The history of the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) can be traced back to 2003 when visionary Omanis contemplated establishing a high-quality university of technology in Oman, the first University with German collaboration in this region.

In 2007, GUtech was established in affiliation with RWTH Aachen University in Germany, one of the world's leading technical universities and member of the elite IDEA league, a strategic partnership of five of Europe's leading research universities, including Imperial College London, Delft University of Technology, ETH Zurich and the Paris Institute of Technology.

GUtech is locally accredited by the Omani Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and by the Oman Academic Accreditation Agency (OAAA) and has achieved overseas accreditation by the German Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute (ACQUIN), a member agency of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.

The University's Board of Governors' 12 members include external representations from the RWTH Aachen University, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Embassy in Muscat, and the Omani Ministry of Higher Education, thus assuring high standards in delivering quality education.

As a young and innovative university with a student body of just under 2000, the University can deliver an education that incorporates theory and practice in an individualized setting. GUtech students not only learn the theory; they apply and extend what they learn in the classroom in hands-on projects with real-life application, exemplifying the Humboldt ideal of holistic education.

Rooted in Omani tradition and driven by German quality standards, GUtech has an inherently international outlook. Our students, faculty, and staff hail from about 40 different countries across the globe, and at least as many different mother tongues can be heard on campus. Students are encouraged to take advantage of our international exchange agreements to gain international experience, primarily through our DAAD funded programs at RWTH Aachen University, including short stays for summer schools, or faculty-led excursions, or long-term stays to write the Bachelor thesis in Aachen or enroll in a consecutive Master's program there.

    The Campus

    • The GUtech campus is spread over about 100 acres, currently housing the University's main building (40,500 sqm.), three accommodation buildings (11,800 sqm), a teaching and research EcoHouse, a new museum, and exhibition hall, and a classroom building scheduled to open in 2018.
    • Student enrollment in winter semester 2017/2018 stands a little under 2000 with an 80% female population.
    • New 400 bed accommodation is scheduled to open for winter semester 2018/19 and the current 250-bed student accommodation.
    • GUtech staff is comprised of 75 faculty and 108 administrative staff.
    • On-campus facilities include sports amenities, in-house, franchise food options, and a library with access to RWTH Aachen University's digital catalog.
    • The main building on Oman's first-ever Green Campus was awarded the Design Award 2016 of the German Design Council in the category Excellent Communications Design – Architecture. The museum recently received the architecture award for the best commercial project in Oman 2018.

GUtech provides students with the education required to become highly qualified and socially responsible graduates, guided by German excellence in science and technology with a firm grounding in Oman's culture and heritage. The University fosters creative and critical thinking to advance research and development and aims to serve society as a whole.

GUtech is committed to ethical principles in all of its undertakings. In particular, the University welcomes students and employees from both genders, all ethnic, geographical, cultural, and religious backgrounds. The University encourages association in peace and with tolerance and welcomes other intercultural exchange between Oman and Germany.

The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) strives to become a leading university of technology in Oman and the wider region, thus defining the highest education, research, and innovation standards.
