    University of Piraeus

    The University of Piraeus was founded as a "School of Industrial Studies" in 1938 by the Association of Industrialists and Craftsmen, following the Law N.5197/1931 and the A.N. 28/1936, in association with the Federation of Public Limited Companies Greece intending to provide economic, legal and technical education to industrial executives. In 1945 it was renamed to "Higher School of Industrial Studies," and its purpose was that of administrators' systematic theoretical and practical training. In 1949, the organization was complete (law 1245/49). In 1958, it was renamed to Graduate School of Industrial Studies of Piraeus. From then on, courses last four years, and degrees awarded are equal to those of other universities. Since 1966, the School operates as a public entity. From the academic year 1971-1972, studying at the School provided two paths to select from the second year: Economic Science and Business Administration. The Department of Statistics and Insurance Science was founded during the academic year 1977-1978. With law 1268/82, the University initially operated with one Department. In 1984 (law 43/1984), the School was organized to include three departments: Economic Science, Business Administration, and Statistics and Insurance Science. In June 1989, law 377/89 prescribed the renaming of the School to "The University of Piraeus" and the creation of three more academic departments, Banking and Financial Management. Maritime Studies, Technology and Production Systems In the academic year 1990-1991, two of the three departments started to operate the Department of Banking and Financial Management and the Department of Maritime Studies. The Department of Technology and Production Systems was launched in the academic year 1991-1992 and was later (2002) renamed to "Department of Industrial Management and Technology" according to law 113/30-4-2002/ Government Gazette: 95. The Department of Informatics began operating in the academic year 1992-1993. The Department of Technological Education was launched in 1999-2000 and was renamed in 2002 to "Department of Computer Education and Digital Systems" and in 2009 to "Department of Digital Systems." The Department of International and European Studies was launched in the academic year 2000-2001. The University of Piraeus has established a robust international presence throughout the years. The Employment and Career Structure (DASTA), University of Piraeus, is an innovative structure that aims to upgrade the initial vocational training and vocational education systems and link higher education with the labor market. The Quality Assurance Unit (MO.DI.P.), University of Piraeus, is the central coordinating body of all the quality assurance and evaluation of Credit and the Foundation. The University of Piraeus, with a strong presence and reputation in the wider international scientific and academic, has throughout its long journey of meaningful work with remarkable results in the field of international relations and partnerships with academic institutions abroad. Specifically, in this context, the Department has the responsibility of co accents and management of scientific cooperation agreements concluded by the University equivalent universities or equivalent higher institutions of Europe, the Balkans and Black Sea countries, Russia, the United States ., Canada, Australia, Middle, and the Far East. The agreements relate to many disciplines, benefiting the scientific staff, students, and institutions. The Department also undertakes all necessary steps each year to the University of Piraeus to participate in international meetings (International Association of Universities, European Association of Universities, etc.) to inform and contribute to its presence in the decisions and actions relating to education and higher education in general. The presence of the University of Piraeus in international affairs, strengthened by active participation in 5 international associations and organizations.
  2. Piraeus University of Applied Sciences (Technological Education Institute of Piraeus) is an independent and self-governed Institute of higher education. The Institute's operation is based on the Greek laws 4009/2011, 4076/2012, 3549/2007, 2916/2001. The degrees offered are recognized by the Greek state and EU and are thoroughly evaluated. The studies in the Departments of Piraeus University of Applied Sciences (Technological Education Institute of Piraeus) for the first level degrees are lasting four years typically. They are equivalent to 240 ECTS, according to the Bologna Process Guidelines. After graduation, the new scientists may continue their studies in the second level (MSc) programs that the last one to two years weighted 90-120 ECTS. A third level course is then possible for Ph.D. studies in collaboration with several Universities in Greece or the European region. The campus is extended on about 100.000 m2 in the middle of an olive grove, which includes some of the very same olive trees that used to shade Plato's Academy. The academic operation is supported by 160 permanent members of the administration staff. These operations are also supported by approximately 30 additional persons engaged in several R & D programs. There are approximately 25 Laboratories in Engineering Scholl and 10 Laboratories in the School of Business and Economics that support the teaching and research and development activities. They are engaged in several research and development programs funded by the Greek Government and the European Union.
