Touted continuously as an education "best buy," SD Mines offers 19 science and engineering majors and 18 minors. Our Admissions Counselors are available to answer all your questions and help you with the admissions process. Through STEM academics, hands-on learning, personal attention, and paid internships, we provide exceptional engineering and science education at a price family can afford.

We give students the personal attention needed to succeed. The average class size is 23 students. And, we do not let graduate students teach professors to teach. This focus on excellence in face-to-face undergraduate education is increasingly rare in American universities and is one of the things that makes Mines different.

Our internship program is a hallmark of the Mines experience, with 77% of students earning at least one paid internship before graduating, giving their career a competitive edge. Last summer alone, students earned internships with over 250 different employers like Microsoft, NASA, Ford, 3M, and ExxonMobil in 44 states at about $18 an hour - or participated in paid research positions before graduation, like the world's flagship neutrino project, a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

We are happy you are interested in applying to the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. In any given year, international students make up approximately 5% of the student population. We also have faculty members from all over the world. The School of Mines community includes people of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints who collaborate to advance science and engineering.

Many college students find it necessary to supplement their personal and family financial resources to attend college. The Financial Aid Office will make every effort to develop a financial aid package (some combination of loan, work, grant, and scholarship) to help capable, qualified, and needy students. However, the student should still be prepared to pay for a portion of his or her college costs, and parents of dependent students are expected to assist with the student's cost of education to the extent to which they are able.

While all undergraduate students at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology major in one of 16 engineering and science disciplines, they must also take courses in our core curriculum so that they write and communicate effectively and understand the human experience and the world around them through the study of the arts, humanities and social sciences.

There are no comfortable degrees at Mines. But if you are admitted and are willing to work hard, the exceptional faculty at Mines are willing to help you succeed.

Our campus boasts a vibrant patchwork of concerts and intramurals, lectures and plays, student clubs and impromptu volleyball games, and cheering fans packing the stands on game day.
