  1. Hsinchu American School was established to meet the educational needs of international students, enabling them to be successful in a post-secondary English-based program. Located in scenic Hsinchu, the Silicon Valley of Taiwan, one of the leading knowledge-based economies of Asia, our school has emerged as the only fully licensed international school to grade 12 in the area, due to the concerns from the professional community for an international school that can meet as well as exceeds the expectations of the global community represented here. Hsinchu American School is a co-educational and college-preparatory international school licensed by the Taiwan Ministry of Education and by Hsinchu Education Bureau serving grades 1 through 12. It is registered with the American Institute in Taiwan and is in the process of accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Nestled in the National Art Park, the school is surrounded by a scenic 21,500 sq. meter (6,500 pings) campus with newly renovated and state-of-the-art facilities for student achievement. Our classrooms are loaded with projector screens and wireless internet access. The spacious atrium in the middle of the building offers a safe environment for a diversity of indoor activities and celebrations. The sculpture park and the coming fine arts museum in the National Art Park provides an environment to nurture students’ appreciation of arts and promote their artistic creativity. With our outstanding faculty, Hsinchu American School offers students the opportunity for Advanced Placement with an AP preparatory program from the 6th Grade. The school curriculum is based on the U.S. national McRel Standards, designed for university-bound students in the United States. We are extremely excited about the 2019-2020 school year, as well as moving forward in the future. Not only is this our 15th year, but the school also continues to undergo steady improvement in the areas of instruction, extra-curricular activities, and facilities. We are certain this will be one of the best years in the history of the Hsinchu American School. We are currently in the 5th year of a six-year WASC accreditation period and are looking forward to our next full visit in the spring of 2021. Gaining full accreditation was an arduous process, but we are all proud of the outcome and how it has provided us a mechanism for continual school improvement. We will be sending our new vice-principal, Mrs. Heather Wilson, to the EARCOS Conference this fall to receive training to be our WASC representative on visiting teams. We are also excited here at HAS with the opening of lower elementary grades for the first time in the school’s history. We have hired several fully certified elementary homeroom teachers who will bring a great deal of excitement and energy to the design and creation of this program. The school is also currently constructing a dormitory that should be completed in the fall. This will allow students outside the greater Hsinchu area to attend our school and experience a great international educational program. Hsinchu American School is an innovative school focused on preparing students for the constantly changing climate of the 21st century. The school provides a university preparatory program, for international students, using an American-based curriculum. The school offers a rotating schedule of Advanced Placement courses and places a great deal of importance on math and science courses, allowing advanced students to enroll in higher-level courses based on ability, as a means of propelling them to greater academic heights. Hsinchu American School also strives to provide students with a strong foundation in the classic liberal arts, to enhance their abilities in the four C’s (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity), and to furnish students with multiple opportunities for experiential learning. HAS is intent upon helping its students become global citizens, critical thinking, and lifelong learners. The program’s focus is to create young adults who can draw upon a plethora of knowledge and skills necessary for life-long success in the modern world. Hsinchu American School’s Schoolwide Learner Goals – the LGs – have emerged from the vision and mission that were created as a foundation and framework for the school. These distinguishing skills and habits of mind and action not only support students in achieving academically but also in self-directed and continual learning, problem-solving, and adaptation. Since their original establishment in the fall of 2011, the LGs have been continuously reviewed, analyzed, and revised by all stakeholders in the school community. They have been most recently revised in the fall of 2013 after multiple sources of input culminating in a set of three areas for student development.
  2. Hsinchu County American School (HCAS) was established in 2016 to fulfill the vision of Dr. Johnson Korrnell Huang to challenge the current education system in Taiwan. In summary, he saw the need to produce students who will have a lasting impact on society - changing the world and saving lives. Dr. Huang also envisioned students who will stop, think (critically), and act (fearlessly). Dr. Huang believes that just as the purpose of a hospital is to save lives and to alleviate pain, the mission of a good school is to influence future generations and to create aspirations. By combining the Western educational principles with Chinese educational philosophies, students at HCAS will benefit by learning the best of both cultures while being oriented and setting their standards toward North America. Regardless of whether our students decide their futures in Taiwan or abroad, they will be equipped for success in our complex globalized society. There are many stakeholders at Hsinchu County American School (HCAS). These stakeholders include the Board of Trustees, parents, teachers, students, and members of the administration as well as the staff. Two of the important functions of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) are to streamline the communication between parents and our school and to give support to our school. PTA at HCAS was not created from an appointment from the school nor by the election from the parent body. Parents from all grades simply began to gather on a volunteer basis to share their concerns in an ad hoc manner until the body formed its organization and momentum. HCAS then naturally decided to formally recognize this gathering as the official PTA meeting. As described by Horace Mann, individuals organized in voluntary associations, just as our education should be taught by the spirit, methods, and discipline of a free society. Currently, parent representatives from all grades meet once a month at our school. At Hsinchu County American School (HCAS), student council members are elected every academic year to represent the student body and to serve as a channel for communication for administration and other stakeholders of the community. Student Council provides a unique opportunity to put forward the issues and policies that matter to students. As originally espoused by John Dewey, student council activities often engage students in learning about democracy and leadership. HCAS expects our student council members to voice their opinions and concerns politely and confidently to our parents, teachers, admins, and fellow student body. Therefore, we anticipate HCAS student council members to demonstrate a higher level of maturity in character and merit in academics. The goals and purposes of special councils and associations in the school are to build up our community in the spirit of collaboration and democracy. We anticipate constructive voices which will help move the school forward in a positive manner. Student council members should not trivialize democracy, but rather cherish it.
  3. HIS is a fully licensed, independent international school which has provided quality education for the children of foreign nationals living in the Hsinchu area since 1981. Our purpose-built campus is designed to provide the best educational environment and resources for our students, offering comprehensive and continuous education for students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. "Previous HIS graduates have gone on to achieve great success at such prestigious universities as Stanford, Caltech, Oxford, and St. Andrew’s. Recent graduates are enjoying life at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Art and Design, Hong Kong University, Penn State, NYU, UBC, and Juilliard." Our emphasis is on providing quality education in a warm, secure atmosphere of friendship and trust, and in fostering a genuine love of learning, an enquiring mind, and a well-rounded personality. Once a child’s innate curiosity has been aroused, the whole learning process begins our objective is to extend this process with mutual joy and enthusiasm, to actively involve our students in the world of thought. Our expectations for teachers and students are high. We set goals to be achieved through motivation, enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication. Academic excellence results from the combination of a well-coordinated, structured program, using well-researched, carefully selected materials implemented by experienced, motivated teachers who are excited about the whole process of educating and developing young minds. Creativity is stimulated both in the regular classes and through our arts program. Our students continue to achieve awards and recognition in the creative and performing arts. Along with academic and creative progress, we aim to develop such traditional values as integrity, honesty, self-reliance, adaptability, a sense of humor, and awareness of the needs of others in the local and wider world community. "Our campus was designed by a team of school architects and experienced educators to provide the best teaching and learning environment possible." Our classrooms are bright and stimulating, well-lit, and air-conditioned. Class sizes range from 10–20 students with an average student/teacher ratio of 14/1. Our teachers are well-qualified and experienced, coming from Canada, South Africa, Australia, the UK, and the US. Several have been at the school for more than five years. In the younger grade classes, qualified, experienced assistants, many of who have been at HIS for over fifteen years, work alongside the homeroom teachers. Our campus was designed by a team of school architects and experienced educators to provide the best teaching and learning environment possible. It embodies and reflects the vibrancy of our school community and the joy of learning together—which is the essence of HIS.
