        Alagappa University

        Alagappa University is located at Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu is accessible from Madurai (Code: IMX) and Tiruchirappalli (Code: TRZ) airports within two hours. The 440-acre green and lush campus houses all the academic activities. This University has emerged from the galaxy of institutions initially founded by the great philanthropist and educationist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar during the 1950s. Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 to foster research, development, and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. Aligarh Muslim University The University grew out of the work of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the great Muslim reformer and statesman, who, in the aftermath of the Indian War of Independence of 1857 felt that it was important for Muslims to gain Education and become involved in the public life and government services in India. Raja Jai Kishan helped Sir Syed in establishing the University The British decision to replace the use of Persian in 1842 for government employment and the language of Courts of Law caused deep anxiety among Muslims of the sub-continent. Sir Syed saw a need for Muslims to acquire proficiency in the English language and Western sciences if the community were to maintain its social and political clout, particularly in Northern India. He began to prepare the foundation for the formation of a Muslim University by starting schools at Moradabad (1858) and Ghazipur (1863). His purpose for the establishment of the Scientific Society in 1864, in Aligarh, was to translate Western works into Indian languages as a prelude to prepare the community to accept Western Education and to inculcate scientific temperament among the Muslims. The intense desire to enhance the social conditions of Indian Muslims led Sir Syed to publish the periodical, 'Tehzibul Akhlaq' in 1870. The Library's foundation was laid in 1877 at the time of the establishment of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College by Lord Lytton, the then Viceroy of India, and it was named after him as Lytton Library. The present grand seven-storied building was inaugurated by Late Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India in 1960. The Library was renamed as Maulana Azad Library, after a great scholar, educationist, statesman, freedom fighter and the first Education Minister of independent India. M.A. Library is the Central Library of the University with more than 110 sister libraries (college/departmental libraries). It is a World famous repository of rare manuscripts and books in Urdu, Persian and Arabic languages. Akal university great scholars will spread the divine message of Sri Guru Granth Sahib among the people in the world in their respective languages resulting in universal peace and brotherhood: Three centuries ago, the tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, stayed at Talwandi Sabo, finalized the compilation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and prophesied that this place would manifest as Guru Ki Kashi-a great Centre of teaching and learning from where will emerge great scholars of Sikhism. About two centuries after that, the establishment of Gurmat Vidyalaya by Sant Atar Singh Ji Maharaj was the first step in this direction. Nearly a century after that, the establishment of Akal University, Talwandi Sabo under the leadership of Baba Iqbal Singh Ji Baru Sahib Wale, was the culmination of what the tenth Guru prophesied about three centuries ago. The University has started its Third academic session this year. The mission and vision of the University are not merely to impart literacy but also to provide high-quality spiritual value-based education leading to the holistic development of complete human beings who will propagate the message of Universal brotherhood and philosophy of interfaith wisdom enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Library The library at Akal University has a well-stocked Library & Learning Centre with silent study spaces, video viewing facilities, newspapers, magazines and periodicals, and computers (all with Internet access and USB Ports and print facilities). The Central Library caters to the institutes' faculty, students, staff, research institutions & industries' information needs. Priority is given to keeping library collections up-to-date, emphasizing primary texts for undergraduates, and taught postgraduate courses. Space and Sitting Capacity of the Hall: The whole library is divided into four sections, i.e. (a) Stack area, (b) Circulation section, (c) Reference and Periodical section, and (d) Reading room and ICT Lab. The library has two separate reading rooms for boys and girls. Total sitting capacity is 80 at a time, including ICT Lab and reference section in the library. Books: Total 7850 books available in the library Journals: 42 print journals and 19 print magazines were subscribed in 2017. Hostels Akal University provides separate hostel facilities to both girls and boys. These fully furnished hostels provide a safe and homely environment for the students. Mission & Vision “To establish permanent peace in the world through value-based scientific education and spiritual rejuvenation, creating good global citizens.” The University plans to start the great work of translation of the holy scripture in different languages of the world so that the seekers of spirituality from all over the world may submerge themselves in the ocean of divinity and parmarth and find the path of ultimate salvation enshrined in the holy scripture of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as blessed by the 10th Guru Sri Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Library The library at Akal University has a well-stocked Library & Learning Centre with silent study spaces, video viewing facilities, newspapers, magazines and periodicals, and computers (all with Internet access and USB Ports and print facilities). The Central Library caters to the institutes' faculty, students, staff, research institutions & industries' information needs. Priority is given to keeping library collections up-to-date, emphasizing primary texts for undergraduates, and taught postgraduate courses. Space and Sitting Capacity of the Hall: The whole library is divided into four sections, i.e. (a) Stack area, (b) Circulation section, (c) Reference and Periodical section, and (d) Reading room and ICT Lab. The library has two separate reading rooms for boys and girls. Total sitting capacity is 80 at a time, including ICT Lab and reference section in the library. Books: Total 7850 books available in the library Journals: 42 print journals and 19 print magazines were subscribed in 2017. Hostels Akal University provides separate hostel facilities to both girls and boys. These fully furnished hostels provide a safe and homely environment for the students. It is made sure that the hostels remain free from drug abuse. The students staying in the hostels are served nutritious vegetarian food at nominal charges.
