The Saint-Petersburg State Technological Institute (Technical University) was founded on November 28, 1828. D.I. Mendeleev, F. Beilstein, and other well-known scientists worked here. Many scientific schools, known all over the world, were developed in the Technological Institute. Today, the SPSTI presents new cutting-edge materials for modern branches of science and technologies in the following fields: Fuel Industry, Materials Science, Functional Materials, Information Technology, Medicine, Healthcare, Environment, Optoelectronic, and Nanomaterials. The main building of SPSTI is situated in the historic center of the city.

Being one of the oldest and leading Russian technology universities, the SPSTI has a long international cooperation history. From the very first years of existence, the Institute invited outstanding foreign scientists. Many of them continued their research work within the Institute and founded large scientific schools, made significant discoveries. The Institute maintains a partnership with colleagues from Germany, France, Finland, Algeria, China, Japan, etc. Extensive work within the terms of over 30 agreements on cooperation with foreign institutes and companies is being conducted. There are the following directions of international cooperation:

SPI provides students a wide range of facilities. SPSTI's foundation library opened its doors on October 11, 1831. At present, the library contains over 1 million books, including rare editions. There is four reading room for scientific work, where over 330 people can work simultaneously. Internet room provides free access to the global information network, allowing users to refer to electronic libraries and databases. There are six comfortable dormitories for students. The museum represents the main documentary steps in the Institute's history in chronological order from craftsmen school till Institute of Technology illustrated with authentic historical documents, photographs, medals, rare scientific publications, instruments, old pieces of furniture, which reproduce on the exclusive aura of the 19-the century. One of Russia's most prestigious universities in chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology, engineering, information technology, management, and economics. Russia's leading university is a modern training center for higher education.

The Academic Board of the Institute makes decisions on all the issues regarding education and research work and actual financial and administrative work and international relations issues. Every year, it receives the rector's report on its work, approves the structure of the Institute, deals with issues regarding the foundation, renaming and abolition of faculties, departments, laboratories, and other educational and scientific units, sets the date and approves the procedure of holding elections of the rector of the Institute, the selection of candidates and their requirements, sets the procedure of election and elects deans of faculties, directors, and chairpersons of the corresponding departments, conducts a competitive selection of candidates to conclude labor contracts with professors of the departments, carries out expertise connected with the awarding of academic titles of Professor and Associate Professor by the established procedure, proposes professors and members of the staff for government awards and honorary titles for their distinguished contributions in training specialists, as well as for outstanding scientific achievements.
