St. Anthony's is a Catholic Voluntary Aided, co-educational Primary School for children aged 3 - 11 years. It serves the Parish of St. Anthony's although children do come from other parishes and non-Catholic families. The present school was built in 1969 to replace the old school. A separate nursery unit was built in 1972 with a further extension to this in 2000. The building is flat-roofed and of brick and wood construction. There are large playing fields and a playing yard. Before starting at St Anthony’s, visits are made by our Early Years Specialist and support staff to nurseries and Early Years settings to get to know the children. Careful planning and discussion are undertaken to ensure that your child’s needs are fully catered for. At the end of the summer term, pupils can meet with their new teacher during our class swap day to prepare for the transition to their new year group. This is based on the needs of pupils within each year group and also the short and long-term targets set in the annual School Development Plan. The new curriculum is being taught in all year groups but assessments in Year 2 and 6 are still being done against National Curriculum levels. All teachers have attended Wandsworth courses on assessment in English and Maths and these continue in the current year providing opportunities to liaise with colleagues from other schools, comparing and moderating work as we all become more confident assessing the New Curriculum objectives. We are in a transitional stage this year while we adapt to the expectations of, and changes in the content of the New Curriculum, and assessment is a key part of the school development plan. We have previously used Classroom Monitor to track formative assessment in Maths, English, and Science and this bank of information has been transferred to new stages which we are now using to track the New Curriculum objectives. This gives us an indication of where the children are within Stages (Stage 5 is for Year 5). It indicates whether a child is beginning, developing, secure, or exceeding within the stage. Some problems with this need further discussion within the school and with our Wandsworth colleagues. They use their super senses to search for superheroes hiding on the school grounds. There are occasions when we have to teach some aspects of the curriculum discretely. Religious Education, Maths, Physical Education, and elements of Literacy and ICT are taught outside of the imaginative learning projects to further develop children’s skills, knowledge, and understanding in these areas. As a Roman Catholic Primary School, we follow the ‘Come and See’ program for Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 and 2. It is based on the theological foundations of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Catechism, and the RE Curriculum Directory. The practice of spirituality is as important as learning about it in class, and the life and achievements of the children are celebrated in worship. The children come together every day for collective worship and each class leads collective worship each term. Additionally, Holy Communion is celebrated on several occasions in St Anne’s Church. We teach Phonics through the Sounds-Write program. We introduced Sounds-Write last year in reception and Key Stage 1. Already we have seen the impact that this program has had on developing reading and writing skills in your young learners. This year we are continuing to develop this program to support spelling and writing in Key Stage 2. Miss Shaub is our lead teacher for Phonics and spelling across the school. In total, we have trained 13 teachers and members of the support team to deliver the Sounds-Write program. Sounds-Write is a quality first phonics program and is acknowledged by the DfE as meeting all its criteria for an effective phonics teaching program - see Sounds-Write entry on the DfE site for details. It is an exciting and highly successful approach to the teaching of reading, spelling, and writing. The Sounds-Write highly-rated, intensive courses have now been attended by over ten thousand classroom practitioners, educational psychologists, and members of local authority support teams. The program is already being used extensively in primary and secondary schools throughout Britain, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, Australia, Zambia, and Papua New Guinea. Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling are systematically taught across the whole school and the children are given daily opportunities to learn the skills and apply them to their writing. In the foundation stage children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and work towards the Early Learning Goals. We ensure that children are self-confident have a positive attitude to learning and play cooperatively with other children and adults. In Key Stages 1 and 2 we follow the national curriculum. Half-termly topics give focus and create common themes that serve to inspire the children whilst ensuring that key skills and values are consistently applied throughout the year. We ensure the curriculum is challenging and enjoyable by matching teaching techniques and strategies to a range of learning styles. We use a range of support and intervention programs to ensure all children make progress and develop their full potential. At St Anne’s we are committed to ensuring that all children find opportunities to excel and develop their unique talents and gifts to the full. We facilitate this through a wide range of opportunities. Children at St Anne’s also have many opportunities to perform to an audience both within the school and within Wandsworth as actors, gymnasts, musicians, and dancers. We are a two-form entry Catholic primary school with a nursery and are located between The Oval and Vauxhall, just south of the Thames. Our school is centered on Christ and his teachings of love, peace, and justice, we aim to let the light of Christ shine through and from every child. All staff has the highest expectations of every child in every area – the children’s learning, their attitude, their behavior, and the presentation of themselves and their work. Our program mainly focuses on Christianity, however, we also study another world faith’s to promote tolerance and mutual respect. At St Anne’s we implement the National Curriculum through cross-curricular learning known as Topic Work. All topics – be it Outer Space in Reception through to Anglo Saxons in Year 6 – are taught across a variety of subjects to ensure that the learning is relevant, meaningful, and engaging for children.
