The School is located in leafy Grange Road, a short walk from the center of Cambridge and the College, at the heart of which sits the Chapel, home to the internationally renowned College Chapel Choir. The School site has undergone significant rebuilding or redevelopment in the last few years to ensure the facilities, layout, and fabric of the buildings fully support the delivery of the School’s ethos. The School occupies two sites, Byron House and Senior House, some 200 yards apart, across Grange Road from the extensive playing fields owned by and shared with St John’s College. Welcome to St John’s Catholic Primary School. We are located in a single-story building, with pleasant grounds and a secure ball cage for the children to use at playtimes. We also have a planting area which the children love to use in which in the past has been used to grow vegetables, fruit as well as flowers. We are also very lucky to be sited backing on to the Stave Hill Eco-Park, an area which we use as an additional resource for class-based activities. There are 7 classes, one for each year group, with a maximum of 30 places in each class. There is also a nursery class with part-time and full-time places. Nursery and Reception classes have their own separate, well-equipped outdoor play space. St John’s is a good school where the children’s behavior has been identified as being ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted (April 2016). Our curriculum too has been judged as ‘outstanding, where the range of trips, visitors, and activities are recognized as enriching the children’s learning experience. The teaching of phonics begins in the Nursery and continues throughout Reception and into Years 1 and 2 using two programs – ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Big Cat Phonics’ – which teach the letters in a specific sequence, and in growing complexity, with words taught alongside the sounds. Children may progress quickly through each phase or may need extra support as they move through each of the phases. Reading at St John’s is taught in two ways – individually or in Guided Reading sessions. Our reading scheme includes the Oxford Reading Tree series and children will take home a book appropriate to their reading level. It is expected that parents will read with their child every day. Now Press Play is an educational resource that uses sound, story, and movement, to immerse children in the world of their topic. Through a series of active and stimulating lessons, Now Press Play captures children’s interest and accelerates their learning. It brings the Curriculum to life and is an engaging start to a topic or a wonderful way to deepen learning. The children put on wireless headphones and are plunged into the world of their topic. St. John’s school received its fourth Eco School Green Flag Award in March 2016. The Green Flag itself flies proudly above the school and is a reflection of what we value as a school. We focus on each child acknowledging both rights and responsibilities. The spiritual life of our school is rooted in the worship and witness of our community. Our purpose is to sustain and develop a sense of purpose in our children which means helping them to understand they are called to be the best person they can be. We aim to provide full-time nursery places for children who are aged three from September 1st to August 31st of the previous academic year. Children cannot be admitted into our nursery until they are aged three. We aim to have all our children admitted to the nursery by the end of September. Parents and Carers should contact the school office if they wish to place their child’s name on our nursery waiting list. Admission to the nursery is based on age. Putting your child’s name on the waiting list earlier does not mean they will get into the nursery earlier. Children’s names need to be on the nursery waiting list by the end of the Easter holidays, the term before they are due to start in the nursery. Parents and carers will be notified of a place before the May half-term holiday. Once accepted for our nursery a homeschool transition program will be organized for your child. This is run by the nursery team. Manchester local authority is responsible for admission of all reception places, including children who are already in our nursery. The local authority form must be completed by parents online by the nominated date in the year before your child is due to start reception. A late application could result in your child not getting a place at the school of their choice. Parents who have a nursery place at St John’s do not automatically get a place in reception at that school. Contact should be made with the school office. Details will be taken and the parents/carers will be advised if there are any vacancies in that year group. If there are vacancies an appointment will be made for the parents/carers and child to come to visit our school. The office will advise the parents/carers of documentation that will be needed and admission forms will be completed. Children are then admitted to the school by a mutually agreeable date. In cases where we do not have vacancies, we will refer the family to the local authority. The Department of Education has recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 ‘Prevent Strategy’, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. At the heart of St John’s College is the Cathedral Choral Foundation. As the choir school to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral, St John’s College provides the boy and girl choristers (ages 8-18) for weekly services, two annual concerts at St David’s Hall, and numerous performance opportunities. Over the years the Cathedral Choir has appeared in a major Hollywood film, performed with the world-renowned consort The Tallis Scholars, and sung at Nôtre Dame, Paris. In addition, the choir has also given performances in Madrid, El Escorial, the cathedrals of Bruges and Ghent, St David’s Hall, Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, Westminster Abbey, and St Paul’s Cathedral. St John’s College, Cardiff is used to the celestial choir school to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral. However, this year it was not just the school’s music that was out of this world. Anyone obtaining a C grade on A-level results day in August will have felt a little lonely, as 98.1% of all outcomes secured A*, A, or B grades, putting Eton, Westminster, St Paul’s et al into the shade. It is a remarkable achievement for the 525-pupil Catholic day school, in Old St Mellons."
