      1. Maebashi Institute of Technology (Establisher: Maebashi City) is one of Japan's few Public Engineering Universities. By promoting intellectual infrastructure to establish a sustainable and recycling society for a human to co-exist in harmony with nature, we strive to realize cultural and healthy civic life and advance technologies to contribute to the local community, society, and welfare. Based on the fact that engineering technology is closely related to civic life, we pursue education and research to solve the various issues human beings are confronted within the 21st century, such as social safety and security, energy, and environment, and to contribute to the local community, the society, and the welfare. By intellectual fusion and integration, we endeavor to nurture creative engineers with a rich sense of humanity, promote research to enrich human life, and create a vibrant community as an intellectual creation center. To cope with the rapid advancement and diversification of today's science and technology, understanding the expertise areas and the surrounding areas are necessary. Therefore, we make students possible to take specialized courses offered in other departments. The credits earned at other departments are limited to a maximum of 20. In Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Systems life Engineering, and Biotechnology, project study programs are introduced to deepen students' technical knowledge and skill. Through such project studies, students will understand the details of the research carried in laboratories. They are also expected to possess the necessary abilities to explore research problems in their future careers. Department of Integrated Design Engineering offers courses primarily at night for local working people's continuing education to train them as practicing engineers. Master's degree program and doctoral degree program were established in April 2001 and April 2003 within the Graduate School of Engineering to cultivate highly specialized technical personnel and excellent researchers. As part of this effort, students are permitted to take courses in two other public universities, and the earned course credits from there are accepted as credits for graduation. We have made cooperation agreements with Gunma University and the Maebashi chamber of commerce and industry, aiming to promote science and technology and further develop the local culture. Specifically, the cooperation in medical care, health, welfare, environment, interchange of constituent members, education for local culture development, and academic exchange are being progressed. We have cooperated with Gunma University in information exchange about student exchange, mutual recognition of course credits, education, academic research, etc. We also work on the globalization of our university by promoting international exchange with overseas universities and institutes. Now we have made international exchange agreements with several foreign universities, and the student exchange with Beijing University of Technology has been carried out for many years.
      2. Our institution, Shoken Gakuen, has to motto the four virtues of sober earnestness, piety, sincerity, and kindness, coupled with Confucian Jen or humanity. We aim to develop character education from the Confucian central virtues of humaneness, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness. With this Jen, we get the total of all virtues as the founding philosophy. From the turn of the century through the Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and Heisei era, a significant change has been required of welfare education in line with developments in politics and the economy. The university is positive in offering intellectual and human resources to local communities, and in turn, in engaging with special lecturers and experts in their respective fields to conduct educational exchanges with the community. The university also offers a lifelong education as an open school for learning, free from the formalized sense of values. The university systematizes welfare, education, and health scientifically and theoretically while organizing a welfare and health center for research and counseling for people of all ages to be on visiting terms with the university. The university is also eager to cultivate a sense of international awareness through international exchanges with China and other Asian countries, Europe and America. The university's founding philosophy is based on Jen or humanity, the central basis of Confucian moral philosophy. Our institution aims to cultivate humanity developed from the "five constant virtues" of humaneness, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faithfulness. The university lays stress on its education designed to develop abilities and to strengthen character. The university upholds Oyomei's (Wang Yang-ming's) doctrine of "the unity of knowledge and conduct": knowledge is not complete until it becomes conduct, and conduct is not complete unless it is knowledge itself at work. Therefore, our university aims to instill into the mind of the student the importance of promoting the practical utilization of knowledge and of cultivating rich human nature in the spirit of Confucianism.
