We are very proud of our school, which is a caring and happy environment. We are a larger than average Catholic Primary School that works closely with our Parish to support the children in their preparations for the Sacraments. At St John’s early reading is taught using synthetic phonics as the main approach to reading. They are taught to use their phonic skills and knowledge as the first approach to reading. Here at St John’s, we follow the Read Write Inc phonic program. All children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are taught in reading Write Inc groups daily. The program is continued in Key Stage 2 for those children who need it. A church school, we hold Christian values at the heart of everything we do. These are Friendship, trust, forgiveness, courage, creativity, peace, hope, and thankfulness. Teachers, governors, and parents all work together in partnership with one common aim: to do the best we can do for our children. We strive to create an environment where pupils are securely challenged, supported, and feel confident. Each child is valued equally and we believe that each child should be motivated to reach his or her potential, to take their place as a good citizen within the community. The Flintshire Healthy Schools scheme was launched in October 2000 and is a member of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools funded by Public Health Wales. The scheme aims to provide support for school improvement by establishing a healthy school climate in which the health and well-being of all members of the school community are valued and supported. St. John's joined the scheme in 2006 and we have achieved Phases one and two. We are not currently working towards Phase three. To ensure that the message and initiatives from the first two phases are still prevalent within the school we will be holding a Healthy Eating Fortnight after May Half Term. During this project, all classes will be focusing on the importance of eating healthily, exercising, and looking after our bodies. This term, Miss Thelwell will be hosting an after-school choir club taking place each Thursday from 3.15 - 4.15 pm (more information will follow shortly). Our "Kick It" club was so successful the last term, that the club will be returning to our school for 5 weeks from Tuesday 9th June (the application forms will be sent home the week before May half term). St. John the Baptist is one of eight schools within the Primary Advantage Federation which is overseen by Executive Head Sian Davies. Fiona Judge, our Executive Headteacher, and Lucy Blewett, our Head of School are supported by a strong Senior Leadership Team. The Senior Team acts as the point of contact for parents, children, and staff. We are a Church of England school and pride ourselves on our strong Christian ethos and strong links with St John’s Church Hoxton. Many of our children join St John the Baptist in the Nursery, aged three. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school, however. We encourage all our families with children in nursery to apply for a place in our Reception. Children meeting the local authority’s entry requirements move on to Reception. As we have two classes in Reception, we do have places for children who do not attend our nursery. The Hackney Learning Trust is responsible for setting the admission arrangements for all schools for which they are the Admission Authority – that is, community and voluntary controlled schools in the borough. For voluntary-aided schools, academies, foundation schools, or free schools each school governing body or Academy Trust is their admission authority. From time to time, we also have vacancies in other year groups. To apply for a place for one of our Years 1 to 6 classes, parents need to go to the Hackney Learning Trust to fill out a mid-term transfer form. We encourage visits to the school for prospective families. Our approach is underpinned by our strong Christian ethos. We aim to help children learn to love and forgive each other and aspire to be the best they can be, rejoicing in their success and the success of others. We also aim to establish a clear understanding of rights and responsibilities for all by embedding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The school has partnerships with a variety of organizations. We work closely with different groups to provide support for our pupils with their learning and out-of-school activities. We are committed to inclusion and believe that all children have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum that is accessible to them. Several children in the course of their school career will experience periods when they have difficulty in keeping up with their peers. Pupils develop at different rates, especially in primary education. At St John the Baptist we are committed to identifying and supporting any child in this position under the Special Educational Needs System. We developed a curriculum at St John the Baptist which ensures children have a broad range of knowledge, skills, and understanding. Above all, we try to ensure they enjoy their learning and make progress. Assessing how children progress against the requirements of the National Curriculum informs teacher planning. Our curriculum is designed to inspire and motivate pupils while providing for their academic, moral, physical, creative, personal, and social development. Children learn through a careful balance of specific teaching programs and a topic-based approach. From the Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 2 we recognize the importance of making links across the curriculum. Lessons are designed to ensure pupils acquire knowledge and skills and have opportunities to practice and apply their skills in a range of contexts. We encourage co-operative work, talk, discussion and above all, enjoyment as vehicles for learning in all subjects. Keeping ourselves safe on the internet is very important. One of the things which help us to stay safe all year round is our team of Digital Leaders. Our Digital Leaders are a fantastic asset to the school community. A Digital Leader is a pupil who is part of a Digital Leaders Team within a school. Their role is to support the use and further the development of ICT in schools. With technology advancing at such a fast rate, it is hard to keep up with change. Find out more about us in the Pupil Voice section. We do lots of activities at St John the Baptist to help us stay safe. For example, we have an annual online safety week. During online safety Week, we held a parent workshop where we discussed how to be safe on social media and how to be safe online.
