St Helen’s Catholic Primary is part of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy Trust, which the school helped to establish in 2015, and is situated in the London Borough of Newham and the Parish of St Margaret’s. Where we are making us very conscious of the diversity of backgrounds that our children come from. What we are making us work hard to provide the best possible all-around education for each one of the children in our care. In recent years we have been putting much effort into improving our physical environment. The original building of the school, founded in 1908, was destroyed in the heavy bombing of London during the Second World War. Rebuilt by Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in 1951, the school was by the beginning of the 21st century in need of major attention, suffering as it was from subsidence and complex building issues. The decision was taken to start from scratch and our new, award-winning building was officially opened in July 2010 by Bishop Thomas of the Diocese of Brentwood, members of our multi-academy trust. If your child has any difficulties in accessing the curriculum, we will work with you as a parent or carer to identify these difficulties and then find ways of providing appropriate support in line with the National Special Needs Code of Practice. We recognize and value other languages and encourage our children to learn their heritage language, whilst we support them in learning English through our visual, and practical curriculum. Our school is fully accessible for disabled pupils, with a lift, disabled toilets, a shower room and all facilities required by law. St. Edward's is a Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School, which has served the Parish of Our Lady of Compassion, Upton Park since 1902. Initially, the school was located in Castle Street and suffered major damage during World War 2, which resulted in the school being rebuilt in 1949. The school was again relocated in September 2000 to the present site in Green Street, as part of West Ham United Football Club's Redevelopment Programme. St. Edward's Nursery opened in April 2001. Children between the ages of 3 to 11 years now attend this new two-form entry school. We are a two-form entry Voluntary Aided Catholic school for children aged 3 to 11, situated on Green Street in the diverse community of East London. St Edward’s was also designated as a National Teaching School in March 2013. All staff is dedicated to the welfare and education of those who attend St Edward’s. The staff work closely as a team and are well supported by the Governing Body. All staff work to support the Schools ‘Vision & Values’, which are integrated into the ethos of the school. This year, so far, children have recently celebrated the longest-reigning monarch in British History Queen Elizabeth II and we will continue to celebrate events and projects such as the Rugby World Cup where the ideal that sport is bringing together all nations with a common ethos and values. Our International Schools Award reflects the high profile of our appreciation of different languages and cultures. We are committed to the teaching of MFL, including the teaching of both Spanish (& in previous years Mandarin) across our schools. Some children and staff undertook the role of ambassadors for our school, city, and country by attending and presenting workshops at the International Headteachers Conference in Asia. In addition, October 2015 sees our European dimension being continued with staff training in Santander as part of Continuing Professional Development enabling them to share educational philosophies, strategies including the teaching of Core Values with our European colleagues. Daily, our schools undertake daily assemblies that uphold traditional values of empathy, respect, and tolerance which are reflected within the displays within our learning environments. We provide a Catholic curriculum, which is broad and balanced, recognizing that every pupil is unique and is created in the image of God. Our curriculum is designed to enable every pupil to discern their vocation and to be well-equipped to follow it as active citizens in service to the world. Catholic Religious Education is the “core of the core curriculum” (Pope St John Paul II) and the foundation of the entire educational process. We also provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities and strong pastoral support. We incorporate democratic principles, value the rule of law, support individual liberty and foster a community in which different faiths and beliefs are respected. No one likes to receive criticism but an open organization will always be willing to listen to concerns and anxieties and be ready to learn from them if appropriate. In a school, most concerns are likely to be expressed by parents of its pupils, though some may come from pupils themselves, parishioners, or other interested parties such as neighbors or users of the premises. Nearly all concerns or questions can be resolved very quickly and informally if parents feel able to voice them as soon as they arise. The more information the School gives to the parents the less scope there is for misunderstanding. As part of this information, parents could be told that feedback is always welcome and that, therefore, they are warmly encouraged to voice any concerns straightaway, preferably to the person concerned. In most cases, discussion, explanation, further information – or an apology if appropriate – will resolve the issue. Every effort should be made to allay concerns at this level and with the least possible formality. The ideal is that no concern should ever become a formal complaint. The Diocese of Westminster owns the land and the Governing Body are trustees and have a duty to look after the school buildings and site on behalf of the Bishop. Parents and carers are asked for contributions towards the cost of maintaining and improving the school buildings and grounds. St. Clare’s, Oxford was founded by Anne Dreydel OBE and Pamela Morris in 1953 and grew out of a scheme to establish links between British and European students after the Second World War. The original name was The Oxford English Centre for Foreign Students, which later became St. Clare’s Hall, and then St. Clare’s, Oxford. The College grew quickly to encompass a wide range of nationalities and programs, both at university and pre-university level and in the English Language. In the mid-50s, students came mostly from around a dozen Western European countries, as well as the UK. Nowadays there are 50 nationalities represented on the IB program alone. As well as longer courses of study, shorter summer courses also became a central feature of the College in the early days. Links with universities in the USA date back to the 1960s and formal agreements by which American university students could gain credit towards their US degrees by studying abroad at St. Clare’s started up in the 1970s, and gradually replaced the University of London external degrees that had previously been taught. In 1977 the College introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma for pre-university students, only the 41st school in the world to do so. There are only 13 other institutions in the world that have taught the IB longer than us. A-Levels were gradually phased out as the IB became established and we are now the longest established IB World School in England.
