- The University of Sarajevo is a sizeable and complex organization carrying out the noble mission of educating able, creative, and internationally competent personnel in all areas of interest for Bosnia and Herzegovina through teaching and research. The personnel is expected to address the modern economy's challenges in European and global political, economic, social, and cultural context. The University is committed to remaining an autonomous academic community of teachers, researchers, artists, and students incorporated into the international University and academic community and trends. The University continually invests efforts in strengthening its role as a responsible institution within its social community, and to ensure the role of the recognizable center for scientific and artistic work, bringing together teams of domestic and international experts and artists around projects relevant to the domestic, regional, and broader social context and environment. The organization and activities of the University of Sarajevo, as a public higher education institution in the Sarajevo Canton, are prescribed by the Framework Law on BH Higher Education, the Law on Higher Education in the Sarajevo Canton, and the University's Statute. The University of Sarajevo's member institutions is twenty-five Faculties, three Academies, and five research Institutes with the status of full members, internally organized within six Science/Arts Groups from the fields of: Social sciences Humanities Medical sciences Natural, mathematical, and bio-technical sciences Technical sciences Arts. Sarajevo was first placed on the map of academic centers in this part of Europe in 1573, with the signing of the Waqfname (Book of Endowment) by Gazi Husrev-bey. Today, Gazi Husrev-bey's Library is, as an associate member, the oldest institution within the University of Sarajevo. Following the departure of the Ottoman administration and Austria-Hungary's arrival, the Sharia Judicial Academy was founded in 1887, the National Museum in 1888, the Catholic Seminary of the Vrhbosna Archbishopric in 1890. The Eastern Orthodox Seminary of Sarajevo was upgraded to an institution of higher learning in 1892. Today, the National Museum is an associate member of the University of Sarajevo, and the Faculty of Catholic Theology is a full member. The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry was founded in 1940, and the Faculty of Medicine in 1944. The Teacher Training College and the Institute of Biology were established in Sarajevo after World War II, in the then Federative People's Republic of Yugoslavia. Following the Faculties of Medicine, Law, and Agriculture and Forestry and the subsequent establishment of the Technical Faculty, in 1949, the Assembly of the People's Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Law on the University, which formally established the University of Sarajevo. The Faculty of Philosophy (with a science department) and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became its members in 1950. Decades that followed saw a period of intense growth. Until 1975, the University of Sarajevo was the only University in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the beacon of development of higher education and science. It also contributed significantly to establishing the University of Banja Luka in 1975, the University of Tuzla in 1976, and the University of Mostar in 1977. The international recognition of Bosnia and Herzegovina brought a new period. The University entered it as an association of 19 faculties, four academies, four higher learning schools in Sarajevo, and two faculties in Zenica. During the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sarajevo's siege (5 April 1992 – 29 February 1996), the University suffered enormous casualties and material losses – staff suffered and was displaced, faculty members left, buildings and equipment were destroyed or badly damaged. The University continued to work and fought to preserve civilized standards in the most challenging conditions encountered by any higher education in Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The international academic community noted these efforts with admiration. In 1996, along with other universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the University of Sarajevo joined the European higher education reform support programs. This period was also marked by intense work on repairing the wartime damages and creating an environment suited for stable and continuous development. The University of Sarajevo invested all its efforts to re-enter the contemporary European and international academic trends fully. During the period 1997–2000, the University of Sarajevo coordinated the first European-level TEMPUS project to introduce the 3+2 model. Understanding the importance of establishing itself within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), in the academic year 2005/2006, notwithstanding the lack of any state-level guidance and the absence of any political, legal, or material support, the University of Sarajevo entered the complex process of reform in compliance with the Bologna principles. The University has developed or participated in several international third-cycle programs of study based on the EHEA-ERA standards. In terms of organization, the University of Sarajevo today is a large and complex public institution, comprising 30 organizational units: 22 faculties, three academies, and five research institutes, in six areas of academic work: social science, humanities, medicine, technical studies, science, biotechnology, and art. Associate members of the University include the National and University Library of BiH, Gazi Husrev-bey's Library, the National Museum, and other units. In May 2013, according to the Framework Law on Higher Education in BiH and the Law on Higher Education in the Sarajevo Canton, the Senate of the University of Sarajevo adopted a new Statute. It thus took a bold step forward, moving from a loose association of faculties towards a university organized in a way shaped by relevant European traditions. Currently, most of the facilities of full and associate members of the University are dispersed across the city of Sarajevo. The University Campus, located at the former Tito Barracks, currently houses five faculties and two institutes, and additional student-focused facilities. Zoning permits and designs have been prepared for part of the buildings included in the first part of the Campus Master Plan. The Master Plan was awarded the 2004 Campus Planning Award in Boston, USA. View full university

- The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology was opened in October 2004 in Sarajevo as the first private University in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dedicated to providing high quality, internationally competitive education and up-to-date programs, SSST established collaboration with the University of Buckingham (United Kingdom). Today, the only private University in BiH offers its graduates a dual degree. Further, this collaboration makes SSST subject to meeting national and the University of Buckingham's and UK's academic guidelines and standards of teaching. Through this collaboration, SSST is the only University in the region of South-Eastern Europe monitored by the UK's Quality Assurance Agency, ensuring transparency and the highest standards in teaching and examinations procedures. To fulfill its mandate for excellence, SSST has put together an internationally educated and ambitious faculty, many of whom come to us from the world's leading universities. The faculty is actively engaged in research projects within their fields, remaining at the forefront of their profession's advances in research and innovative teaching methodology. At SSST, we believe that a good degree, in any field, must also include a fluent knowledge of at least one foreign language. The University, just like most of the world today, has embraced English as a medium of communication with a full English language curriculum, but also provides additional courses in both English and German, mandatory for all students regardless of their academic field of study. As a result, the quality of writing, speaking, and presentation skills in English that students gain here is exceptionally high. German is a significant addition, given the importance of this language in politics, business, science, and technology. Students are taught in smaller groups and are given materials specific to their future professions. All courses involve the use of contemporary e-learning technologies and web resources. Our University employs one professor for every four students – the highest ratio in the region and broader – while our academic advising system ensures that professors and teaching assistants are available for daily consultations and are charged with individual monitoring of each student's academic progress. The SSST curriculum taught entirely in the English language seeks to transfer technical skills and academic knowledge and build confident and globally-minded graduates prepared for the challenging international environment. In addition to their main field of study (primary), all SSST students also choose a minor, allowing specialization within their fields and significantly increasing their competitive edge following graduation. SSST offers four-year academic programs for all undergraduate studies (240 ETCS credits European Credit Transfer System), except Sarajevo Medical School with a six-year academic program (twelve semesters) and Sarajevo Film Academy, which offers a Bologna certified three-year academic course (BA Degree Programme). By opening its doors, Sarajevo School of Science and Technology starts a new era in higher education. It opens a new bridge between Europe and the world – the future is here. What is now the buildings, classrooms, computer laboratories, and offices of the University Sarajevo School of Science and Technology began as a vision of the future where young people are given both the tools and the opportunities to affect change in our society and form a new critical mass of capable and educated future decision-makers. With my many years as senior faculty and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, and the University of Sarajevo, as well as through my work as part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency, I have become convinced that the only real long-term contribution that can be made to this country's and this region's future is the one made towards its youth. Young people are our most generous and as yet untapped resources. We came together to re-energize this resource by offering the highest formal education, distinguished by innovation and modernity. That is how the story of SSST began. View full university

IUS aims to become the central hub in Balkans for bridging the East to the West as a leading international institution of higher education and research center with comprehensive excellence and quality whose students are lifelong learners, inter-culturally competent well-developed leaders in the socio-economic development of societies. The mission of IUS is to produce science, art, and technology and present it to the benefit of humanity to educate free-thinking, participating, sharing, open-minded individuals who are open to change and improvement and who can transform knowledge into values of importance for themselves and the community. International University of Sarajevo (IUS), with its identity as an international institution of education and research, collaborates with universities in the region and other countries to provide a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere of learning for students from vast geography. International University of Sarajevo (IUS) was established in the year 2003 and is one of the largest educational projects in the Balkan region. At the very beginning, as a relatively young academic institution, IUS created an open, tolerant and international environment for its students, where young people have the opportunity to acquire new and exchange the existing knowledge and experiences with their fellow students and professors, but also with renewed guest speakers. In the past 12 years, higher education institutions offer good education to local and international students for all three study cycles. The University has developed intensively throughout the years and is among the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who adopted the European teaching standards. During undergraduate and postgraduate studies, students are developing in a quality intellectual atmosphere. They can choose one of the 21 programs of studies within the five faculties, containing programs in different areas ranging from industrial engineering and computer sciences through art and social sciences, pedagogical sciences, law, and business administration and humanities. At the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), we have up to 2000 students studying in all three cycles of studies, coming from all continents and 47 countries. An opportunity for those who studied and graduated at IUS, in a creative environment for the intellectual development of young people, IUS enabled them to easily use those talents in the world of successful and trusted professionals and responsible citizens of B&H society, but also for those who come from different countries of the world. In addition to maintaining a high level of education of professionals of different profiles, IUS primarily focuses on affirmation of their work and achievements, involvement in the international university community, and long term cooperation with related universities achieved through various projects and programs. In doing so, IUS was trying to attract and retain outstanding, qualified teachers and administrative staff that provide substantial contributions in their operations and participate in innovative research projects to continue improving service delivery to students and the community. When founded, IUS had 14 employees and 68 students. The University currently employs more than 200 full-time academic and administrative staff from more than 15 countries. The investment, and all the previous work and effort invested in the idea of IUS, were realized through an open, spacious, and meaningful campus, construction of facilities and contemporary university buildings, library, two comfortable student dormitories, a modern research center, as well as continues development of IUS capacities, including job opportunities and development of B&H society. The International University of Sarajevo, with its Ilıdza campus situated in Sarajevo – a city that has well preserved the historical identity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country that is itself a bridge between the East and the West, is an international higher education institution, embracing students from 50 different countries, including those from the Balkans and Turkey. IUS, whose departments have entirely been recognized by YÖK (Higher Education Council of Turkey), was founded as the first international University, the first foundation university of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is now celebrating its 12th birthday. IUS, with its approximately 2000 students, growing and colorful academia, is a small but competent European University with its engaging national and international academic and social activities. At our vast campus in green Ilıdza, we present continuous education opportunities with our undergraduate and graduate programs and the programs designed within the lifelong learning ideal "IUSLife." With its moderate fees, generous scholarships, and approach that rewards success, IUS is the region's shining star. View full university
