteacher. The Headteacher, or, in their absence, the authorized member of senior staff (deputy Headteacher or SENCo), has the ultimate responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people goes beyond implementing basic child protection procedures. It is an integral part of all activities, functions, culture, and ethos of St John Bosco RC Primary School. This policy complements and supports other relevant school and Local Authority policies, including Child Protection, Safer Recruitment, and internet and e-safety. St John Bosco RC Primary School aims to create and maintain a safe learning environment where all children and adults feel safe, secure, and valued and know they will be listened to and taken seriously. Our school is committed to the principles outlined in ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015’ and implements policies, practices, and procedures which promote safeguarding and the emotional and physical well-being of children, young people, and staff. The school is committed to supporting the delivery of effective early help through multiagency working, a consistent application of the thresholds, and the use of a single agency assessment using the ‘Signs of Safety, strengths based model. Children have access to appropriate curriculum opportunities, including emotional health and well-being, to support the development of the skills needed to help them stay safe and healthy, develop their self-esteem and understand the responsibilities of adult life, particularly regarding child care and parenting skills. All children have access to an appropriate curriculum that is broad and balanced and differentiated to meet their needs. This enables them to learn to develop the necessary skills to build self-esteem, respect others, defend those in need, resolve conflict without resorting to violence, question, and challenge and make informed choices in later life. Children and young people are encouraged to express and discuss their ideas, thoughts, and feelings through a variety of activities and have access to a range of cultural opportunities which promote the fundamental British values of tolerance, respect, understanding, and empathy for others. 12. Our identity as a Catholic school and our school’s distinctive Salesian ethos is based on St John Bosco’s vision that ‘it is not enough for every child to be loved… they must know that they are loved. We are proud to be a Christian community where everyone can flourish and every child is known by name. St John Bosco’s educational philosophy was rooted in faith and has been summarized as ‘reason, religion and kindness. We educate our pupils with these three words in mind, focusing on their academic and spiritual development and modeling the values of love and forgiveness found in the gospel. “Pupils mix well in this harmonious environment and benefit from personalized support and guidance” Ofsted May 2017 Our curriculum is carefully designed to make sure it meets the needs of all our students with a good range of options at both GCSE and A-Level. Students enjoy being at the school and appreciate the care and guidance given to them by staff to support them as they grow into young adults. “The school’s vision that ‘it is not enough for young people to be loved, they must know that they are loved’ permeates the school’s culture” Ofsted May 2017 Developing Young People is the Essence of our School: Our purpose is to fulfill the extraordinary human and spiritual potential of each student. As they grow up we offer them the knowledge and skills necessary to engage creatively in the lifelong task of growing to human and spiritual maturity. Educating the Heart is the Key to All Excellence: Only when a school radiates an atmosphere of deep appreciation, mutual respect, and genuine affection can excellent academic, spiritual, moral, and physical education take place. Education to the Faith Marks us as Different: We see education as fundamentally part of a spiritual quest, to which all teaching and learning contributes. We offer our students the experience of being part of a living Catholic community, where faith, life, and learning are integrated. We prepare them to become valuable members of society, able to earn their living and contribute to the common good. Prayer, worship, and the sacraments form the context for Religious Education and encourage the engagement of students in practical outreach to those less fortunate than themselves. Highest Academic Standards: Our school is committed to achieving the highest standards of learning and teaching for all its students. Every student will be offered the teaching, guidance, and support necessary for them to achieve the highest standards that they are capable of. Regular assessment, target setting, and reviews will enable students, parents governors, and staff to check on their progress and promote the highest standards. Education is Wider than Just the Classroom: Extra-curricular activities promote genuine inter-personal dialogue between adults and the young and are the key to an excellent education. Both staff and students will be open to listening and learning, engaging together in exploring their knowledge and deepening understanding of the new horizons that our world constantly presents. At the heart of the ethos is the teaching of the Catholic Church and the educational approach of Saint John Bosco. The educational philosophy of Don Bosco can be condensed into three words: reason, religion, and kindness. The basic principle of his system was a deep understanding and love for young people and their problems. His motto, 'it is not enough for every child to be loved, they must know that they are loved' embodies his approach perfectly. Our school ethos is summed up by RUAH: Respect, Understanding, Affection, and Humour. These four principles underpin every aspect of our school life and together spell out the Hebrew word for 'breath of life' or 'spirit'. Pupils enjoy a school life that is supported by prayer, worship, a celebration of the Eucharist, and excellent chaplaincy provision. Also, high-quality personalized learning helps all pupils to achieve their potential, whether they need excellent academic training or a more vocational approach. The aims of the Curriculum are: To ensure that all students develop and fulfill their potential. To provide opportunities for students to achieve good outcomes and move onto the next stage of learning successfully. To provide an education that is appropriate to the demands of the future. To encourage our students to adopt a problem-solving approach to their studies. To provide an educational framework appropriate to each student's age, ability and aptitude i.e. to meet the needs of all learners. To provide students with the skills to aid their progress into independent, self-motivated learners within a framework of clear expectations and an appropriate code of behavior. To encourage in those we teach independence of mind, and enjoyment of learning and confidence in their potential, sharing and celebrating success and achievement whenever possible. To provide a curriculum that focuses on children's core skills in Mathematics, English, and Science. To enable each student to become a sensible and responsible adult, developing self-esteem, self-discipline, and respect for others. Saint John Bosco College believes that effective assessment systems enhance progress and ultimately achievement. Rigorous assessment allows all pupils to be supported and challenged for all subjects in all years. All students are set aspirational yet realistic targets for all subjects in all years. Targets are set based on a variety of information including end of Key Stage 2 scores for English and Maths, FFT D, and internal benchmarking. Targets are reviewed every half term to ensure pupils are set appropriately and no ceiling is placed on achievement. View full school

  14. Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong (DBTC) is a private Catholic educational institution in Manila, Philippines, owned and operated by the Salesians of Don Bosco.DBTC offers all-boys Elementary and an academic and technical curriculum Junior High School education, co-educational Senior High and Tertiary education, and vocational training for out-of-school youth. Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong is the first Don Bosco Educational Center in Metro Manila. We are an ASEAN-recognized and learner-centered institute of technological and technical education. Following the Salesian charism, we form an Educative-Pastoral Community of lifelong learners and agents of social change. Faithful to Catholic teachings, we champion holistic personal growth and integral ecology. Mindful of our Filipino heritage, we promote active participation and collaboration to uphold social justice and equity. We work for total human development by providing an academically rigorous and innovative environment that forms the young to be qualified and competent workers, entrepreneurs, and professionals who embody the ideals of justice with charity, prosperity with integrity, and technology with a soul. Don Bosco Technical College stands on historic and hallowed grounds. The 18th-century Spanish building (1716) at the heart of the campus is a testimony to events that led to the 1896 uprising of the country's patriots, the Katipuneros, against the Spanish colonizers. The building later became the Asilo de Mandaloya, an orphanage where the saintly Mother Consuelo Barcelo y Pages stayed for 16 years (1883-1899). She co-founded the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation. Her cause for canonization has been introduced. Early in the 20th century, the building became the San Carlos Seminary, home to form the local clergy. One of them was Rufino Cardinal Santos, the first Filipino cardinal of the Church. Don Bosco-Mandaluyong opened as a school on 2 June 1953 with 47 first-year high school students. More and more students heard of this different school, with an innovative dual academic and technical curriculum. By its first graduation in 1957, the elementary and high school levels' enrollment increased tremendously, representing a cross-section and a happy blend of the poor and the affluent. From its crude beginning, the Salesian work in Mandaluyong immediately gained efficiency and prominence. By January 1954, the feast of the Epiphany, Fr. Mario Acquistapace, SDB (Provincial Superior), declared Don Bosco-Mandaluyong "the motherhouse of the Salesian works in the Philippines." Since its foundation, Don Bosco-Mandaluyong has grown into a complex setting whose services include the following departments: Grade School, High School, College of Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Information Technology, Manpower Skills and Training Center, Center for Research and Training, Information Systems and Technology Center, together with the Don Bosco Youth Center, St. Dominic Savio Parish, and the Pinardi Boarding House for Migrant Youth. The College Department made history in 2004 with the acceptance of 28 first-year females. By going coed, Don Bosco Mandaluyong states a world where women are devalued and degraded that men must relate with women as equal in dignity and complementary in their vocation "Pro Deo et Patria." The primary grades were revived in the Mandaluyong campus in the school year 2005-2006. In 1989, seven sections, each of grades 1 to 4, were moved to the Salesian Sisters' school in Sta. Mesa, Manila. Because of the dwindling number of boys enrolling in Don Bosco School Manila's primary levels, the Mandaluyong campus reopened the primary levels for consistency in character formation and curriculum development, specifically information literacy well as for earlier intervention in family life. Don Bosco-Mandaluyong takes pride, too, in its students who have given back to life in no half measures. The names of Roderick Flores and Sigmund Occasion were included among the twenty-eight "Fruits of the Preventive System" presented as holiness models to the whole Salesian world by the Rector Major, Fr. Pascual Chavez, SDB, who visited the school on its golden jubilee in 2003. Giovanni Bosco (Don Bosco) was born to a poor farmer's family on 16 August 1815 in Becchi, in Northern Italy's countryside, near Turin. After his priestly ordination in 1841, Don Bosco moved to Turin to continue his studies. As a priest, part of his work was to visit the prisons around Turin, where young boys were imprisoned together with serious criminals. In the streets, he met homeless boys roaming around aimlessly; most of them were jobless. Don Bosco was profoundly touched by their circumstances and decided to dedicate himself to their wellbeing. The core of his work was done in the "Oratory," which started as a Sunday school where Don Bosco would meet boys from the street for worship, breakfast, and catechesis. Likewise, by offering vocational training, the boys started to learn a trade and earn an honest living. As a Catholic priest, Don Bosco worshiped catechesis and confessed to teaching the boys to become good Christians. Don Bosco developed a pedagogical approach to work with the boys to prevent dysfunctional behavior through proactive encouragement, not enforcing authority. He called this "The Preventive System".The critical element in the system was the constant presence of educators among the boys. As Don Bosco calls it, the preventive system is based on the triad: reason, religion, and loving-kindness. When his work was growing too big, the 'Salesians' congregation was founded, followed by the establishment of the order of 'Salesian Sisters' and the 'Salesian Cooperators' for laypeople. When Don Bosco died on 31 January 1888, the Don Bosco Movement was only starting. Today, more than two hundred years after Don Bosco's death, the Salesians and their Lay Mission Partners are present in 134 countries worldwide. View full university
